Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

Having just recently finished Super Mario 3D Land, I gotta say I'm pretty disappointed that this is our major console Mario title. Not knocking the game at all as it's great. But I just hoped Nintendo would take Mario in a new direction like they did with Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy.

Honestly, I feel the same...

It is indeed being made by EAD Tokyo 2. EAD Tokyo 1 was the team primarily behind OoT 3D, so they haven't been completely free.

Do you have a source for this? I've just seen interviews with the producer/director where it is sort of implied.

.......Nintendo needs to wake up and smell the shit because the causal gamer is gone forever from their systems. Wii was a word of mouth device and all those people have moved on to facebook games, mobile games and the others don't even like games. Why do they constantly try to get more people to play games? That is like me asking someone who doesnt like football to watch football. This bullshit of 3Dworld game is a prime example of Nintendo trying to get casuals back on their system. It is so obvious that Reggie even states that "Titles such as Donkey Kong, and New super Mario Bros, Wii fit all sold really well, that is why they are coming back"

They need to go after gamers, nostalgia, epic game design, full 3D worlds no more bullshit 2D safe games. I have been a Nintendo fan for as long as I remember (back in the NES days) and I cannot believe Nintendo is still grasping at the casual audience. It is like an ex girfriend breaking up with you and every once an awhile you ask her to come out with you , it'll be fun like old times..then she tells you " Listen I don't want to , I've moved on. Then you do it again and again.

UGGHHH.

Look! Full 3D World! Full camera control! Worlds bigger, more detailed, more complex, and more platforming-focused than Galaxy!

Like i said before E3:

People will first complain and be hyped more and more to the releasedate of this game.
We have seen only a little.

Besides that, the music is been made by the 2 best componists of nintendo.

It's kinda ironic that new Sonic game has no acceleration curve, it's straight up either walking or running but the new Mario game is kinda the opposite.

Uhhhhh...

Is that full camera control? Galaxy would give slight movement to tilt the camera a bit at times like in that gif and you were tied to the whims of the camera AI.

Uhhhhh...

But it's still a "walk down a predetermined path until you reach the exit" game, as opposed to being an adventure game with a world to explore. I wouldn't necessarily call that a "full 3D world".

It looks good and I'm sure it'll be fun as hell. I'm just annoyed that they still haven't embraced online coop for these types of games. Nintendo why!?

Because they want you the have the genuine feeling of satisfaction when you slap your friend in the face for being a dick

Chasing after the same restricted demographic means you limit your potential market and profits at the same time making the hobby seem closed off to and for most people.

"Casuals" have always existed. They existed on PS2 where they played Singstar and quiz games. They do move around, yes, but mobile and Facebook gaming are already showing signs of slowed growth.

If video games want to be taken as seriously as movies do, they need to be as accessible as movies are. If they want to cater to the same people who already like them, pack it up, because we have an interactive comic book industry.

Games like Link Between 2 Worlds, Smash 4, Bayonetta 2, Wind Waker HD, SMT X FE, X, & The Wonderful 101, Luigi's Mansion - heck even Donkey Kong Country Returns - cater to 'gamers, nostalgia, and epic design' in their one way or another. Some of them also might appeal to 'casuals'.

They're a business and they have responsibilities to their shareholders to make a profit. They haven't done that for 2 years now. They need titles that appeal to a wide audience, as well as the more niche, hardcore stuff, if they are to survive at all.

Love what I'm seeing for this game. I'm SO ready for it.

I don't get the hate. It looks fun. It looks pretty. It looks platformy. That's a winner for me in the World of Mario.

We'll probably get the 'epic' Mario in a year or two, so I don't understand the fuss.

I wish Nintendo made a point of showing us what the single player looks like rather than hiding it in the dev video where most won't see it. It's very similar to Galaxy in terms of camera angle and world complexity.

But it's still a "walk down a predetermined path until you reach the exit" game, as opposed to being an adventure game with a world to explore. I wouldn't necessarily call that a "full 3D world".

So exactly like the Galaxy games. Or almost any platformer ever. I'm sure there will be some exploration.

I really like how that looks, but I'm displeased by the lack of platforming dangers. Early level probably, but it is enough to bother me.

they should give players an option to bring the camera behind mario ala galaxy. of course, that wouldn't fix the game's other problems, namely the running controls, but it might help.

i think it's either 1-2 or 1-4. it was definitely world 1, but i forgot to take note of the specific level.

I'm pretty sure the amount of dimensions in a world isn't determined by the win conditions of the world. Just because a level has a goal doesn't mean there is only one path to the goal, and even if there was, how does that differ from the majority of Galaxy levels which were linear affairs? And how does there being a goal post make it impossible to put other win conditions in a level? They can have you collect things or do other tasks to unlock the path to the goal post, like in that level of the 3D World demo where you have to collect 5 keys. Also, every level contains a number of hidden green stars for you to find.

I really like how that looks, but I'm displeased by the lack of platforming dangers. Early level probably, but it is enough to bother me.

Pretty sure that's the first level.

