Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

I haven't been following this at all.

But the 3DS Mario 3D platformer was one of my favorite Mario platformers of all time, and perhaps my favorite 3DS game so far. I'd perhaps have slightly preferred a new Mario Galaxy game, but... I still find this news incredibly exciting. No?

Just no, really...if it happens to be another one, it will be a nice surprise, but for now stop being on denial, just...stop.

I hope anyone who believes that a new 3D isn't coming is joking, it's seriously baffling me how little hope you people have. It's almost implied to be in development. You can talk to me when it arrives, cause I'll be laughing in your faces. This game is obviously just something to keep the Mario hype alive until next year's inevitable big reveal.

I'm pretty uninformed when it comes to things like this, but I'm just assuming a 2D side-scrolling game would take less time and resources than a large-scale 3D adventure like Metroid or something.

I mean it's different for game to game.

But always felt platformers (2D or 3D) aren't easy beasts to craft because it is all about the level design. The placement and speed of the enemies. The distance between platforms. The momentum needed by the character/ The obstacles put into their way. Everything needs to work in perfect harmony while usually trying to do something new.

And repeating this dozens of times in different scenarios.

This. I can't wrap my head around this. Three years and a talented team of 100+ and all they have to show for it is a sidescrolling platformer in DK?! It's just unbelievable to me.

I can totally buy the EDGE story about porting the Super Mario 3DS sequel to Wii U though, sad as it seems.

They probably worked on MK8 as well.

Not allowed.

You are being sarcastic right?

Right?

Oh my god so much bitching. Do you guys really think that THIS is their next true 3D game? Obviously it won't replace the full console Mario experience, what problem do you people have with an extra fun game on the side?

I was in denial for a while too. I'm working on acceptance now.

I mean, it could be fun, right? Right?

I'm conflicted on how I feel about this.

On one hand, the business model for releasing this game and then a higher production value 3D Mario down the road makes a lot of sense. It's a good idea. It is risky, but the payoff is huge. It helps to justify an even larger budget for the next 3D Mario game because the audience will be larger, which will increase the chance of it becoming another major critical success like the Galaxy games.

On the other hand, Mario really is just a platformer. Those games are not that easy to improve on. They're just running and jumping. They could see this and think they need to get out while they're ahead, before those games become unsustainable. Instead of pumping big money into games that are going to impress less and less switch their resources right now and make Mario the loveable huggable for-everyone platformer. Maybe look into making another serious 3D Mario much further down the road when a new gimmick becomes obvious.

I don't know. Either way, I'm happy with this game. It looks good and hopefully it has a lot of content to back it up.

Rare's game just confuses me.

You already have Sonic, Rayman, Mario, Luigi, and now DKCR2? How many platformers do they need this fall?

Either Mario 3D Land should have been pushed to Spring or DKCR2 should have. We don't need so many platformers all at once around the same time.

And its not even like I don't want DKCR2 from Rare. The first was amazing and of course I want part 2 but I was expecting part 2 as part of the release schedule for next fall (2014).

It would have made so much more sense to push DKCR2 as a big holiday game in Fall 2014 alongside Smash Bros. And what happened to all the rumors about Rare working on a new IP? We had an almost confirmation from Peer from IGN (who is pretty trust worthy) and then last e3 (2012) Nintendo said they had a trailer ready but decided against showing it. Are you telling me the trailer they had ready last year was for DK? Why hold back on it then?

I can't fathom Rare not being able to work on 2 games at once or that the only game they have been working on since their game is DKCR2. Hell I would think if this was the only game they were working on, it should have been a launch title! We waited 3+ years for this game? Sure it will be a 9/10 game but at this pace from Rare we won't see another title until 2016. WTF are the teams at Nintendo doing?

EDIT: BTW the Edge story is just them speculating. No proof. For all we know this is the next Mario game they had planned all along.

I don't get the "real" Mario or "innovation" talk. Mario largely is the same. The one big change we had was from 2D side scroller to 3D platformer. Sunshine following in that same footsteps. Galaxy games were AMAZING but besides the flying from planet to planet, the actual meat and potatoes was still traditional Mario platforming which was established in Mario 64.

