Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

3D Land is a great game. So happy to see a similar approach on Wii U.

It's got some extra complexity to the level design, too, which is awesome.

What I understand by "hodgepodge of ideas" means a situation where you had lots of ideas but no coherent way to tie them together. I don't see how that would describe Super Mario 3D World. Just because it has elements from previous games (every Mario game has except the first one obviously) doesn't make it a hodgepodge of ideas.

Like what he said. He has lots of ideas but he can't use them all because that wouldn't make a good game. See?
This.

Bringing back old enemies and taking cues from prior Mario games (which they've all done!) doesn't equal a "hodgepodge", particularly if they all work well together and don't seem disjointed or unnecessary additions.

Super Mario Galaxy, though, borders on "hodgepodge". I mean, various long complicated intros, unlockable storybook, garish and illogical hub world, larger exploration environments but also short and sweet narrow corridor platforming levels, half-assed flying power-up bonus, an excessive plethora of disconnected themed settings, ball-rolling, ray surfing, bubble blowing, garbage blasting, penguin racing, clone dodging, boring purple coin hunts, collecting star bits...

A lot of it worked (thanks to the overarching space concept), but at least some of it was objectionable filler.

I'm looking forward to getting both the "finish the level as fast as possible" style mario fun with flagpoles, paired with the item hunting style mario fun with those little star icons below the coin count.

I wonder what made them go with those green stars versus star coins.

I'm over the fact that this doesn't appear to be the revolutionary game I was hoping for. Now all I'm concerned about is will it be any fun single player? Guess I'll just have to wait and see.

It has the same basic graphics as Galaxy, but its like a compilation of the boring parts of it.
Far less scale to all the environments, camera much further out, no whimsy or creativity to any of the level designs shown.

Sunshine is/was much more creative than this looks so far.

As I said, it's like the blandness of NSMB has infected 3D Mario.

Oh shit, how did you get a review copy of the game?

The E3 demo was, what, 4 levels? If you played 3D Land, you would know that there were a notoriously huge number of levels in it, and they were quite varied. The best of them rivaled or surpassed the best of Galaxy.

Not even close. The "best of them" just took a single aspect of a Sunshine/Galaxy level (ex: rotating floating blocks) and made it into an entire level...

Creativity was definitely lacking in 3D Land. It was fun, but not creative or that impressive from a level design perspective.

I will agree to disagree on that, but if we take that as true, why do you think the same team making 3D World that made Galaxy will all of a sudden become creatively bankrupt? I think we can attribute any "toning down" that went on with 3D Land to the hardware. What would stop these guys from making more expansive and varied levels now that they are back developing a game for powerful hardware with standard controls?

I expect this game to be like a Galaxy game without the gravity mechanic, and without "go off in any direction to explore" levels due to the multiplayer.

I'm actually pretty upset ill never get to play multi on this, I'm kinda warming up to the fact that its just a bigger version of the 3DS game. I'll prob cave and buy it day one :(

being concerned about a Mario game being any fun is really exaggerated

besides, this is what Hayashida said about the matter
“To those people, I would like to say that we’re planning so many interesting new ideas for single player that you shouldn’t necessarily feel like you are restricted to playing this game in multiplayer. As we said earlier, we had this kind of Galaxy-style development, where we threw out all sorts of different ideas and what we’ve come up with is really a lot of fun whether you’re playing single player or multiplayer.”

“Ever since Super Mario 64, we’ve always wanted to create a multiplayer 3D Mario game, but there were lots of challenges, and I feel like now we’ve gotten to the point where we’ve come up with the perfect expression, which is a very satisfying multiplayer experience in a 3D Mario world. I think people will have all different reactions to some of the developments that we’re putting forward, some of which are very reminiscent of the Galaxy series style of play.”

Time to hunt the thread concerning split screen. How far away are we going to be able to get from our co-op partners?

Thats what boring about it. We been to the mushroom kingdom a billion times already.

Give me the Mushroom Kingdom over space any day of the week. But give me Dinosaur Land first.

yeah, mario 3d land had about 90 levels which is crazy good. from what we've seen the 3d world levels are a lot bigger understandably so if we get the same ish amount then woooo

on top of that, this is 4 player co-op. So the replay value will be high.

I wouldnt be surprised if theres some mini game/multiplayer modes, outside the main game.

It would be funny if it turns out Super Mario 3D World is just as fun as Mario Galaxy despite it not having the same initial wow factor in terms of its more creative concept with anti-gravity and spherical level design. We'll see what GAF thinks of 3D World come December, then reflect on it a few months later.

