Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

Fuck yeah 4-player.
Fuck yeah SMB2 cast.

People will find any reason to be upset, but that's the Nintendo snob mantra for you: If it's not "innovative" (whatever that means), then it must surely suck.
Mario is fundamentally a single-player experience. Nintendo is being 'innovative' in all the wrong ways lately.

I loved Mario 3D Land but this bothers me for 3 reasons:

1- Wii U is much more powerful than 3DS yet this game is not indicative of that

2- Where is the epic soundtrack like the Galaxy games?

3- Using backgrounds from NSMB

Go get some glasses or play 3D Land again.

This looks fantastic. If the Wii U price comes down $50, I will get one this year.

Developer directs look better but it's still hella disappointing.

Sure, I will probably buy it. I will probably have fun with it. It will probably be a great game.

But I feel it's not enough. This will be a great game. As a follow-up to Galaxies it's disappointing. It seems gone is the grandiose of the previous two games. Artstyle is safe to the point that it's boring. So far it seems to be the same as 3DL with more detail and in HD. I'm not even mentioning music because I still try to restrain that thought from my mind. From incredible soundtracks of SMG games we will be going to fine, catchy, but ultimately safe and sterile soundtrack.

Maybe it's because I think SM3DL is overloved (not really overrated, but rather maybe, hm, overhyped?) among Nintendo community and I thought it was, again, great, but not as extraordinary some people make it to be. And I absolutely hated the control scheme, that sure didn't help as this is vital part of 3D Mario experience.

This will be a good, great game. But SMGs were transcendent gaming experiences. It's just, well, not enough. Simple as that, THIS being the next EAD Tokyo headline 3D Mario is disappointing.

Game looks awesome !

Good to see multiplayer and AWESOME to see Peach !

And that's what I think every time I see brown/black/blue/orange game with a gun #749201.

Different strokes for different folks.

It's a little different here. After a >3 year gap since the last mainline Mario title, it's reasonable to think people would be expecting more than what looks like a sequel to what was thought to be a handheld series. I could understand if they didn't make a game as amazing as the Galaxy titles, but from this reveal it doesn't even look they they reached for that scope or creativity. Blurring the lines between what's a handheld game vs. what's a mainline 3D title in this series is not a good thing.

And just so it's clear, I'm obviously basing off what's been shown, I'm not judging the entire game, no I haven't played it, yes I realize it's not out until December.

Any word to online play?

A big no confirmed by IGN.

Which is a disgrace in my opinion. When they coined the idea of a multiplayer 3D Mario, did they really only think about the handful of people that can play 4 player local multiplayer regularly?

Why no online?

I'm so happy they're sticking with this style of gameplay. 3D Land is really a much better game than the Galaxies, the only thing it was lacking was content and too many reused levels, but hopefully this will remedy that, and the Multiplayer looks pretty crazy

Just watch the Dev Video: It actually looks awesome:

Oh and watch them on Youtube - the quality is higher than on Nintendos own site..

I really hope people give this game a chance. I was a bit disappointed with it not being a Galaxy-like undertaking as well. But I must say, upon rewatching it multiple times, design-wise it looks like it's bringing all the best bits of the recent 3D Mario games and evolving them with elements from SMW and SM2 that they never seemed to touch upon. I love the fact that there are multiple playable characters not just exclusive to Multiplayer, that they all control differently and that the levels actually look massive.

Lukewarm reactions aside, I feel that this will be an absolutely stellar game.

And this is just such a small detail to me but I love how you're given free camera control unlike SM3DL. It kind of adds to the sense of scale.

Oh come on!

Game looks good, but definitely not the Galaxy 2 successor I hoped for.

SMB2-based characters? Finally! NSMBU was crying out for this.

Cat suit? Lol, okay.

I think this looks like a lot of fun, definitely down for it.

??? :(

i was so hyped watching the live demo on ign too...

