Metal Gear Solid V (PS3/360/PS4/XBO/Maybe PC) - Extended 9 minute E3 trailer

not sure if this has been discussed yet but i figured i'd weigh in.

i'm in the camp of people who believe that the guy who "wakes up" from a coma is not big boss. when big boss went into a coma, he didn't have the shrapnel in his skull, but you can clearly see a bump underneath the bandages of the guy running around in the hospital demo right where the shrapnel should be (right side of his forehead). i don't know about all the other crazy conspiracies, but this was enough to make me a believer.

As for David Hayter, all I'll say is that the Big Boss (sans horn) has never spoken in english in any trailer, and when he spoke in japanese, he had the same voice he always had. i know kojima gave his reasons why the japanese voice was kept the same, but i'm gonna go ahead and call chemtrails on that shit.

Reminds me of that arnold schwarzenegger movie where you find out he's the clone the whole time. Then they mind fuck you again at the end of the movie. Wouldn't surprise me Kojima is doing something similar.

i kind of don't think it's gonna be the sort of secret that they reveal at the end of the game. i think it's just gonna be a big secret about the game's promotion. once the game actually puts all these weird incongruities in front of the player, i don't see how it can be kept a secret. the weird horn thing and the missing arm just don't make sense if this is really big boss.

it would be like if they tried to make you think that Raiden really was Snake in MGS2.

the weird horn thing and the missing arm just don't make sense if this is really big boss.
Not really a problem: we've barely seen the old Big Boss in the previous games, after all.
(same thing as for Kaz and his missing limbs, basically)

it would be like if they tried to make you think that Raiden really was Snake in MGS2.
That's an odd comparison to make considering Raiden sounded and looked different.
Here, Punished Snake both sounds and looks like Big Boss, and other characters seem to treat him as if he were as well. In all likelihood, even he believes he is Big Boss.
Hardly the same thing, and definitely not a secret that would be outed within a mere few minutes.

what i mean is that big boss didn't have the the horn when he went into a coma but you can see it when he wakes up. they won't really be able to keep that a secret when the game comes out.

so i'd argue that punished snake neither looks nor sounds like big boss ;)

The hint is there, but it's not obvious. You pretty much need to know what to look for and to pause the cutscene.

right, that's the case now that we're in the promotional stage of the game.

but when he takes the bandage off and suddenly big boss has a fucking horn on his head, they're gonna have to address that, right?

i also wanna see if big boss really lost his arm when he went in a coma. you can't see it from the angle in the trailer.

Kojima: As you can see in this trailer for MGS6, the character of Solidus Snake appears as a younger man. As you can see, both of his eyes have been gouged out and all of limbs severed and replaced with robot limbs.

"kojima that's not how he was in mgs2 years later."

Kojima: Yes, but you never actually saw him outside of his exoskeleton.

"kojima, solidus was the president of the united states, why would nobody notice or mention this"

Kojima: Moving on, here we see Otacon's dad building Metal Gear TX-55 in Outer Heaven.

"that was dr. madnar who built Metal Gear"

Kojima: What?

"dr. madnar. he was in the msx games. he died in zanzibar. snake shot him with a rocket."

Kojima: No, no, Madnar was mentioned in MGS4. He was still alive.

"yes both of those things are unfortunately true"

This is sad but true. It seems Kojima needs some Lore Expert to keep him within canon.

For those of us who overanalyze every little detail of the trailers and such.

when he takes the bandage off and suddenly big boss has a fucking horn on his head, they're gonna have to address that, right?
Sure: "a piece of shrapnel from whatever explosion caused his coma".
Again, unless you were paying close attention to (the real) Big Boss's forehead before that (and the regular player would have had no reason to, at that point), it would fly...

i also wanna see if big boss really lost his arm when he went in a coma. you can't see it from the angle in the trailer.
I'm going to bet he didn't, and the missing arm is an injury that's specific to the third man / whoever Punished Snake really is (just like the piece of shrapnel).

Then again, if he really cared about that sort of things, he wouldn't have been writing all kinds of crazy twists just for shits and giggles ever since the beginning of the series...

I am pretty sure we won't play Big Boss in the Phantom Pain section, (we will play him only in Ground Zeroes). We will play this "what about him" character (read my previous comments). You know it is KOJIMA, you expect the opposite of what seems obvious !

Quiet seems to be inspired from Michelle Rodriguez (Resident Evil, Macheté, Swat...), don't you think ?!

No she's based off another real person, few photos a few pages back!

It was modeled after a dutch model, so it looks just like that dutch model.

Metal-Gear-Solid-V-Quiet-Actress.jpg

Actually, I'm pretty sure I remember Kojima mentioning Michelle Rodriguez's name in his latest podcast, when talking about the inspiration for Quiet. As in, the type of character and looks he was looking for.

Not sure. It won't be based on pressure sensitive though as it's cross gen and out of 4+ platforms only the PS3 supports it aside from L2/R2.

Perhaps what I should have said is there is a prone/dive button which is seperate from a crouch/stand toggle button. The tap to stand up/ hold to lie down was never very nice so a change would be welcome.