Galaxy was like that, but they don't have to be. Platformers can be open and focused at the same time. 3D land was fairly open in a lot of levels, and I'm sure this one will be too, likely more so.

Are we though? Some people are suggesting this is WiiU's "proper" Mario, and that's my beef with this otherwise probably ok sequel/side-game. If Nintendo's serving us this instead of a legit evolution for Mario then Xbone isn't the worst thing to come outta E3.

My two concerns:

1) Some of the videos make the controls look like they are the same "8 directions only" as Super Mario 3D Land. Now maybe it's just those players were using d-pads and that the Gamepad offers full 360 degrees movement, but I don't know.

2) Will the levels feel too big and open in single player because they've been designed for four people? This was quite apparent in New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

i understand lag is a real issue with online games, and with the wii u it would probably be more problematic than most when it comes to a platformer, but this one would desperately benefit from having your own screen available. if nintendo could have, they should have done something with three screens even. the current solution where player one controls all movement and everyone else has to follow suit really sucks.

There were two adventure type Mario's on the Wii. Why not on Wii U as well?

I still don't see how this isn't a 'legit' evolution of Mario. It's just a change you don't like.

When they showed 3DLand for 3DS I was interested, but not blowed away, after the "stunning surprise" of Galaxy. Then I played it and to me it's as magnificient as Galaxy.
Plus, I see in the transition from M64 and Sunshine to Galaxy 1 and 2 and than to Land a transition from the "open world adventure 3d platform", to the "straight to the platforming action" 3D platform, with mixed elements from the 2D mechanics.
This is just the evolution of the same path.
In terms of scale and level range, we already saw levels as big as the galaxy ones, with a 400 sec time limit and the clocks around the level to increase the time. And the exploration is some level is even bigger than Galaxy, where we ofter were "shot" from a planet to another without the chance to get back.
So, I can't wait to play it.

I also think that the 2D approach of DK, the "galaxy-esque" approach of Sonic and the 3D approach of this will provide some sort of platforming heaven to Wii U owners this fall/winter

I have no idea why this wouldn't be considered a "proper" Mario game.

I agree. I think there will be some exploration. I'm just saying linearity in a platformer isn't a bad thing, and I'm the biggest Mario 64 fan ever. The Galaxies proved to me that they have mastered linear platforming, so I am completely confident in whatever they do. I do hope the worlds will be opened up a little more though.

If you played 3D Land... thats not an issue later in the game... :p

Yeah, 3D Land got much harder later on (not too difficult, though). :)

And there are actually players that are turned off by too difficult games. E.g. all bad reviews on Amazon.de for DKCR 3DS only have the difficulty as an issue. Of course "proper" gamers will laugh at this, but it's a legimitate reason for other to sell/not buy a game.

I hope the trailer music is just a placeholder, because sincerely is shit and the loop too short, doesnt sound like Mahito at all. Even if they added a real orchesta to that song it wouldnt be good. And dont get me started with the underworld music, thats some new super mario bros shit copying going on there.

I really don't get the complaints about this game. It looks amazing, everyone who has played it says it plays brilliantly.

If this game came out with any other name, you'd be going on about how innovative it is, how nice it looks, how multiplayer 3D Mario is amazing.

I fail to see how it's attempting to get "casuals". Anybody who has played 3D Land will attest to that, it gets really tricky and is a fantastic game.

Yes, Nintendo could have made a Metroid game, or a Starfox game, or something to "win back" the core, except it wouldn't work. Those games barely make over 2 million sales, if they even manage to break 1 million.

Nintendo is a business and they need to do what is best for that business. Super Mario 3D Land spurred sales of the 3DS drastically, and its merge of 2D and 3D Mario games made it the fastest selling 3D Mario game to exist. It is what the Wii U needs. Bundle this with a Wii U for $300 around Black Friday, and the Wii U will fly off shelves.

They have implied that the music isn't done yet, and it will be orchestrated

I guess "proper" might not be the best word. Tentpole might be better. WiiU needs a Mario game that propels the series into a brand new direction. Previous Nintendo home consoles got theirs' and the potential of those games was apparent from their trailers. This doesn't come close to fitting the bill.

People please understand Super Mario 3D World minus 3D = Super Mario World.

Yes. The Wii U game only included "3D" as a reference to the 3DS game. It makes no sense really. It's as good as

Super Mario 3D 64
Super Mario 3D Sunshine
Super Mario 3D Galaxy
Super Mario 3D Galaxy 2

Besides, nintendo already said before that this game was based on 3dLand.
Why expect something else than?

I'll hope that we get 2 part's like in 3d land.
First playthrough Easy
Second playthrough Hard

Confirmed power ups:
- raccoon mario
- cat mario
- fire mario

Still would like to see a cape mario.
But so far, so good.

edit: so many questions left, what about the hub, what about the strange level part where you can rotate arround a building (bonus level or extra mode?)

They have implied that the music isn't done yet, and it will be orchestrated

Even if orchestrated the main theme would be horrible. Is bland abd repetive as hell, theres really not anything saving that theme. And the underworld stuff lazy. I would love if they were entirely removed in the final game but logically that will not be the case.
