Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

In retrospect, I'm glad they are exploring the 3D Land gameplay. There was a lot left to be desired that didn't seem possible on the 3DS (bigger levels being the biggest one). This seems to be in between 3D Land and Galaxy (closer to 3D Land) in terms of level design.

Also, I don't think there will be anything like the SMW world map, and I really hope there isn't. I hope for something like Galaxy 2 where there is a mini-hub kinda world to do random stuff in and still easily choose the levels you want to play.

I should have never taken the rumors from that 1000 year old guy (or whatever his name was) seriously.

Pre-E3, when rumors spread of an open world playground for a Mario game, I thought it was bullocks, but a part of me was excited.
Which is probably why I was hoping for a high res Mario in a SM64/Sunshine style game, not a multiplayer iteration of 3D Land. I've come to terms with this game. I'm not even angry.

It actually looks fun.

So, I'm okay with this for 2013.

***BUT***

This cannot be their big Mario game for Wii U.

We need something a little closer to Sunshine or Galaxy, on a much larger scale. Nintendo needs to use Mario as the franchise that proves Wii U can be next-gen and not just 360/ PS3 gen with a tablet controller.

A naming and shaming thread of all the pre E3 liars would be fun.

I'm pretty with you there. I think they started a bit and then realized they would never be finished anytime soon with such a large scale project. And since the Wii U needs more games to push the system, they decided for this intermediate game.

But this IS like Galaxy on a much larger scale. It just doesn't have the gravity mechanic. The full resolution footage on the eShop shows that the game's visuals go beyond PS3.

All these tinfoil hats are amusing. This existed before Wii U sales were known. This is the next mainline 3D Mario game that Nintendo is making with their 3D Mario team (EAD Tokyo 2). There is no other project, that's just wishful thinking.

Another thing I don't understand, how the hell are Galaxy and Sunshine being put together as if they were close to each other? This game seems really close to Galaxy outside of those few smaller, albeit open-ish world levels.

EAD Tokyo 2 has an amazing track record, they're going to make an amazing game.

this right here. 3D World, just like DKCRTF, maybe lacks the immediate wow factor and that's what differentiates it from the Galaxys, but I have no doubt it will be an amazing game, even exceeding expectations. We have basically see nothing yet but you can tell there's already a lot of new ideas in those small gameplay videos

Which in turned was a "hacked" version of the Japanese Mario 1 Mario pose:

And unless my memory is way off, this one was hand drawn by Miyamoto himself.

I saw that video too and kind of thought to myself "what secrets"?

Some extra coins and lives? Kind of underwhelming.

I'm playing through 3d land again and there's tons of secrets. If this game is equal to it in terms of quality ill be very happy. You guys jump to conclusion to quick from demos and not the final product. EAD will not let us down!

I'm sure at this early stage of the game they're just trying to teach new players there are rewards for exploring.

Also think back to Bob-omb Battlefield; it looked no bigger or exploration based than this level, merely littered with a few trees, 1-ups and a perplexing Thwomp cage. And a linear mountain path.

I loved 3D Land when it came to 3DS although I'm not sure if this was the game Wii U needed, at least as the first flagship Mario. Glad they dropped Peach always having to be rescued mechanic and made her playable this time.

On the visual front though, it's nothing too special. It really seems like bigger versions of the original 3D Land with obvious better textures and shaders put on them. Probably nothing too taxing.

He didn't fall down below the 3 spinning platforms where there is a secret. Besides, this is one of the more basic levels.

And he only found 1 of the 3 green stars.

Check the videos on Wii U. It looks impressive. The swaying grass is really striking.

With the Tanooki suit back and all, anyone else think that this may have been a subtle tease to this game? The Blue Toad is also there.

UGH there's a level timer?

Fuck, I hate that shit. Gives me no time to explore.

I don't like the idea of timers in 3D Mario either. But timer starts off 500 which is over 8 minutes. So, I don't think it will be too much of a problem when playing the game.

Nintendo said they like idea of people competing in order to complete the levels as fast as possible. That's fine enough, but I'd rather want the worlds to be detailed with a lot of secrets, ratherthan be designed to cater speed runners. All in all, my biggest fear for 3D World at the moment is its multiplayer focus. With local multiplayer only, I will most likely end up playing the game on my own.