The new Mario game is being developed by the same team that did Galaxy 2 and the Mario 3DS game. How can it not be good? They even said its a culmination of ideas from both games. We have possibly seen less than 10% of the actual game. It has 4 player co-op. I think the disappointment comes from people's warped sense and definition of "innovation". The real innovation will be from clever platforming challenges or game play mechanisms we haven't seen yet in Mario games. Not the setting or look really.

Of course if the graphics looked better or aimed for a more realistic look (say like MK8 or even the Mario model from Smash) people wouldn't be so fast to brush it off. And I think this is the real reason people are complaining. The art style is too similar to the 3DS game and the 2D games. Galaxy stood out even if playing it was similar Mario fun. I have no doubt given the team behind this game, the game itself will be spectacular. Same with Retro and DKCR2. Just question the timing of releasing both so close to each other and Sonic World, Rayman, and other platformers.

Personally their release schedule should be switched around. If you are releasing DKCR2 this fall, switch Mario 3D Land with Mario Kart 8.

Seems like people look for the wrong things in a platform game, especially a Mario one...
3DWorld looks amazing and has a frantic pace as it's due for a Mario game. Galaxies were loose and slooow in comparison, Nintendo here finally achieved to incorporate the manic gameplay of the 2d titles in the 3d series. It's the final step of an almost 20 year long process, how can't people see this?

Because, GRAPHICS!!

If it was this same mechanics but visually was more like Mario Kart 8, almost to no one would be complaining, and this is actually sad.

Multiplayer, in and of itself, is not innovation. Multiplayer is something people have been asking for for years in Mario games. Nintendo is just now implementing it. By innovation, I meant in terms of level design and art direction in addition to just adding the most obvious mutiplayer feature.

Huh, no? It is hard to implement in a 3D enviroment like a platformer and to balance it out. And Nintendo is trying to do so since SM64. It is a BIG deal, even that I only play single, this cannot be dissed as nothing.

Huh, point me where it is implied that it is in development? So far we have at least the main producer of the 3D Mario games(Yoshiaki Koizumi), the director of Galaxy 2(Koichi Hayashida) working on this title, so where are you taking this ideas from?

Yeah man, Rare is weird these days, working for Microsoft and shit.

Seeing the trailer, i'm pretty sure multiplayer will change A LOT of things in a platformer 3D environment ...

Oh it is. It's made by the Galaxy team I believe it was said. It's not a side scroller. It's the 3D Mario game for the Wii U. Will it be the only one remains to be seen but at the moment this is what we have. This is THE game. Period.

Of course I'm purely speculating, but when they announce a new 3D Mario (which I don't think they can NOT do), you won't think my ideas are so wild and dumb.

One thing is that they can develop any other game in the future, but as of right now, this is Nintendo's Flagship 3D Mario title, done by the same core team who has done all of the other ones, and there is not that points of them having other game in production.

Well I'm not denying that. My point is I'm just surprised that people think this will replace the usual console Mario.

I saw this at Best Buy yesterday and all my reservations were obliterated. It is beautiful to look at, and very fun. I admit I'm one of those who expect Nintendo is working on another, more Galaxy-esque 3D Mario experience that we'll see in a year or two, but 3D World doesn't look like a half-assed stopgap solution at all. I can't wait to get it.

So you think this is the last Mario game Nintendo ever puts out? Or at least on the Wii U?

Sure not! But looking at how they approach the Mario series is safe to say there won't be other one to the Wii U. Galaxy 2 was something out of the ordinary, Nintendo usually puts 1 per generation.

All I'm saying is: don't expect another one. If it comes it will be a great surprise, but is not a given thing.

I'm sure this will be fun but it seems very vanilla for a mainline Mario game. Have we seen the hub world/over world map yet?

And does anybody else not think a cat suit really fits into the Mario universe? Seems weird to me.

Totally disagree, the Wii U is still early in its life so there is a lot more room for another game, especially cause this type of game takes less effort and production than one with open world.

Edit: the very fact that it's coming so soon after announcement tells me that there's more to come from Mario. You really think we'll go through 2015-2016 without a Mario platformer?