I would guess it's a middle ground between MGS4 and Peace Walker's controls. Hold X to go from standing to crawling and back again, tap it to go from standing to crouching and back again (or crawling to crouching). That leaves no room for rolling/jumping with the X button, so perhaps it's one of the Triangle button context-sensitive actions. I'll be really interested to see how it all turns out, because it also seems like you can sprint in this game, and I'm guessing there'll be new CQC moves, too.

We will miss the pressure sensitive button on DS4 ! MGS HD colletion was a pain to play on PS Vita ! Thanks multiplatformism for forcing even Sony to change a very good feature.

I sure won't. Well, I did like the pressure-sensitive leaning and tippy-toes when aiming, but eeeeeeaaaaasing that Square button out every time I want to put away a gun without firing it can stay dead in the cold ground where it belongs.

Yes I remember that being hard, but doings so with Down button on PS Vita D-Pad wasn't a better solution, we even lost the stalking stance in MGS3 !

In regards to people who keep trying to make creative excuses for Quiet's outfit, Kojima has already admitted that its going to be her outfit for the whole game. He talked about it on his Japanese podcast (see below).

Nope, sorry to disappoint but Kojima said that she will be wearing that as her main outfit during the game, but that there's a reason for that. My bet? Her skin has octo-camo so she needs to be naked to use it.

And yeah she speaks Japanese fluently, she was on Kojima's podcast talking about 3D capture and stuff (that pic with all the cameras). Won't hear her voice in the game though, since her character can't talk.

The way he explained it in the podcast made it sound like that's not the case. He said he knows people are gonna ask why is a sniper naked, that would only make her more visible in the desert. And he said that there's a reason why she does that, but he can't tell yet. And I think the black paint around her eyes disappearing is a hint of what her secret ability is.

As if his 'reason' for her outfit is going to be anything other than an ad-hoc rationalization. He can make her power work however he wants, but big surprise this one is going to require her to be naked. Whoops, sorry, not completely naked obviously, she can still wear a bikini and ripped nylons. Why can her legs be covered by nylons but her chest can't be covered by a tank top or shirt? Why don't actual pants or combat fatigues work but nylons do? Oh but I shouldn't complain, surely there's going to be a well-reasoned explanation forthcoming, there's no way Kojima simply wanted the female sniper's design to be sexually gratuitous, he's never done something like that before...

Side note, even if Kojima hadn't already admitted it, the history of the production process makes it pretty clear it was always the plan. This fan site post talks about how Quiet was created (sourced from Kojima's twitter posts/pictures).

“Making of Quiet in MGSV. Done 3D capture shooting on both face w / & w / O make UPS, body, & Arms & legs separately.” “We did Also 3D capture Miss Stephanie, the Actor for Quiet in MGSV, both her face and body.”

But she was one of the few who got that full-body treatment, this fan site post, commenting on this English production podcast, said "Quiet is one of the new characters who had a full 3D scan. So body and face were completely recorded, unlike characters like Snake and Kaz." It's pretty obvious why this dichotomy exists for the body scan; they're not going to spend all that money on tech and full body scanning if Quiet's only going to lose her normal clothes for a few scenes.

Also of note is that those earlier pictures (2012) of her in full combat uniform was while Kojima was testing out full body capture tech to see if he wanted to build one for his studio.

“Stephanie with a gun. Testing This was only but was good reason to build Our Own 3D Studio cap.”

And then finally, from that same round of tests in 2012 is this picture of Stephanie in a bikini. Why would they even need to 'test' for that unless they were already planning on that being her outfit, which they were, and which Kojima has already admitted anyway.

Just like Beauty & The Beast and Paz, Kojima is just horny.

That military outfit would have been awesome for Quiet. A female sniper that isn't sexualized in a video game would have been a nice change. Now she's just another video game girl.

Should have learned something from The Boss (and no don't mention the final suit-unzip part).

I have an idea that Quiets design might have been adapted from an earlier rough sketches of both the Boss and Eva. The Flaming figure of "those who don't exist" might be inspired by another unused element of MGS3, an unpublished character "number 7", a character with a spiked head, wreathed in flames. There are also number 2, 3, 8 and 9. I wonder if some of them will show up (though they are quite bizarre, even for MGS).

The power armor zombies are most likely inspired at least a bit by additional rough sketches of Raiden/Frogs in MGS4. Shinkawa likes to go back to early work (as an example; the main ZOE designs were basically all derived from designs he worked on while still attending school)

Now about that game with The Boss as the protag...

I'm over Naked Snake whining and 'acting out' over her death.

Oh god yes, Kojima going absolutely bonkers with the Nazis/rest of the Axis powers during WW2 with Boss and her unit fighting in it? I need it in my fucking veins, while there's been tons of insane concepts with them in every form of media he'd probably push it over the roof haha.

Basically take Wolfenstein, "MGS-ize" it to the next level and we're good to go.

This coming from a dedicated Captain America comics reader who's read Cap fighting Nazi superhumans, vampires, werewolves, zombies, robots, monsters, etc...

