Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

why does 3D Mario need to be free roam? the series has always excelled with its focused and tight level design.

people liked that aspect about Mario 64 and Sunshine and in recent years all the Mario games had more or less linear level progression. It would be nice to go back to explorable 3D words, for a change

the problem with this game is there seems to be a lot of empty space because of 4P multiplayer. i hope that won't be the case for the rest of it, but it seems to be the "thing" for this game...

It doesn't NEED to be free roam, but people loved Mario 64 (and Sunshine, even with it's flaws) and it would be amazing to see a true successor to that type of 3D Mario game.
It's a very different kind of game, but in my opinion it is no less valid that the "focused" level design of other Mario's.

Personally I wanted the 3D Land style to stay on 3DS since it is such a great fit for handhelds (and the Stereoscopic 3D can make for some really cool camera angle tricks). I have zero interest in multiplayer games (especially with no online) so this just looks ehh to me.

Both Galaxy games were not free roam and both are universally regarded as some of the best games ever created

Maybe free roam wasn't the best word. SMG had you going all over the map to get your star. you had to swim all over the place, go back and forth, do objectives for some NPC's etc. but 3d Land and World has you going from point A to B all the time.

Oh hey guys... wanst' this the title that was UNPLAYABLE without the 3D from 3DS?

Amir0x redeemed?

BTW: meh. Another Mario game.

I have a question for everyone:

If they had released this trailer, but instead of showing off 4-players, they just showed single-player but revealed the multiple characters, and the music was similar in epicness to Galaxy's instead of 3D Land's, would there be as much bitching?

I admit, the way they've revealed this game is a HUGE let down. I -LOVE- 3D Land, and I'm positive this game is going to be incredible, but the backlash over the reveal is warranted because it's just such a boring shitty reveal.

They should have set the trailer to some much better music and showed a pro player running through vast complex worlds, intercut with clips of the different characters using their special abilities to reach different paths, instead of derpy bullshit music with 4 people bumbling around into each other.
Later in the trailer they could have revealed that multiple people can play at the same time, but the actual announcement of the first 3D Mario title for the Wii U should have just shown off the single player first and foremost so that people won't think it's just NSMB in 3D.

Heh, I knew GAF would hate this game as soon as the first image showed up. Me, it looks pretty good, though I didn't like SM3DL thaaat much, mainly because the movement felt weird with incremental acceleration. Also Tanooki made things too easy... I should do a no-Tanooki suit run some day.

I keep on wondering why they can't put 4 different controlling characters in NSMB now. The excuse was because of multiplayer, but this has it too, so?

Also, it was probably impossible for Nintendo to get a "proper" 3D Mario game out by Christmas.

I think this was/is a rush job. The models and the artsyle look very simple. Nintendo realised they had to get the game out soon to save the Wii U. So they took the safest route by reusing the themes and art style from the 3DS release.

This is the new art style. That's been established for about four games now.

Plus, reuse of assets happens all the time.

This game will probably be really fun... But where's the creativity? Multiplayer is cool, but it was almost expected. I want this game to do well, because I have such a fondness for Nintendo. But on the other hand, I want to see some insane reinvention of the 3D Mario series--fresh changes to the game's fundamentals. I feel like the Big-N may never capture that jump from 2D to 3D in Mario 64 or the mind-boggling puzzle-scapes of Galaxy.

And it has 4 player co-op. In 2013

I can maybe accept the "precision" excuse for NSMBU as lag would kill that game, but there's no reason not to have it in this one.
As long as there's collision between players (and it seems that way from what little I've watched), lag would probably kill this game online. Can't imagine it being anything other than a janky mess.

Honestly, online play is something I've become completely disillusioned with in general over the course of this generation. It's primarily because most of the games I play (fighters) just play like shit online anyway, but I'm not going to miss it in Mario one bit either.

I need to watch some of the hands-on footage. I'm hoping they got rid of NSMBW's intermittent pauses whenever one player takes damage in multiplayer. That's really the only thing I hate about multi in those games so if they've fixed that I'll be pretty hyped about this.

Maybe free roam wasn't the best word. SMG had you going all over the map to get your star. you had to swim, go back and forth, etc. but 3d Land and World has you going from point A to B all the time.

In some levels, yes. I would say a lot of the levels were point A->B starting with the first Galaxy, but increasingly so in the sequel. You just moved from multiple mini planets so it may have seemed larger in scale.

The more I watch it, the more I'm hyped towards playing it. At the very least, the levels look more complicated than the ones we saw in 3D Land. Hopefully the levels can take advantage of the fact that they have four distinct characters running around.

