Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

I'm really worried here, if this is the first half of 2014 it will be amazing (besides maybe FE thats not coming till later), but I've been through a Nintendo console many times before. If this is the whole year lineup and Nintendo is about to have one of their typical launch all the big franchises and then have a huge drought for almost a year it will be pretty bad.

Uh, yeah, I'm pretty sure that'll be most of the year. The average is one game per month, minus January and maybe February. Maybe 2-3 surprises?

I love Mario 3d land.

I love Mario world.

I'll buy this and love I.

but fuck is it the laziest shit Nintendo has ever pulled.

Having watched the trailer, the Developer Roundtable and some on-site gameplay I don't think I understand why people are mad (unless you hate Super Mario 3D Land in which case I can understand the potential trepidation). I'm almost certain people would have been sayin' "Nintendo ran out of ideas" if they showed off something akin to Mario Galaxy 3.

Looks good, runs good and I'm seeing alot of potential for tons of fun gameplay. No online co-op is BULLSHIT though and I'm a bit worried all the attention to multiplayer may hurt the single player experience. Otherwise this looks great. I feel this is much less a case of the product being bad and more some imaginary expectations not being met and backlash towards that.

Honestly I was mad until I saw it in1080p on my Wii U at 60fps...it's literally a night and day difference that not everyone can truly appreciate by Nintendo's shoddy U Stream and YouTube videos.

Most disappointing thing from the ND. I didn't think it was possible for 3D Mario to disappoint, but Nintendo proved me wrong :-(

I should wait before judging it, but... a WiiU sequel to Mario 3D Land? Really?

I mean, that game was really fun, but it was no Galaxy. It was designed specifically for the 3DS. The bite-sized levels, no hub-world, 3D puzzles. It worked on it's platform. But to bring the handheld experience to a full console game? Let alone a 3D Mario game, their flagship title? The follow up to games like Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario 64 or heck, even Super Mario Sunshine?

Also, while 3D Land looked nice, it's art style was pretty generic for the most part. I wanted WiiU Mario to look fresh, new and really show what the WiiU is capable of. But from what I've seen, it's just the 3D Land art style in HD. Nice, but generic :-(

What are they thinking!? I just don't understand Nintendo sometimes...

Now I kind of want someone at E3 or at the Best Buy demos tomorrow to try and record a video with the camera rotated behind Mario's back and see how many people think it suddenly looks like Galaxy 3.
Probably isn't far from the truth.

It also reminds me that there was a very specific moment in Galaxy when I realized how much I loathed that style of camera, too. "Luigi's Purple Coins" is only difficult because the camera follows you, causing you to constantly re-adjust your trajectory as you play. I realized that what was arguably the most difficult stage in the game would have been trivially easy had you been given a fixed camera, as you'd only ever have to make simple 90-degree turns. It was one of the biggest examples of "artificial difficulty" I can think of and just cemented itself as a reason why I tend to prefer 2D Mario in general.

If you can, watch the developer directs off the eshop of sm3dw.

Them tree/grass textures are fantastic.

All the eshop vids are the highest quality available. Makes a difference.

So can someone clarify, Is this the Jungle Beat/Galaxy 1 team?
Or the Galaxy 2, 3D Land team?

The latter, but according to Shikamaru the lead developers of Mario have all moved to the 2nd team. The first team is working on a mystery project and could be a more experimental thing like flipnote or a new game

If Nintendo wasn't adverse to the second stick controlling the camera, then maybe some of these things wouldn't be problems.

You would still need to constantly readjust the camera thus requiring you to take your thumb off of the jump button.

Cats wear bells! I never knew. I guess that way they can't sneak up on you or get locked in a place they're not supposed to be. Maybe I need to put a bell on my cat...

It's pretty common for cats to wear bells. It's especially encouraged these days because cats can be a menace to local wildlife. The bells prevent them from sneaking up on other animals.

Hopefully this is just a stop-gap game to hold us over until their actual 3D Mario releases. I seriously thought this was for the 3DS during the Direct show.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 was the first 3D game not to have a hub world. Starship Mario doesn't really count because the level select menu is exactly the same as in the 2D games (and the one used in 3D land)

Anyway, IGN did a Trailer Rewind or whatever of this and mentioned the Frog Suit is back in and Mario has a Yoshi-esque tongue when he has the Frog Suit. Seems interesting to say the least

I'm going to pass on this and getting a Wii U until Zelda U. I really wanted a single player Mario with Mario Kart 8 style and level of graphics. Maybe in another few years..

My gut is giving me a vibe that this will feel like a 3D version of the 'New' series. :(

That's cool. I guess they're really bringing the 2D style in 3D Mario with proper powerups.

Did you play Super Mario 3D Land? It was an excellent game.

Galaxy 3 would have had:

-better art direction
-an orchestrated soundtrack, no MIDI
-difficulty
-a non-isometric camera view
-creativity put into the level design

This is literally a gussed up version of 3D Land. This is not what I expected when I was hyping a 3D Mario. This is not good.

I dont think there is anything to worry about difficulty wise. Console Mario titles, even from the New series, are usually challenging enough. The rest remains to be seen.

True, I forgot about that. The lack of a hub world was actually the worst thing about SMG2 IMO. I'm sad they seem to be pushing 3D Mario in the direction of NSMB :-(

Some of the posts here are down right uninformed and lack some thought put into it before hitting that post button.

That isn't an NSMB direction. Nintendo just realized most people don't care for the bullshit in between and just want to get to the game/levels.

This looks so fucking bland. I thought they learned something from the Galaxy series

I was honestly expecting something that'd top 2. This is some bullshit. Even worse is if they get into a groove and this is the only style of 3D Mario that the Wii U gets in which case platforming Mario is dead to me.

