I died.
curse you for bringing that typo to my attention
I guess I'm a little further in. In that DS game you mentioned, there are multiple characters who call themselves Heracles: it's a mystery from the start as to who is the real Heracles. Later on, you find out thatthe fourth hero, the big guy who goes simply by 'Heracles', is actually Iphicles. He's the mortal half-brother of Heracles. Iphicles turns out to be dead already, fading away when his memories return. This breaks Heracles out of his depression and has him join the party as a replacement. He summons a pegasus-drawn cart: probably his mode of transport in earlier games.
So, if that series as a whole is to be represented, I think it would be by its main recurring character.
Anyway! You know what series totally should have been on Wii and deserves a stage or character or something?

Sakurai made similar comments about Brawl and given Sakurai's love for throwing in tons of content, I could see him add 10-15 characters. He also made that comment and then anounced that the handheld game and console game would have completely different stages.I can't see there being anymore than 6 new characters for a total of 41. Sakurai's said he wants to focus on updating and changing whats already there as opposed to adding a whole bunch of new shit. Plus you have to take into account the fact that they want this game out by 2014, and it's a dual release for both 3ds and Wii U. If there's more than 6 I will be overjoyed but I really don't see it happening at this point.

It's definitely that too.
Sakurai just knows the Smash fanbase and tries to avoid setting their expectations for characters so high that they crash and burn.
I think sakurai will go towards 50 so 15 more.

Probably been posted but just in case.
This is what I believe too.

Shulk is an unlikely addition. He has one game, and it's a one-off. He also would not have an interesting moveset. Nothing he does in Xenoblade translates well to a fighting game aside from his buster sword attacks.

Decided to refine my original roster guess a bit going off how I feel the roster's shaping up now we've gotten a proper look at the game. Doubt it'd be 100% correct, but after finally getting some time to play a decent amount into FE:Awakening I honestly do just see Sakurai replacing Ike with Chrom (I'd love to be wrong), appeasing people who want Mewtwo back by using his new X/Y form to also represent the new games, some sort of new Mario character (just mentally replace that empty space under Bowser with whoever) and resurrecting his axed Toon Zelda/Toon Sheik* idea to tie into WWHD and save a bit on development time (assuming anything had been started on them in Brawl). I'm a bit torn on whether Snake will stay, but ultimately due to his popularity in Brawl and the issue of having a completely original moveset being cut from Brawl to SSB4 with nobody to replace it with I'm siding with him making the jump to SSB4. Goroh's inclusion is complete wish-fulfillment but damn it F-Zero deserves a 2nd rep at this point.
*Still reckon this was supposed to be Tetra
Likely to be two games, though. (X for Wii U) Xenoblade is clearly a franchise now.
Speaking of Wii RPG's, I wonder if The Last Story or Pandora's Tower will have any representation in this?

That's also me leaning more towards what I personally want, though to be fair he was fairly requested during Brawl's development and for SSB4 many online character polls like Smashboard's and a few Japanese ones SmashGAF member Snakey made he was the most requested newcomer after Mega Man and Mewtwo/Roy returning. IMO it comes down to whether they go with what's more relevant and what they already partially developed, or what has more fan demand. I'd prefer the latter, but can live with the former.I see Dixie Kong getting in before K. Rool. The Kremlings seem like a chapter Nintendo is trying to erase, whereas Dixie is in DKC:TF, Diddy Kong Racing DS, and was one of the unfinished Brawl Brawl characters.
X is unlikely to be a Xenoblade sequel. There are other games in the Xeno series, though.
Fire Emblem doesn't really have direct sequels either, so with Melee and Brawl, Sakurai made sure just to include the latest main character. Since MonolithSoft is now a first party and presumably going to be continually releasing new RPGs that start with 'X', I could see him doing the same thing. Just including the latest protagonist.

I'd personally hope for that, but I'm simply going off the 6 or so hours I've gotten into FE:A so far where sword-wise Chrom seems very similar to Ike in quite a few ways. They could always integrate the pair-up system to differentiate him from the previous FE vets though.Seeing as how FE:A was such a huge success, I'd be surprised if they cut Ike or Marth to add in Chrom. I'm expecting a three-rep situation.
That's honestly the lowest possible number I see us getting. Mega Man's in, Pac-Man was leaked, Sonic's a given and Snake's the only character up in the air, yet like I said cutting him would be cutting a wholly original moveset with nobody to replace it with. They did that before with Mewtwo (though he really does seem like he was supposed to be in Brawl, at least moreso than the other cut characters still on the disc) though, so there *is* a precedent. Before it comes up, I don't think MGSV not coming to the Wii U really factors in one way or the other; Snake had just as little to do with Nintendo when he was in Brawl, and part of his content even directly advertises MGS4, a PS3-exclusive.There's no way we're getting 4 3rd parties.

Most of his sword arts and monado arts don't have a purpose in a game like Smash. Most of them have status effects or positional benefits that don't translate. Moves like Armor would also not translate well. Like I said, you would basically have his buster sword attacks. It's pathetically easy to translate Shulk's moveset from Xenoblade into smash. His B moves can be comprised of his monado arts, and his smashes / normals can use based on his sword arts.
As for your first comment, it's subjective but I think his moveset is incredibly interesting.
Why not?
What is he in the illuminati now!?
I'd love either Daisy or Rosalina, with a preference to the former.
If they have three blue haired swordsmen in this game I'm gonna end someone. We need more axes.

Sakurai said recently that Megaman is a "special case" and not to expect 3rd party characters to be a common thing. Him saying that actually kind of dumbed down my hopes for Snake or Sonic returning.![]()
Unedited, posted a day before the Direct.Hang on...when did this happen?
I'm seriously just expecting two.
Ike is gone. They cut Roy for Ike. They'll cut Ike for Chrom.
And Pac-Man never leaked. People just assume it since Namco is making the game and the Galaga ship wouldn't make sense.

Guy explains what's up here. While obviously things can change (like those last three characters obviously not showing up at E3), guessing a character who up until now was never even considered a character (Wii Fit Trainer) to the point where even Smashboards didn't have her as a character choice in their roster maker despite having upwards a 1,000 different choices is way too specific to be just pure luck. The way Nintendo cut up each character's trailers into different videos on their Direct youtube page makes me think it was easy for them to splice in and out different characters they saw fit before their E3 show, hence why we didn't see those last three.
