Because they are part of the same meta series.

I don't know about that. Since it's never been clear if Nojima's original FNC mytho contains such conflict (One nation invades another for crystal).

edit: XIII, Type-0 and XV are all based on the mytho, but they are not related at all. Just like FF I, II and III (all based on warriors of light mytho)

I've been trying to analyze the trailer to try to understand the story.

Noctis's kingdom has the last crystal.
Remaining kingdoms want the crystal.
They're going to somehow retrieve the crystal by killing Noctis.
There is some drama between Noctis and his father.
Stella is a from a neighboring kingdom who is also being attacked?

Assuming the girl from the beginning is Stella, was that adult Stella or was that child stella? My initial thought was that it was a child but I'm not sure. Having kid Noctis and kid Stella know each other wouldn't make sense if they meet for the first time at the party.

It's a shame the only thing we got from Nomura about Noctis was "yeah, he looks cool, you might think he's cool, but he's not at all".

My big fear is remembering the initial Final Fantasy XIII trailer and seeing Lightning doing all these crazy attacks with a system that never made it into the final game. Please delivery FFXV.
That was a target render. This is real gameplay from a game that's been years in development, not any kind of concept or target render (it will actually quite likely get BETTER looking than this trailer).

Much prefer Gladiolus' old design.

Not quite sure how it works but the sword-switching mechanic seems like it could be really cool. Stringing together combos while switching between weapons is a great idea, and of course being able to have like 5 or 6 sword equip slots is enough to excite any RPG fan. It's looking like the combat is very action-heavy, I'm really hoping that's true.

lol I wish they added the ! sound and symbol for Behemoth.

Since they have finally announced it, I'm hoping for new info at least every few months until it releases (similar to what they have done with the XIII series). And release window would be fantastic. It will decide when I get a PS4.

Exactly. I have high hopes considering they were confident enough to show another gameplay video. I also expect some consistent news for a bit from Famitsu for the next few weeks. Q4 2014 is looking likely.

I feel like apart from Noctis all the new character designs look significantly less anime influence, which I think will help it in the West. Except maybe Prompto.

Such a shame Ignis wasn't in the trailer much, I always loved that part where he's like "i'm going to think of something to return it hundredfold"

The faces look more human, but I'm worried they might be too Asian for western audiences now.

It was them as children. He's probably forgotten her by the party, but she remembers him.

here is the story part of the official press release.

rough:

the kingdom ルシス has the last crystal of the world. The kingdom has been in a state of cold war with the military country ニフルハイム.

A peace mediation was carried out in order to put an end to it. however, such happiness was broken due to the sudden invasion of ニフルハイム army. They annihilated the magic shield of ルシス, where the use of weaponry was prohibited.

Noctis, the heir to the ルシス throne who has been used to a peaceful life, was suddenly in the middle of war, along with his friends.

It's a shame the only thing we got from Nomura about Noctis was "yeah, he looks cool, you might think he's cool, but he's not at all".
I wonder if this is just a casual statement, meaning he's like Squall in that regard or if it's deeper and Noctis et al are the villains in this story, the tragic heroes and we're playing it from that point of view.

So let me get this straight.

This an action game in the final fantasy universe? No collecting potions, magic, numbers on enemies heads when you hit them?

As in most of the time you are playing the game you are playing rather than being in some menu?

edit: Watched the trailer. Not bad. I can live with the numbers long as the game is mainly kicking ass, not messing with options or loot.

This may be my very first final fantasy game.

There's already magic and numbers on enemies' heads when you hit them in this video...

I would imagine that you would still get drops from monsters....

I don't know about that. Since it's never been clear if Nojima's original FNC mytho contains such conflict (One nation invades another for crystal). I would say most unlikely since FF13 didn't have such plot.
Each game using the Fabula Nova Crystallis mythology is its own interpretation of the base mythology. The base mythology handles stuff like l'cie & role of crystals as these powerful entities, but how and where the games use these elements is up to each game's story's writer.

They don't have to kill to Noctis to retrieve the crystal, but Noctis IS the protector of it so. Otherwise you are pretty much correct. Noctis' kingdom actually gets attacked when they are signing a peace treaty with one of the countries that has been at war with his. And IIRC there's some mafia/yakuza kind of thing going on as well.

I don't think western audience has a thing with REALISTIC asian faces. Anime style maynot be appealing but a gripe with realistic asian faces would imply racism.

Ashe was made more Asian because they were worried a more French-influenced face would alienate the Japanese players. It's about getting the audience to relate to the characters.

Nomura talked about this a long time ago as well. It's more his personality, he's supposed to be less like Squall or Cloud than you would initially think. He's just a normal guy who loves his friends who isn't overly cool or stoic, but is kinda shy and has his insecurities like any other person.

That's more like Japan well documented racial insensitive. (Or at least what Square believed in that situation)

Did you even watch the trailer or pay any attention?