Wow, saw just the trailer in higher resolution and hearing the music for the first time.
The music is fucking garbage of the highest caliber.
No fucking ambition whatsover.

And I liked 3D land :(

The only good thing out of this is the finally SMB2 multiplayer. The rest is mediocre at best, of course it looks much better than 3D land, but the graphics are VERY dissapointing. Mario Kart 8 looks amazing, this on the other hand, Nintendo has a big internal problem with their teams.

Exactly this.

I'm surprised at the negativity. The game looks great. I, too, was expecting something more unique, but this looks like pure distilled Mario awesome. Finally bringing back multiple unique playable characters for the first time since Super Mario 64 is great. My only real disappointment is that it most likely won't have online multiplayer cuz Nintendo.

I think watching the developer video should be a requirement before making posts like this. I thought it was a "3DS game" when watching the garbage stream too, but watching this it's very clear that none of what you said applies above, outside the soundtrack (which we have not heard a thing about yet):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JooUqPF2Lf4&list=PL2JiZAV5BmDXIoXMyc63l2Yn2saUA4SB8&index=4

I watched that and my points still stand. This does not look like a game that is on hardware that is significantly more powerful than 3DS. It doesn't look bad, but it is in no way showcasing the power of Wii U. The music in the levels was pretty generic (this could change- but I kept thinking this for NSMB U and that didn't happen). After the incredibly epic soundtrack from the Galaxy games, this can be seen as nothing other than a regression and disappointment. And the trailer showed a couple backgrounds from the NSMB series (winter and desert themes).

And based on what I'm seeing, 3D World looks like an advancement on 3D Land - and the latter was a LOT of fun (in fact I'm still fighting with it to get some of those last stages done), so the idea of that on a larger scale excited me.

I don't know, I just feel some of the reactions here are a little much.

A lot of people are saying this game will be good but is not exciting and is disappointing, coming from the minds of the Galaxy games.

They had a chance to blow us away with a console Mario game and instead it's more of the same. Good same, as SM3DL was a great game, but it's all following this narrative that Nintendo has had lately. A company that was known for their wild imaginations is now a company of sequels and safety.

I was initially disappointed, but the developer Direct restored my confidence. 3D Land was a fantastic game, and this is expanding on it in many ways.

Really excited for this, love that there is co-op and multiple characters ala Super Mario Bros 2.

Also the cat powerup looks hilarious, laughed when I heard Mario meow.

When I first saw it I thought it was the sequel to 3D Land for the 3DS. It's incredibly disappointing that this is the flagship 3D Mario game for the Wii U. It's so obvious Nintendo needed a new Mario game for 2013 and they knew they could reuse the 3D Land idea and assets to make a game far quicker (and cheaper) than making a true 3D mario game with exploration as the emphasis.

I can just tell the tone for this game is all wrong. In Mario 64 the game could fluctuate from inspiring awe and wonder as you looked to distant rooms or floating objects and wondered how to get there, to the subtle hint of danger in the Hazy Maze Cave, to the moody calmness of Dire Dire Docks.

Super Mario 3D World just has that terrible generic "happy, happy, bounce, bounce" blandness of the New Super Mario Bros. series. It's a serviceable game aiming for a base hit, but not a swing for the fences.

Watch the trailer again and you will see a shit ton of stuff you wouldn't see in Super Mario 3D Land. They are giving the 3D Land style of gameplay another chance and a larger focus with levels that have a Galaxy like scope.

Are they just getting all their developers into a room with a hat full of decades old Miyamoto ideas to figure out what game they're going to work on next?

Why can't we get the same fresh ideas that Nintendo used to spawn these franchises to begin with 25 years ago to create something new today?

Call me mad but i am about to make a bold statement. If you watch some qualitiy footage of todays games and not the actuall stream (goddamit Nintendo - how is it even possible to fuck that up?) you can see significant advantages over the current gen in every single game presented.

except smash

I have and I've watched all three levels that were linked above. It just looks boring, like Nintendo doesn't care.

