Who's to say the three new comers we saw arn't unlockables?
In all the other games Luigi appears in like Mario Golf or Mario Party they made a special mention that he's in it just because. Just surprised they didn't have him throwing Mario off the stage and claiming it's "Luigi Time!"
Odd that the Spirit Tracks stage seems to be spruced up the train (textures arn't a horrible DS pixelated mess) but the Link model is still low poly.

I hope Tom Nook is in as an alternate costume at least. Ahh I can't believe the "Villager"beat him out. Still, huge AC fan, he is one of my favorite characters to date.

The only unlockables they've ever revealed before a Smash Bros game launch were Snake and Sonic. Luigi wasn't revealed in both Melee and Brawl until after the game was out and people got him.
Revealing unlockables before release kind of hurts the point of making them unlockable. So, Megaman might be an unlockable, because he's a guest and they want to advertise him, but also want to make him feel special in the game itself, but I don't think the other revealed characters will be.

Since they're retooling some characters to their latest appearance (Pit having some Uprising moves, for example), I'd hope that they would do the same for Samus's throws.

I play dumbshit weird dudes. Its what I do.
I main Ganondorf, play Ness as backup, often Run DeeDede, and I play Rob a lot too. Villager was just stupid enough that I was considering him, but this moment when I saw it on the video clenched him as someone I would make an effort to play.

The villager and trainer both look too damn awesome. I'm really glad the series is returning to its more playful roots. Brawl took itself much too seriously. As long a they make sure that the characters are still balanced I'm be there day one for 3DS and Wii U version.
There's a male Wii Fit trainer in Wii Fit, so I suspect there's an alternate costume for that one, too.

We're seeing a theme of characters coming over from their own game worlds.
For The Villager there's an AC poster featuring smash characters, same with the Trainer and Wii Fit.
Maybe this game will see a more purposeful dive into the worlds of the various characters. We might be in store for mini games inspired by specific game series. Or maybe the story mode is less a combined/weird single world like in Brawl and more an adventure through these separate worlds.
Food for thought.

As a Nintendo fan, everything about this game makes me excited. I have no idea how people can complain about the graphics of either version. Having the characters stand out properly is incredibly important, and not only do the characters pop, but both versions also look beautiful. Wii Fit Trainer is amazing and Mega Man was the moment of the NDirect for me. I finally got my Villager like I had expected to be in Brawl too.
As someone interested in competitive play, the jury is still out. Brawl airdodges, a few noticed instances of ledge snapping, some of the new moves seem ridiculously good.

Love everything I've seen about this game so far. The only thing that's really bugging me is fox.

I was hoping for new moves from Samus too. She has so many iconic powerups in her games, yet in the Smash Bros series she's always been limited to a very basic set. Give us the speed boost or scan visor at least.

I see him as an alt costume or clone for the Villager if they wanna pad the roster. It breaks my heart too because I'd love if they could come up with an entirely original moveset that does him justice. Also, is anyone else miffed by the lack of Resetti? He'd be perfect! Going hard on those resetters with a pickaxe or something...