There's HP so you'd figure that there would be healing items/spells

Noctis casts a massive fire-spell.

You can see how much damage Noctis does to enemies with each and every hit (it can be hard to notice with the bigger enemies since the numbers don't appear where your attention might be).

It's an ACTION RPG, so yeah, more action-y than traditional FFs, but it still retains (J)RPG elements.

And "poor hit detection", lol. We have Noctis punching people into the ground. Of course a big enemy like a Behemoth would not have too much of a reaction to a puny humans sword slashes. The hit detection does need some liberties with those kinds of enemies.

He's attacking the humans and they're not really reacting so the shoddy hit detections are there whether you deny it or not.

Gameplay looks boring to me and that's the biggest negative. It may be a good collection of set pieces but that doesn't it make a good game.

Offsite, it seems this game is reminding people of their favorite FF's for some reason.

Some say it looks like VII, some say it looks like IX, some say it looks like XII...

I guess they nailed it art wise, a little something for everyone.

If you pay attention to the building when the Iron giants are attacking there is a tapestry with Niflheim and Lucis written on it with some numbers, presumably a date (election?). Keeps up with the political strife that seems to be taking place.

I'm a westerner that doesn't care for it but it has nothing to do with racism. It's an RPG, you are projecting yourself into that character and it's obviously easier to do that when the character is similar to yourself. That said, it does absolutely nothing to my interest and hype for the game and any gamer that's been playing a while has controlled all manner of characters so I can't imagine it being too much of an issue for many. Hopefully. I remember the first time I played FFX and Tidus looked Caucasian until I saw the first cut scene haha What a surprise.

Its fascinating.Yes.The culmination of FF art. Wonder how many artists are involved in this and who is chief art director.

I was 15 years old when I first saw the trailer for Versus XIII.

I'm 22 years old now and the game is still being worked on lol. I'm glad though, game looks really cool.

This may be my very first final fantasy game.

It's still an RPG, so That stuff is a given.

I dont mind drops, long as its simple recovery items. I dont want to be spending my time messing with loot and that kind of crap.

basically I want it to be closer to traditonal action game than a final fantasy. I understand people love it, but for me it is by far the most boring series in gaming, followed closely by metal gear solid.

ah. Oh well. hype crushed.

Is basically a kingdom hearts with a AAA budget and darker and edgier story.

Is not DMC/Ninja Gaiden.

Well I can say this is the first time I've been excited for a new SE game in many, many years. I got a lot of FF7 vibes from this.

Will buy.

Yes they are, the enemies clearly react to Noctis' attacks, no matter how blind you are or are not. This is not poor hit detection:

The enemies are flying around and falling down when Noctis attacks them. This is a fast-paced action RPG so not every should sent enemies backwards by miles, but they still clearly react to Noctis' attacks. Hell, they even react to Noctis jumping over them while dodging.

Gameplay looks boring to me and that's the biggest negative. It may be a good collection of set pieces but that doesn't it make a good game.
I can't understand how anyone can think this looks boring, what's with Noctis flying all over the place switching weapons on the fly, casting huge fireballs, being attacked by huge monsters and all. It genuinely looks like an exciting game. If you're not a fan of action RPGs, then too bad for you, but that doesn't make it a boring or a bad game, maybe go play Devil May Cry instead of bitching in this thread. As far as action RPGs of any kind go (whether western or Japanese), this looks like a top tier one in every way. The Witcher's combat only HOPES to be this fun looking (and playing, most probably, given SQEX recent track record with action RPGs).

FFXV HOOK:

Noctis and Stella are the children of two rival kingdoms, (?) and Niflheim. They meet each other as children but they do not know each other's true identities. One day, Stella's father finds out about Noctis and chases him away from Stella.

Fast forward to the future when the game takes place. Stella is sent to spy on Noctis' kingdom. They encounter each other in a party. Unfortunately, Noctis doesn't remember her.

Soon after, the party is crashed by GIANT MOTHER FUCKING PLANES. Niflheim's army comes roaming in and starts to attack the entire city. City is in chaos.

Noctis and his friends conclude that it's all about the damn crystal after realizing Niflheim is declaring war on many other cities. They realize that Noctis' dad is in trouble. They go out to save his ass.

Unfortunately, Noctis' father dies. Noctis goes emo mode and sits on the thrown. Ignis tells him he'll think of a plan and return it 100fold.

Also judging from some of the trailers, Noctis is pretty brash. He either begins to realize his powers or he's never used them before and he starts to notice how powerful he can be.

Amazing attention to detail in interiors.I hope this house if fully explorable at some point.Sorry if image quality is mediocre (just took them with paint)

Seeing Roberto Ferrari credited for character designs was interesting. Anyone know who he is?

I wonder what designs he's responsible for versus Nomura.