And yeah, I'm totally going for Toad since I have to play Mario games running at full speed. In Mario 2, Toad was all I played.

people liked that aspect about Mario 64 and Sunshine and in recent years all the Mario games had more or less linear level progression. It would be nice to go back to explorable 3D words, for a change

Definitely. That is what I was hoping for this time. I loved Galaxy, but Mario 64 is still a true classic in its own right to me.

This game seems to be even more linear in style than Galaxy. It will be more like playing 2D mario, which could be really cool, but is not what I wanted this time.

Since I enjoyed SM3DL a lot, I'm really looking forward to this. Getting to play as floaty Peach again is a nice throwback too. I may have to get a Wii U after all, once this and MK8 are out.

The cat power-up is a little odd though and when I heard Iwata say "cat mario", my first thought was that one freeware platformer. It doesn't seem to be as unbalanced as the Tanooki suit at first glance.

So I can finally post now that GAF is up.

My thoughts, absolutely horrible.

Now I loved 3D Land and think it was a brillant fit on the 3DS. Its only behind the GALAXY games in my books. That's why this is so dumb. The game was cut down a lot because it was portable. The linear levels and times worked for pick up and play. Even worse is probably how jumping was more limited because of the smaller levels. Why go back? It barely looks any better. How does Mario Kart possibly look better.

This and Mario Kart 8 are clearly Nintendo looking at the 3DS games' success and wanting that money. The 4 -player co-op takes away from the wide-openess of past games.

This game would have been welcomed if it came after a true 3D Mario. Instead it feels repetitive to have another 4-player co-op game only a year after NSMB U. With Luigi U its like Nintendo doesn't realize you can't flood the market so quickly with similar games. They won't increase sales instead they will eat into each other.
I thought there was no one way to be disappointed with a new Mario. But Nintendo found one. The saddest thing is this means the soonest to get a real 3D Mario is probably 2016. You had one job Nintendo, one job.

If they had released this trailer, but instead of showing off 4-players, they just showed single-player but revealed the multiple characters, and the music was similar in epicness to Galaxy's instead of 3D Land's, would there be as much bitching?

I think just having music that wasn't terrible and some more clearly-themed worlds would have gone a long way in making the reveal (and the game) better. I thought the same thing about the 3D Land too.

After seeing it three times I think the camera angle might be subtly skewing a lot of peoples impressions, because the actual levels we've seen look like they take quite a bit from the Galaxy and even 64 playbook. But the pulled back camera makes it feel like more of a 2D game

This might be the biggest form of what I describe as the Zelda effect. Good to great games that are underrated because of their lineage. A lineage that usually consists of revolutionary games that define generations where decent games like sunshine and this will not be as appreciated. Also see the 3ds version of this game. A really good game.

I fell for it. I wanted something grander. And I'm ashamed.

It's a very different kind of game, but in my opinion it is no less valid that the "focused" level design of other Mario's.
Mario 64's exploration-focused design made more sense in a day when that was novel and impressive on a technical level in and of itself. As far as I'm concerned, that day has passed.

Why would I want to waste my time looking for platforms when I could be platforming instead?

As much as I wanted a big, single-player Mario game, I can't deny this game looks delightful and like a lot of fun. Something I can play with friends.

It's a different direction. I think Nintendo is clearly catering to the casual/multiplayer crowd with this one, rather than the core gamer like previous Marios.

I just hope it has a lot more level variety than 3D Land and NSMB.

For starters, didnt 3d land sell better than all of the other 3d games?
So in times where they need profit and a 3d mario...

In Japan it did.

I liked 3D land better than Galaxy so I'm happy with this. Something new for Mario would have been better than either though.

I cant believe this is how they want players introduced to 3D Mario on Wii U. Everything about it screams middling effort compared to what they did with Galaxy, visually, audio, just a disappointment. It doesn't help that I wasn't a big fan of Mario 3D Land to begin with, so now I have to hope it really comes into its own here :(

Im just glad they have fully original bosses now ( I really cant take Bowser Jr or koopa kids again), returned to Dino Island, and a bunch of World enemies/original new enemies. Not to mention it looks challenging.

The art style...while not mind blowing, does look pretty sharp and detailed.

Remember that giddy feeling you got when you first saw Mario 64? Or Galaxy?

Anyone feeling that now?

No?

Yes actually it looks different from those 2. It has the tight design of the 2d Mario games like smb3 but brought to 3d. It's closer to the 2d games than sm64 and galaxy which I love.

