To me Mario 3D World is the game that would have logically fit between Super Mario World and Super Mario 64. It really seems like Nintendo was trying to be ambitious during the GameCube years and then intentionally took a step back as the technology advanced. This could have been for financial reasons, accessibility or whatever, but I'm not liking it.
The developers did say they think of 3D World as the ultimate culmination of ALL the Mario games. If that's the case, I hope we can put this throw-back style of Mario to bed moving forward. I want them to feel they accomplished their goals and are now set on making a deep experience for the next one.
Nope. This is Mario now. Say goodbye to all the Sunshines and Galaxies and say hello to all the 3D Lands and New Super Mario Bros. It's pretty obvious this is what they want from the franchise. Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine were missteps.