Be careful what you wish for, guys. A game starring The Boss is going to mean learning that she was best friends with Otacon's grandfather who made clockwork Metal Gears, the Philosophers will be known by three different names, all references to cult classic movies from the '70s, and their top agent will be The Sorrow's Dad. And the main villain will be the character who trained The Boss, and everyone's going to think he or she is so badass that they'll be clamouring for a game about him/her, and before you know it the MG timeline will just be filled with alternating Snakes and Bosses as far as the eye can see in either direction.

In metal gear solid 7: return of the teacher. you play as boss, and your mentor, king boss teaches everything you know. after he dies, you find a student to teach in his image.

in metal gear solid 11:witchdoctor you play as king boss, as king boss, your mentor, god boss, teaches everything you know but his death deeply haunts you and makes you into the person you know. you soon find out that theres a group, only known as 'the government' are in charge of the country that you know and controls everything behind the scenes. king boss invents innvotive military tactics such as 'killing'.

in metal gear solid 14, you play as solid snake, and he has to unravel a mystery of how liquid and solidus, inspired by big boss, inspired by the boss, inspired by king boss, inspired by god boss tried to take down this 'the patriots' , 'cipher', 'la-le-li-lo', 'the government' by believing that soldiers should find a place where they are always needed. but it turns out that the bad guys were actually the good guys. at the end, solid snake becauses snake boss.

edit: matrix cat stole my post/

I noticed that Quiets Sniper Rifle looks a lot like the British Accuracy International AWM. Maybe she's a SAS operative?

I did some research, but I can't find any evidence of the SAS using hot women in bikinis. The lack of evidence is evidence that they're trying to hide their secret weapon. So I guess you are correct, she's from the SAS.

Wow did anyone think about about this possibility?
http://www.geimaku.com/17/06/2013/yet-another-conspiracy-theory-for-metal-gear-solid-v-and-hayter/

Decoy Octopus, I mean the character didn't have any honorable presence in the entire series(except well in MGS4 with his female inspired Laughing Octopus). This is, if true, the most plausible supposition to justify the new character (who is in NO WAY BIG BOSS)

Too much of a streatch. I don't see that happening.

I'd sooner expect either:

1. Hayter is playing Snake who makes a cameo either at the beginning or end of the game (this whole time Smakes been watching a VR simulation record of BB in MGS3, PO, PW, and PP the whole time). Game over scene probably has Hayter yelling "Boss? Bossss!" which would be funny. Ishmael is probably just BB's subconscious and what Kijima meant by "Who you saw is not who you think he is" or something.

Or

2. Hayter is playing another role entirely, like Code Taker or Skull Face (who is probably played by Steve Blum).

http://www.famitsu.com/news/201306/18035135.html

Here are some Japanese interviews with Kojima.. no idea if there's any new info though.

I read the Famitsu interview earlier. There are some details which haven't been mentioned before, but the larger points are the same.

Kojima on the story of MGSV:
He says that while previous MGS stories were presented like movies, with the entire game being one continuous story, MGSV is more like a TV series. Each mission can be considered an episode, and as such depending on the type of episode, it could have varying amounts of focus on the main story. Some could be used to flesh out certain characters while not being directly related to the larger plot, while some could be used to develop and tease mysteries connected to the larger plot, and so on.

Kojima on the online features of MGSV:
He gave a very different example of the online and open world nature of MGSV in this interview. He says that the online component isn't really just going to be limited to competitive or co-op multiplayer, but there can also be user-generated challenges in the single player game. For example, if a player is travelling from point A to point B on the map during a mission and he's on a horse, if he feels like it he can challenge other players via social networking services to a race to make it more interesting. Players who are unable to participate in the race at that specific time can still serve as spectators to that race via their tablets/smartphones.

Haven't seen the 4Gamer interview yet, I'll read it now. Oh, and he confirms that the year 1984 is selected for two reasons. One is that MGS3->PW->MGSV have 10 year breaks between each game (1964->1974->1984), but it is also a direct reference to the Orwell novel of the same name. There will be story themes connected to that as well.

Edit: Read the 4Gamer interview. I think both were probably conducted in a roundtable session or something, because the questions seem mostly the same, and the answers were similar too.

Are you saying you don't see the horn or are you saying it's not clear that it's there?

Because the horn is there.

I don't see any horn either. I see hair.

IMO that seems like something that would not fit MG at all.

I'd prefer it if they did something more creative, maybe something similar to Demon's/Dark Souls. Well, not exactly like DS, but at least something creative and something that fits into the MG universe.

Hummm, considering the wackiness of the MG universe that could actually be anything:

Controlling drones that lets you spy on other players (with a hidden opportunity to fly over a topless beach)

Hacking surveillance cameras that let you watch other people play and if you hack the camera to the highest level you could access other players PS Eye / Kinect feed.

Hacking a computer, if successful you can control mechs in other players' games.

When does that first screenshot take place? Before or after? If you look in the area of where the shrapnel was, there looks like a hole of sorts.

Quite difficult to really tell.

I guess it's some sort of triangle-ish hair. I've seen some hair render problems in other screenshots.

Big Boss is lead to believe the horn is shrapnel from the attack that sent him into a coma, but it's secretly a mind control and tracking device implanted by Kaz and Ocelot.