Isnt the Racoon tail back too? That frog suit should make for some interesting jump sequences.

EDIT: Didnt alot of people complain about hub worlds back then?

holy shit I thought most people complained about SMG1's hub so the devs smartened up and took it away in SMG2. The hubs in 64 and Sunshine were shit too.

Now people want a hub back?

so my impressions after today

i was able to play three levels. the first was 2-6 or something. some guy had a gamepad and i had a wii remote. i don't know if you can play with a nunchuck, but none were available for multiplayer at the demo. controlling a character in 3d space with a d-pad kinda blows. the game will automatically bubble you if you fall behind the leader, rendering multiplayer largely useless. however, the levels are designed in a way to accommodate four people. there's not much in the way of speed or spectacle from what i played.

however i will say the cat suit is a pretty neat addition. it makes the game easier, but it's more like knuckles in 3d and makes me wonder if a mario/sonic crossover truly would work out well.

the last level i played, we had to all steer and jump on this thing floating down a riverbed. it was a lot like a mario party minigame.

overall it's just this disappointing thing, but i suppose that's what i should expect from ead tokyo.

I would love a new IP with a cat character rather than this nonsense.

Yeah I remember hearing the Tanooki suit is back too, plus some unannounced ones (of which I'm guessing the frog suit is one). The suits are really part of what can make or break the game IMO

Hub worlds are kind of annoying, but I really enjoyed Delfino Plaza (but that's because I really enjoyed Sunshine and its locale/atmosphere)

This game looks like 3D Land 2, my friend.

3D Land is a smaller, compact game made specifically for the 3DS ground up. To take the same design and apply it to Wii U is ludicrous. And I would argue it looks more bland than even 3D Land. CERTAINLY doesnt look like a game with a budget of Galaxy. Reminds me of Ratchet and Clank all4one.

Nope.

The hub world was what absolutely killed Galaxy 1's replayability. That urge to pick it up and play a few levels for a minute certainly vanishes quickly when you have to drag your feet through that nonsense.

Less filler, more game imo.

Yeah I remember hearing the Tanooki suit is back too
It's in the trailer.

I do :-( I say NSMB-like, because 3D Land was like 3D Mario, with NSMB influences (in art style, game structure, etc). 3D World looks the same.

I like a lot of the stage layout type stuff Im seeing here, but it would be nice to see slightly less linearity in other stages http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsYY0KtfgRM

Holy shit, this looks so much better with just one person playing the level.

It has a real sense of rhythm and finesse here, but it turns into a chaotic clusterfuck with 2 or more players hopping around. The difference is almost like night and day.

Would be interesting to see some of the other levels with just one player.

Does it do the stupid thing in NSMB where all players pause if one is hit? I HATE THAT MECHANIC.

I figured it's just another game in the line of the spinoffs NSMB and 3D Land. I don't think it's actually taking the place of the mainline Mario games, is it?

God I hope not. Mario Kart 8 is absolutely gorgeous... I just really want to see a 3D Mario with that art style.

Regarding the soundtrack: remember that Galaxy 2 had this same phase where it had MIDI music at first and then got its orchestrated soundtrack.

I was a bit disappointed in SMG1's hub world because it was so small and basic compared to SM64 and Sunshine's hub worlds. Now they've done away with it completely, which I'm very sad about.

Also, haven't you heard all the people dreaming about an 'open-world Mario game'? That's basically a giant hub world. A lot of people want it.

The levels in 3D World are bigger and much much more detailed with a lot more things going on in them. Watch the Dev Direct on the eShop. The game is fucking beautiful.

This game is continuing in the trend of "playing it safe" Nintendo

Apparently Mario Galaxy was too extreme for casuals, so they want back to more classic style but in 3D

And that's perfectly fine, cuz 3D Land felt like the first truly great 3D-esque Mario in awhile for me.

The thing that saddens me the most is the implications of handheld games being looked down upon and how games on a handheld wouldn't be considered mainline.

I do :-( I say NSMB-like, because 3D Land was like 3D Mario, with NSMB influences (in art style, game structure, etc). 3D World looks the same.

It uses most of its assets from the Galaxy games, so I'm not really sure what you're talking about. Most of its influences come from Super Mario Bros 3. 3D Mario games pretty much look like this.

I figured it's just another game in the line of the spinoffs NSMB and 3D Land. I don't think it's actually taking the place of the mainline Mario games, is it?

Sorry to say this, but there is no rule in saying what is a spin-off and what is not. A 3D Mario involves Mario navigating through 3D space with full 3D movement. 3D Land is a mainline game.

Just like overhyping FF XV based on nothing but cutscenes, I prefer not to overcriticize 3D World before we see a long playthrough. Game could be incredible. Or not.

At first I didn't like the cat suit. Now it's growing on me. At first it looked too much like 3D Land, however I can see where it's going for something of its own.

I'd prefer to see entire level playthroughs, 15-30 minutes of play at once.

I'm sure this game will be fun but...

Look at the evolution between each console mario game

You see the jump in terms of concept and style, not just the graphics but that each game did something more extreme and different. You have Mario in the Mushroom Kingdom, you have Mario in a dinosaur continent, you have Mario in 3D, you have Mario in paradise and then you have Mario in SPAAAAAAAAAAAACE!

Now, we have Mario back in the Mushroom Kingdom and it's multiplayer and the characters can transform into cats? I'm sorry, but this is not what I expected from the next big title.

And then you have this underwhelming usual mario game that would best be fit for the 3DS and just looks less interesting.

So for right now, I am not buying a Wii U anytime soon until Nintendo gets their act together.
I barely hyped their direct and I still was left with disappointment, best thing about it was Megaman in smash bros. But who cares about my opinions, I might as well get a PS4 and stick with my 3DS, Mario and Luigi Dream Team seems original and fun.
