Major Nelson alludes to Xbox One games being playable long term

They asked him about the concerns many of us have about the long term viability of our game library.

I’ll just say this: We haven’t even started this generation, so it’s kind of early to talk about the end of the generation. That’s certainly something we would not do. That’s not the way the system is designed. It’s designed for flexibility. But let’s get the system out there first.

While its not quite official confirmation, it's good to know they're aware and will look into allowing us to use this thing well past its end cycle.

This was my only concern about the console, so its good to know it most likely won't be an issue.

lock if old. Search from phone wasn't great. Posting from phone so hopefully thread is ok.

Surely even Kotaku would call him on such a bullshit response? (not clicking)

They'll probably release a software update for the Bone to allow it to run games without the authentication when/if they decide to shutdown the servers.

Let's not delude ourselves. Regardless of what justification you use for the always-online DRM, one thing is clear; it will be rather meaningless come 10+ years from now. Or, at the very least, the value of disabling it to allow the Xbox One library to work will far outweigh keeping the authentication in place.

Microsoft will almost certainly remove this restriction/feature when the time comes.

That was a pretty stock answer that didn't allude to anything one way or another IMO.

But his answer was appropriate. Way too early to say or tell when server shutdown is probably 10+ years off at minimum.

TBH, it is a stretch to think that someday Microsoft would deny you access to play your games.
In the very far future, I can see them possibly shutting down access to download games, but I would expect an announcement beforehand so that you could store them on hard drives first.
And at that point they'd either keep the authentication servers alive, or remove that functionality completely.

It's never too early to talk about shit like this (being able to play the games you bought on your console in the future), and he can't even give a straight yes or no answer.

It's "not something" they would do? Well I don't know if I trust them on that, so that answer means nothing.

If the games are good enough it will be cracked and later on emulated. If im not mistaken they already started working on ps3 emulator with working homescreen.

Games iso can be saved on external hdd you are allowed to use. Or will be archived in torrents or newsgroup communities.

The question is do you feel guilty pirating a game you actually bought. Maybe this is a mental gymnastic stunt but yeah hackers will find a way. And with the console being x86 all they really need is emulate the OS.

..Claims system is designed with flexibility in mind....

Yet is the most inflexible machine in ages.

...Not seeing that, not seeing how this is even anything remotely tied to the long term lifespan of software.

I'm not buying a system that gives me no definite policy on how my content will be handled once the system is an obsolete business for them.

I saw him say "We haven't started this generation yet." twice now. Alright, that is totally irrelevant. You're asking people to make an investment in the platform, some assurance would be nice.

Your "we'll see when we get there" is not at all helpful.

Well as I said in the OP, its no confirmation. But his answer leans more on the ok side than the "god dammit" side.

Alludes was the first word that came to mind.

Seriously, put it in your Terms of Service that service will continue to be provided to all games until either 1.) Games no longer require authorization 2.) Another option is provided to play what you purchased.

He literally says, "That's certainly something we would not do". Seems clear.

Sarcasm? He's referring to talking about the end of the generation too soon with that quote.

EDIT: After reading it again, it might be referring to playing your games indeed. So I might be wrong.

You expect him to say you won't have access after they shutdown the servers? These guys are trying to sell a console after all. They legally have no responsibility to support these games after they deem it no longer economical.

Well, they had no problem shutting down every single Live component of the original Xbox once it became a burden so I can definitely see them doing the same to this one.

Well, they did it once...

http://arstechnica.com/information-...s-redux-microsoft-to-nuke-msn-music-drm-keys/

Customers who have purchased music from Microsoft's now-defunct MSN Music store are now facing a decision they never anticipated making: commit to which computers (and OS) they want to authorize forever, or give up access to the music they paid for. Why? Because Microsoft has decided that it's done supporting the service and will be turning off the MSN Music license servers by the end of this summer.

Why support an infrastructure forever, if you can resell games as "classic games".

We all know that they have the ability to killswitch it so its the least of my concerns.
They will do like they did with their music and lock it down to the device or hell maybe the gamertag.

Major Nelson also said MS was listening.

He's a PR figure. Nothing more, nothing less.

Take anything he says with a grain of salt.