I mean, from a gameplay perspective I definitely think the 3DLand mold is in and of itself innovative for the Mario series, so I'm not sure where the "rehash" comments are coming from unless the first sequel to a game already puts things in rehash territory. I understand that some people wanted something big and free-roaming again, but I'm still in the camp that says that focused Mario is best Mario

Came for Mario Universe and left disappointed. This looking so similar to 3D Land makes me feel like they needed to make a Mario game fast and didn't want to build it from scratch so they took 3D Land's engine and made it bigger.

This isn't lazy, it's just Not Mario Galaxy.

So on the one hand, I'm disappointed, but on the other hand, in EAD Tokyo we trust. The only problem with 3D Land was a lack of scale. And it was a portable game.

Dude I'm so dissapointed with this, I really was expecting a SM64-2, hell I would even take another kinda boring Galaxy game, this just looks offensive to me, multiplayer bland looking pos.

this exactly for me. i'll still buy it and im sure its great, but this game probably should come after the game that blows your dick off with great graphics, open world etc. urgh,

Why would I want to waste my time looking for platforms when I could be platforming instead?

Because it's fun to just explore the little worlds the game is filled with? The day hasn't passed for those kinds of games, Nintendo has just decided to throw them away for games that are more immediately pleasurable for players so they can sell more copies of their games.

How can you even have fun with the platforming in modern Mario games when it's so braindead easy? It took an entire playthrough of 3D Land before levels with even a HINT of challenge started coming.

I get more out of a game where I can jump around and make my own fun in an open, creative environment than the guided amusement park rides Nintendo is making these days:
"And if you look to your right you'll see nostalgic reference #132" Oooh, Ahhhh.
"And if you look to your left you'll find a powerup that removes any need to actually platform or control your character with any skill to win" Oooh, ahhhh. *snaps photo*

Played every level of the demo at e3 and got all green stars in each.

It plays amazing and smooth. Looks grat too. You guys are nuts.

Also - MK8 at 60 FPS looks phenomenal. No joke - who would have thought MK would be the graphical powerhouse.

Yes actually it looks different from those 2. It has the tight design of the 2d Mario games like smb3 but brought to 3d. It's closer to the 2d games than sm64 and galaxy which I love.

Sorry, the design here looks nothing like SMB3 to me. A lot of Galaxy (especially 2) took place on small relatively linear levels that I would say is tighter than what we've seen of this game. Of course it's hard to tell from only seeing a few minutes of the game.

While I'm definitely excited for this game, I can't help but feel slightly disappointed [as many of you do].

Traditionally, the "first" Mario title on that particular console offered new innovation, or at least, was something more-or-less new, different than what you were used to.

NES had Super Mario Bros.
SNES had Super Mario World
N64 had Super Mario 64
GCN had Super Mario Sunshine
Wii had Mario Galaxy
Wii U had...New Super Mario Bros. U and now Super Mario 3D World

Don't get me wrong, I loved New Super Mario Bros. U. Fantastic level design, and it was a lot of fun to play through. But it wasn't nearly as ambitious as previous first Mario titles in each respective system. It seems to me that either Nintendo is playing it safe, or they're just not ready to show that super-incredible, open-world Mario title for the Wii U just yet.

Either way, I will be pre-ordering/purchasing Super Mario 3D World at launch. I know I'll have a great time with it, but part of me can't help but imagine "What if...?".

just watched the gameplay videos

looks gorgeous. It lacks that WOW factor a new Galaxy game could have given, but I can't see myself complaining about this: it's got the usual charm, ideas, platforming goodness and polish

yes I'm aboard. Give me 96 levels and tons of secrets Nintendo

with the talk of speed running with Toad in the developer video, Nintendo HAS to put in leaderboards right?
nintendo?

Finally had a chance to watch this trailer. Gotta say...not what I was hoping for out of next-gen Mario. Maybe I was expecting too much, but I was really hoping for a follow-up to Galaxy and SM64. Didn't really enjoy SM3DL all that much and especially don't like that style of music.

C'mon, Nintendo. Bring back the full orchestra!

So, I told myself I'd wait until the new 3D Mario game was shown before making a decision as to whether or not I'd get a Wii U this year or possibly even ever. I'm relieved to have that out of the way now.

I see Chargin' Chuck so it's all good to me.

I also have no doubt that Nintendo will be working on a more Galaxy-esque game after this one.

Imagine if they made a Super Mario 64-2, where you had to go back to the mushroom kingdom after something terrible happened, (getting overrun by something) and you had to revist all the past levels from the first one but everything has changed in those worlds (again being overrun by someone or something) Think the same vein as Link to the Past II but on a more epic scale....More undiscovered rooms, more stars, and they could have had multiplayer in it too.

That would have been the Megaton. :(