What I don't understand with statements like this is that Galaxy is basically just as linear as this game is. Mario 64 and Sunshine allowed real exploration, even though the game world wasn't really that big, but still. Galaxy is just a 3D version of old school 2D platforming, no exploration, just linear path after linear path. But that's not to say it wasn't great, because it was. But that's also confusing, because it just shows that linear 3D Mario game works just like 3D World will work.
People saying stuff like this I think, only complain about the actual graphics of 3D World, not the gameplay, because honestly it isn't that different from Galaxy.

Timer, game not optimized around an analog stick, the presence of a run/button... Galaxy had none of those aspects to it.

They're his henchmen. Nothing more, nothing less.

Well, technically, that's what Miyamoto said was the "current story".

Considering even the modern games still have the Koopalings act as if they are Bowser's kin, and most regular people still think they are? I think it's only a matter of time until Miyamoto or someone else changes their mind again (or they just wait until he retires).

But speaking of which, are they even actually in this game? It's fine if they're not, I'm just hoping we don't have to be stuck with Boom Boom and/or Pam Pam an infinite amount of times between battles with Bowser and/or "Big Monsters"

He was directly responding to someone who said that Galaxy was an open-world game, which it is not. Those aspects you listed have nothing to do with that, unless you consider them the three things which make a game "open-world."

What other kinds of secrets are there in other Mario games? Alternative exits/stars? This game may very well have that too. Mario games were never some collectathon platformers in the first place.

There's no chance in hell this is the next true 3D Mario game. 8 directional movement with a dpad? Don't make me laugh. For me, that's the biggest giveaway.

My guess is that they needed something to bring out in the shorter term and games like the next true 3D Mario were taking longer to develop than anticipated. Even Mario Kart is a 2014 game, so when you think of it like that, there's no way a proper HD 3D Mario sequel could have been ready for 2013.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Mario whore and I think 3D World will be really good but I don't for one second consider it in the same game line/series as Mario 64, Sunshine or Galaxy 1/2.

Given the team and time frame involved, you may have disappointment in your future. Until any evidence to the contrary surfaces this is it.

Shit.. it was in the trailer? I saw that trailer like thousands of times and didn't notice the Tanooki suit lol
I need to pay more attention to details like this
So far how many powerups are out there?
- Cat
- Fire
- Frog
- Tanooki

Wait all these power ups are confirmed?!? HYPE!!

Im pretty sure they will eventualy do a "classic N64/GC/Wii" console mario game, but this feels different and fresh to me... but then i wanted more levels when i finished 3D land.

If you take away the gravity mechanic, that is on a completely different (downward) level compared to the 3D World demo. Of course the gravity mechanic is amazing, and I could play Galaxy level packs until the day I die, but I don't think that Nintendo was going to keep going in that direction no matter what.

Anyway, 3D World is going to give me what I've been craving ever since the timer ran out on my flying cap in Bob-omb Battlefield so many years ago: power-ups in a 3D Mario that you can keep without restrictions. It was such a tease when you got the fire flower in Galaxy and it was only used to basically solve a puzzle in the room you get it in.

What dev team do you propose is making this hypothetical true 3D Mario? This has got the 3D Land/ Galaxy/ Galaxy 2 team making it.

Well, in 3D World's defense, without the boss battle, the Mario Galaxy demo is boring as well and it doesn't capture the essence of the game.
Same could happen to 3D World... boring demo to don't spoil anything... mind blowing full game.

Galaxy's demo was a single level which got heavily tweaked and recut, presented a year and a half before the game came out. The 3D World levels are taken from throughout the game, a game which is presumably far closer to completion than Galaxy was in 2006. It's going to be far more representative of the final game than the Galaxy demo was.

The 2007 E3 demo was far more representative of the final Galaxy product, and is a better comparison.

Does anyone else miss when the art had red overalls with a blue shirt? And Luigi was green overalls? Like in the Super Show. I went as normal blue overall Luigi last Halloween because you can't really find overalls anymore and they only come in blue jean. But if I could have, I would have totally gone for the Danny Wells Luigi look.

Even in the cartoon of the time they were colored overalls with a blue shirt. Nintendo didn't know how to officially colorize their own mascot for years.

Reading through the last page I see there was confusion as to why they chose the blue Toad instead of red. While red Toad is definitely my bro, I think the answer is as simple as this: each player is a color, and you can't have two red bars filling up at the end of each level. Red, Green, Pink, and Blue.

Also, red Toad is the Captain of the Toad Brigade! \o/