....

I can't. Nintendo still doesn't get it.

This just went from a day 0 purchase/pressure bros to buy, to a someday/maybe/eh.

No thanks.

Well, I will also add that the cat suit looks great.
But man oh man, I think only hearing the shitty music in the games makes me mad.

Its like nintendo doesnt hear sometimes, and its usually in the worst case when they dont try to hear the fans. I love they go their own way, but sometimes you need to sit and hear, this was one of those times.
Lol at no fucking online, you have to be kidding me.

This would have been an awesome 3DS game. I'm disappointed this is the new amazing console offering that have been so consistently brilliant since Mario 64. Having said that, I will buy it, I will play it multiplayer and I'm sure it will be fun. but it has nothing on Mario 64/Galaxy and it's such a shame.

What are people disappointed about?

The isometric camera, the small scope of the levels, the musics, the general look, the new power-up, graphics, and lack of innovation. These things disappointed me, but I am still very much looking forward to this. I LOVED 3D Land. I was just hoping for something a little different

I just want to say this game looks PERFECT to me. Absolutely, utterly divine.

3D Land is my favorite of the 3D Mario games, and this is like that on steroids, with the playable characters from SMB2/Doki Doki Panic and MOTHERFUCKING CHARGING CHUCK. Seriously, the game looks amazing. You have the sprawling yet focused playscapes that remind me of the densely interactive 1-1 in SM3DL. You have the cat power-up, with the wall-climbing and mid-air attacks and dashing slide. You have tons of invisible secrets you expose with the GamePad, and a camera you can control with the GamePad. Support for up to four players. Gorgeous graphics. Great new melody. Lots of new enemies like the mice and the ant-men.

It just looks HEAVENLY.

New Super Mario Bros Wii sold WELL more than Galaxy 1 and 2 combined. That's the answer as to why they keep pumping out games in the "New" series and apparently now the "3D" series (not that 3D Land was terrible or anything though), and not doing anything against that mold like they did with Galaxy.

I remember when a new Mario game was the once per generation marvel that set a new standard. Not even Capcom would be able to shit out Mario games this fast. I remember when I was younger I always wished Nintendo would speed up Mario releases, but yearly (or more) updates to the series may be helping Nintendo in the short-term, it's doing nothing but damaging them in the long-run.

I would also like to add that the music in recent Mario games is abysmal I wish nothing but horrible things on whoever decided to keep regurgitating the "New" theme in all the recent Mario games. Galaxy was such a masterpiece in that regard (along with pretty much every other aspect).

Really????? I just assumed it would. That's insane!

This game will be god like. Too stronk.

But I'll be disappointed that there is no online multiplayer most likely. Thankfully I have a few buddies I can play with locally, but I know there are plenty where there buddies are out of town or whatever and would like to get a game going but can't due to no network play. This game, even if it makes for a delay or two, really should have network play.

Other than that, looks just as good as 3D Land. Pumped!

So I showed my girlfriend this trailer. The first thing she said was "I love it! This is cooler than Galaxy!"

Maybe Nintendo know what their doing?

You see, i see it completely opposite. This looks like pure fun, imo.

Not everyone gets it. Different tastes.
I suppose I just have an issue with Nintendo lately.

Sequel to SM3DL. Sequel to DKR. Sequel to Smash Brothers. Sequel to Pikmin. Sequel to Link to the Past. Sequel to Mario Kart. Remake of Wind Waker.

Where is the creativity? New takes on old games? While I did not like Kid Icarus, I completely respect it. None of these games earn this kind of respect. They may be great games, and I don't doubt they are, but Nintendo is just riding nostalgia and its bugging me.

I like that there's now multiplayer in the 3D Mario. I just hope they still deliver a challenging experience. World 6-3 looks like it could be just that.

Did you similarly complain about the sequel to Super Mario Galaxy (which was a far more safe move than this game)?
