Metal Gear Solid V (PS3/360/PS4/XBO/Maybe PC) - Extended 9 minute E3 trailer

I too have yet to play Peace Walker. Had no idea it was considered a main title until last year. Guess I was so fed up with the series after 4 that I stopped paying attention to MGS news.

It seems that V is a direct continuation of PW, with several returning characters. Which is strange considering it ended up not being a numbered title. Still, can't complain about having a "new" MGS waiting for me even before V comes out.

There was nothing wrong with MGS4. It was a fantastic game. Peace Walker is a very important game in the series. It shows the start of Big Boss' army of Outer Heaven.

So this is a prequel? Why does is have a number in it's name when it's just a prequel? I mean, I know three was too but it was the first in the main solid series that was and it played a very important part in back story. Didn't they wrap all this shit up with four? This game looks great but does anybody else feel like the whole drive and setting behind the narrative feels lost?

MGS3 - 1964
Peace Walker - 1974
MGS5 - 1975 and 1984

Yes it's a prequel and a sequel.

I'm assuming it's advisable to finish Peace Walker before playing this, started the HD edition a while back but I wasn't really digging the structure nor the vestiges of it's portable origins, so it got shelved. Is it worth soldiering on through it for the additional Big Boss, Miller and co backstory?

Is that a red beret on Eli's shoulder? Think WWII era SAS members used red berets, they use a sand colour now. Could it be a British paratrooper's beret? Not that we need any more evidence it's Liquid.

You definitely need to at least watch the cutscenes of Peace Walker to understand MGS5, as it is a direct sequel with the same characters and many references.

Everything is great but damn..."bloody battlefield dirt"...that is some poorly translated Paulo Coehlo level stuff. I kinda wish they'd get the lady who translated MGS2 back, she knew what was up.

How come the guys who haven't played PW getting hyped up about MGSV?

MGSV is a sequel to PW ! Go play it first !

lol

Friends of mine that have never played an MGS game are getting hyped. I understand getting excited for gameplay and the gorgeousness of the game, but MGS is primarily about story. /facepalm

MGS already has a convoluted story, skipping even one part of the main series will just jumble up the whole following of the series...

I played PW pretty late myself (HD collection on PS3)

That song, 'Sins of the Father', what musical genre is that?

Japanese neo-soul? My best guess. Amazing song.

Anyone else loving the facial expressions in this game? Eli in particular: you can really see his disillusionment, his ego, AND his determination, just by his face. This is next-gen. And it is brilliant.

It's not some some super secret club. People like what they saw and they will play it. Good for the franchise, nothing else.

-Someone who's played since the original NES MG.

I never said it was a bad thing, just a bit odd. I've been a fan since '98 and since then I've gotten a lot of friends/family into the series.

And the MG on NES isn't a real MG game. It's a cheap knock-off and Kojima gets bummed every time it's brought up (he didn't make it nor have a say in it). The true originals were on the MSX2 released only in Japan (until MGS3 Subsistence).

is the trailer PS3/360 or PS4/Xbone? cuz I can't tell
but I kinda think it's current gen from screens

PW has plenty of gameplay, thankfully. Too bad it's a shit game. MGSV needs to follow that path, being open-world and everything, there's no reason for this game to have 20 minutes of cutscenes followed by a small, 5 minutes gameplay break. It should be the other way around.

Peace Walker was fantastic. Clearly built for PSP, though. I personally love getting to the cutscenes. That's what I'm most excited about; the story and how it's told in the game. Gameplay has always been fun in the series, but I find myself always getting -most- excited for the scenes.

Looks next gen to me.
Nothing I saw looks to be possible at that level on the current systems imo
I agree the game looks beyond current gen but the jaggies & textures & snakes beard looks a bit ruff compared to other games if you know I mean, thats why I said I'm not sure

That was Kaz not Big Boss. Big Boss has the lines when he frees Kaz in the trailer and also right at the end he says he is a demon. But Kiefer sounds worn out as well.

Not gonna lie it is a little tough to tell who is saying what due to the new VA, but considering their interests are aligned and Big Boss still sounds worn out as fuck, I stick by my statement! Thanks for clarifying, got to watch again now, good excuse anyway.

You won't like this, but I hope that for once this MGS will be newcomer friendly. To expect people to play through five games just to connect with one game's story and characters is just too much. This game looks way too groundbreaking to just be limited to MG fans.

Also, you're way downplaying the gameplay in the MGS games. The gameplay is great, dynamic, and frequently innovative. It is important to the series, and QTE bullshit would not suffice for me, no matter how good the story was.

For character development and other neat stuff, the Briefing Files & Data Files (kinda like optional 'codec' conversations) are great for the most part.

MGS has a deep story arch and, considering all the reoccurring characters and plot points from PW, I don't see how this one could possibly be newcomer friendly. Hopefully we get a preorder bonus disc like we did with MGS4 which throws in some summary of the major events that took place leading up to the game.

Red Dead Redemption finally has a chance to appear on PC now.

Joking aside, MGS3 and RDR are two of my favorite games for various reasons; if this at all captures what I loved about each then combines them well, it will be amazing

My prayers have been answered.

It's really not necessary at all to know the stories of the previous MGS games when every new one does its own thing and completely throws out the window the things that were established before. Newcomers will enjoy MGSV just fine, both in plot and gameplay.

if you didn't play Peace Walker you'll most likely be scratching your head

Completely throws out the window things that were established before? Hardly. I agree that it probably isn't necessary to play MGS1, 2, and 4 to understand 5, but playing MGS3 and PW would probably be a really, really good idea.

MGS3 > MGS: PW > MGSV > MG1 > MG2 > MGS > MGS2 > MGS4

Think I got the timeline for this right unless something else comes after MGSV like a reboot of MG1 and MG2.

Playing it in that format will clear everything story related. I guess.

That's right. Playing them in that order, or the order they were released in will work just fine.

Quantic Dream can do it on the PS3!

Don't believe their lies, they just want to force you guys to watch crying mechas. PW fans don't want to suffer alone.

I actually really liked Peace Walker's gameplay and the CQC was actually super fun/worked consistently compared to MGS4. The story is pretty cool/weird too.

If you're going to skip Portable Ops, why not skip MG1 too? It's not as good as MG2.

Also I would strongly advise playing at least some of the VR Missions for MGS and MGS2.

I do find it rather annoying that Peace Walker is now being forced on us as main line cannon I never played it because I always figured the PSP games would always be side stuff, I guess I need to go back and play it, which is fine but at the same time it would be nice if the intro of MGSV were to catch us up to speed on the Peace Walker stuff because it appears most people have only played the Main Line series and maybe Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2.