This is still the best Mario design. Why can't we get another like this:

The mushroom kingdom always changes based on the game though. Outside of the castle, Nintendo doesn't really bother having a 'set' geography.

Edit: Just look at 3D land, that was set in the mushroom kingdom as well, and Nintendo didn't just limit themselves to one set world.

I wonder if the secret levels in Sunshine were inspired for Galaxy? Watching YT videos of Sunshine, the game looks fun. I just don't remember much of it since it's been so long.

This is still the best Mario design. Why can't we get another like this:

I want a sequel to Mario 64 more than anyone, it's my favorite game ever. I'm also super excited for this though, it has the potential to be amazing.

Plus if they try and go for a Mario 64 sequel there is a chance they go to far with the open level design and give us more of a Mario Sunshine game.

At least we get the mushroom kingdom motif on a home console again. Or some of it looks like dinosaur island. It will probably be incredibly diverse, which was the best thing about 64.

So looking forward to play this in multiplayer. Only thing I'm worried about is that it's going to be too easy.

If they follow the special world level design, we might get 30 or less courses, return of Cosmic mario, and the like.

Imagine trying to finish a level with a 30 second timer with 4 player co op. You are going to die a lot, or 4 Cosmic mario/Luigi/Peach/Toad constantly chasing you. An already hetic game is going to turn super frustating and will cause a lot of rage quit if they get it right...

Went to Nintendo World Store during lunch today to try out their demos.
Here are my impressions.. copied from ze Twitter

Super Mario 3D World
Odd title aside, it's a nice clean look.
Played with 3-4 people depending on the stage, and it can get a bit chaotic. Really need to communicate with teammates even more so than the New series I feel.
Got to try out all levels on display sans the boss battle.
I mean they looked good and had some neat challenges.
Seems like the game's gonna emphasis secrets like the 3DS counterpart so look everywhere
Especially with the catsuit which allows you to climb up things.
And I think you meow as well.. wasn't 100% sure on that end
The scratch attack is pretty boss though.
The clear pipes.. which I thought was just marketing crap.. seem like they could be used in a lot of clever ways for stage design
There's one end segment that has you and teammates trying to time getting clocks while avoiding the.. Don't remember their names.. the fuzzy creatures that are usually on like the lines that just move in one path
It was a fun little challenge and could think of some great stages just designed around using those.
I do hope they support the nunchuck for this game though. Found using the D-Pad to work but not something prefer for it.
And the main theme is catchy, but imagine some of it is placeholder since the water theme uses the slide theme from 64.
Oh and tried Luigi and Mario. They play similar enough in most stages.

I like the Mario bros 3 death theme throwback and peach's secret slide theme returning.

I want a no time limit option to just goof around in stages.

Why not let people use the analog stick to pan the camera, instead of having people tilt their controller around awkwardly? I would probably only use it to find secrets the way it is implemented now, not to keep the camera behind my character and make the game play more like the other marios.

Edit: Besides, clearly the level design here is built for the zoomed out, isometric camera. Whether you like that or not (and I'm not sure I do) you might as well play the game as intended.

I believe you can.

In fact, you can use the second control stick to move the camera around.

*E* Beaten. :P

Because this way it seems you can move the camera while jumping/playing. You can also use analog stick to pan the camera.

Ok, I am getting a bit more convinced after seeing that GIF in the OP and that developer video. My first impression was not a good one, as it did not wow me. It felt like a multiplayer focused game and I even thought it was a 3DS game for the first few seconds.

Anyway, the game is growing on me, the more I see. The camera movement makes the game look so much better than that trailer did and the single player portions that are shown looks great.
My fear that single player portion might be ruined(in favor of local multiplayer) is somewhat calmed. It looks better than I thought and I do need to see more single player footage before being convinced entirely. This game could be my most anticipated game, show me more gameplay Nintendo! (From other worlds too)

Both console NSMB games showed that this wasn't something to worry about, I'm not sure why people are.

Did anyone ask them why this isnt MP online?

People keep asking this, and I have to ask: are there any precision platformers that have online co-op? Did the PS3 and 360 versions of Rayman have online? My knowledge of the PC scene is pretty good and I don't think I know of any there. I've heard good arguments put forth about how even minor lag is a much larger problem in platformers than it is in other genres, and they sound reasonable, but I don't actually know if there's a dev that has disproven them.
