Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

Maybe the Toad can change colors if he's alone.

I imagine the only reason they are using Buckenberry in the first place is because he's blue and they don't want color confusion.

So what's the likely story here? How come Peach didn't get kidnapped? Where's Yellow Toad?

Is the Red Toad the same Toad that's always Toad in Mario Kart, or is it a different Red Toad, since there seem to be so many Red Toads?

Is this the same Blue Toad from Super Mario Bros. 2? The same Blue Toad from NSMBWii? NSMBU?

Lol, I think the most logical guess is that Wart is the main boss and there isn't a "save the princess" story. Maybe no Bowser? Or you're saving bowser? Or it's all a dream?

I hope Birdo is in the game.

I was first very disappointed when this game first appeared, but now that I'm over that it looks like a very fun title to play.

Gonna go through the whole game as Luigi first. =)

I consider 1-1 in Super Mario 3D Land to be a work of art. (The link is to my thread on the subject)

1-1 in 3D Land was essentially a playground, brimming with interactive bits and bobs, and PACKED with secrets. To me, it stands as one of the finest introductions to a game ever.

What's great about 3D World is I see multiple levels on display here echoing the design ethos of 3D Land's first level, with secrets packed into every nook and cranny, lots of unique traversal opportunities, and just loads of stuff to run over, leap on and off, etc. The clear tubes, the rolling wheels, the climbable blocks, the invisible blocks found with the GamePad, etc. It just looks exquisitely interactive, practically begging the player to come at it from every angle -- above and beyond the edge of the screen here, over this block and behind this wall there. I love it.

Also, I lost my shit nerding out over the return of Charging Chuck. Yes. Yes! YES!!

That is a great write up. And hell yes to charging chuck. It's a shame 3d Mario fans on here won't be able to play together online. Luckily for me, other than sports games, Mario galaxy was like the most popular game among my friends, many of which almost never game. I'm sure they'll be just as down for this.

even though it's demo'd here, has it been confirmed that you can go through the single player campaign as either peach, toad or luigi?

Yes. In the developer direct they mention it.

BTW, has anybody found any other single player videos of the game? If so, I would like to see them. The more I watch that Peach video, the more I like it.

I looked yesterday and all I could find were multiplayer demos, except for that one video.

Something about this game -- and Mario Kart 8, too -- gives me a really strong arcade vibe. I think it's the solid, colorful environments, smooth 60 fps action, and that wild kind of multiplayer where wacky stuff is always happening. I love it. I feel like if the arcades of the 80s had survived, I'd be able to walk into one today and see something like Peach, Toad, Mario, and Luigi running around crazy like this.

These feels.

I know them.

Peach is easy mode.

Maybe if I just play as Toad and pretend this is the first ever 3D Toad platformer, I can overlook my disappointment of this game in the lineage of 3D Mario games and simply enjoy it for what looks to be fun from the videos.

+1 for blue sky games.

IGN had a couple, as does GameXplain. I don't have the links right now but do a YouTube search. It's kinda random though, some of theirs are multiplayer also.

My impression of this is that it's some kind of custom level or some kind of minigame where you use the touchscreen. That's not just a red toad, that's the leader of the Toad Brigade; see the headlamp.

Only way to play SMB2:

- Peach for the handful of levels that can be broken with float jump short-cuts.
- Toad for everything else. The less time wasted on digging through sand, the better.

That the Toad in SMB2 might actually retroactively be a generic (or specific?) blue Toad instead of it just being NES color limitations and SMB2 Toad being the Toad makes my head hurt. Remind me what the relationship between Bowser and the Koopalings is at this point?

I am really sick of the "collect 3 stars" mechanic in the recent Mario games. It makes playing levels not nearly as fun because you're spending most of them time trying to make sure you didn't miss one of the stars.

Yeah I'd personally prefer the equivalent of DK coins in DKC2. Or comet medals in G2 come to think of it. There was only 1 per level. I think green stars could work better in this game though, if you have different paths in the levels leading to stars like in M64. But here you can keep on playing after.

Oh man. What if the game had a level creator and you could share levels online?

That'd be an incredible stretch but I could see simpler levels happening.

It's probably a little mini stage you warp to in order to collect something.

Really? It's one of the things I really liked about NSMB series, gave you a reason to go back to replay levels if you missed them and It was fun hunting them down. That and they are totally optional so there really isn't much pressure to get them if you don't want to.

Edit: well I suppose you do need them for those unlockable world 9 levels.

Unless it's a Ghost House.

To hell with that.

Really? I find that they add extremely enjoyable challenge and exploration to the levels.

Yeah, but you're playing as or helping the Toad Brigade Leader.

i'm not bothered (on the contrary), but it's a mechanic as old as MarioWorld at the very least.

And it's nowhere near as difficult as Yoshi's story (the 30 melons, THAT was a challenge, especially since some of them can come from minigames, and you have to avoid other fruits)

The more videos I watch of Mario World and of Kart 8, the more I am convinced that World was originally planned as a 3DS game. Although I do think the game looks sharp and beautiful (especially the lighting on the clear pipes and the purple ceramic curved edge rails, and the trees), the detail is sort of lacking relative to the detail in Kart. In some instances Kart seems powers greater.

If I were to bet money, Mario World is a stopgap title in the franchise; I think Wii U will have a second Mario in the relatively near future. And, IIRC, 3D Lands design was to accommodate the technical prowess of the 3DS, whereby constrained and focus level design was adopted in lieu of the much larger scope of say, Sunshine. Since the Wii U does not have the limitations of the 3DS, why use a similar design? Why not increase the scope?

Again this is speculation, but things at Nintendo have not seem to be adding up lately and I just can't stop asking myself why.

Being obligated to meticulously search every nook and cranny in order to unlock every stage can definitely get old.

I'd rather have to do this and get rewarded instead of getting everything handed to me instantly at the beginning with no reward for finding everything.

some developers would probably kill for GAF Studios's patented 3DS-to-Wii U port tech, where you press a button and your 3DS game magically becomes HD.

The design in 3D Land works. It's the most approachable 3D Mario has ever been, for people of all skill levels. It's always clear where to go and how to get there. 3D Mario has long been becoming more and more linear. This is just the natural progression of things. If anything, I suspect subsequent 3D Mario titles will be more like 3D World, and less like the Galaxies and Sunshine.

Probly not in the near future.

Imagine, within 1 year of the Wii U's release we will have:
Super Mario 3D World
New Super Mario Bros U
New Super Luigi U
Zelda Wind Waker HD
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze

for a gaming console that isn't selling as well as it should, thats a pretty impressive Nintendo lineup with hard hitting titles coming pretty fast.