Totally agree on this part. It's the best of most world. The level creativity of the Galaxy games mixed with the easy to play nature of the 2D games. Also the sales speak for themselves:

Super Mario Galaxy: 11.72 million copies worldwide as of March 31, 2013.
Super Mario Galaxy 2: About 7.04 million copies worldwide as of June 31, 2013.
Super Mario 3D Land: 8.29 million copies worldwide as of March 31, 2013 (1,5 years on the market).

Do you think Nintendo got the old illustrator out of retirement to do the little Mario/Luigi/Toad/Peach logos again like they did for Super Mario 3D Land?

Ah, well I certainly hope not. I enjoyed the hell out of this announcement, but a single player 3D Mario game is something every Nintendo home console should get. And so far it has happened.

So, I'm totally expecting special worlds that will effectively double the game's length again.

I wonder if they will do that again

It worked for the handheld one because it made it easier for people to beat the game. Since was meant to be played in chunks. Not sure how I feel if pulled the same trick in the console space.

It's like the blandness and staleness of the NSMB series has infected 3D Mario.

Biggest disappointment ever. You know it's a bad sign when you're thinking 'well maybe the next one will be great'.

they probably recycled 'em

They recycling assets, man. It's what they do

Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One

Not a platformer.

*edit* Besides even if it was. It is SO flawed, it wouldn't really stand strong as an example.

After the grand Galaxy games, people were obviously expecting greatness, and god knows the Wii U needed it. This game will always live in the shadow of what could have been. It's like you wanted to go to a three michelin-star french restaurant but ended up at your local diner (however good the food there might be). This game isn't gonna win game of the year, score 10's everywhere and convince gamers that WiiU means business. This will be a fun ripple on the gaming ocean, instead of the storm that we wanted, and Nintendo needed.

Its one thing to have opinions. But this is just pure fantasy. One thing I really don't get about you guys complaining about 3d World in comparison to Galaxy. Galaxy is a collection of fantastic ideas in a space/gravity theme. Whats to keep 3d World from being a collection of fantastic ideas with a multiplayer/2d pace focus? What about 3d Land's style keeps it from being bold in design and creativity?

As I see it, the problem with this game isn't what is is, but what it isn't. It might be a fun experience in it's own right and i would be perfectly okay with it, if we knew that this was just a multiplayer spin-off. However this is their all out 3D Mario, we aren't getting anything else for at least several years.

You can disagree, it is fair, but to try to guess the future, I need to look at the past, and the past says that is normally one 3D Mario game per console. And the only console that received two 3D Mario games, one of them was a sequel.

So all I'm saying is, the chance of we have a new 3D Mario game that look completly different than this one is very slim.

Ah, well I certainly hope not. I enjoyed the hell out of this announcement, but a single player 3D Mario game is something every Nintendo home console should get. And so far it has happened.

The thing is, since galaxy, a SINGLE Player only 3D Mario game doesn't exist.

All right let me put in this way, Mario 64 was a breakthrough and if we look closely they repeated it's formula( collecting 120 stars stuff) till Galaxy 2. Since galaxy, is clear they had put efforts, in making the 3D Mario game more broader, Galaxy is way more linear then their predecessors, and Galaxy 2 goes this route even further, by taking out the hub world. another thing they wanted to implement, and this is since SM64, was a Multiplayer mode, and that first happen with Galaxy, when the second player used the pointer to help Mario.

3D land was a breakthrough, cause it was a new formula for the series, it has achieved the broader aspect they wanted, it was a perfect formula that unite the 2D and 3D Mario games. The issue I guess is that they've done it in the handheld, giving the impression that, this new formula was something for the handheld thing, and not their NEW approach to the 3D Mario games.

Again, they can go back to the SM64 like formula, and I would be glad since I love it, but 3D World seems aligned with what they have been doing, simple as that.

I was just thinking about what they can't do in the game because of the format. Like full underwater levels. I never played 3D Land. Did it have underwater levels? Also, even if you can move the camera around in single player, since you can't in multi-player it forces all "secrets" to be right there only in the form of hidden blocks insead of other places you can't see without moving the camera. If you have to move the camera to find secret things, then that means you might not be able to get 100% completion in multi-player, which would not happen.

There are underwater levels in 3D Land. There are secrets in 3D Land that are hidden well.
