Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

Once again, I said 'meh' not negative.
If you can't tell if it was positive or negative I proved my point perfectly.
The thing is, for every Mario Galaxy fan that can't appreciate early footage of this Mario 3D World, they are kids out there who are ecstatic about the new multiplayer direction featuring. Show the trailer to kids: I did it and I now know why Nintendo thinks this was a good idea.

Multiplayer being the big focus is a massive turnoff for me, simply because I don't have many IRL friends willing to sit down and play a platformer with me. The only person who would lives a couple of hours away, and that's one friend, not three. Plenty of friends to cover other genres, but not platformers.

So this whole multiplayer thing is going to be totally lost on me.

Previews are positive, but are not as overwhelmingly exciting as they were for Galaxy.

I think very few people are really thinking it will be a bad game. It's just disappointing, because it's not as fresh as what we were expecting. It will be a great game, we will have a lot of fun with it, but there will always be that "oh, what could have been" feeling.

And it has that godawful run button again.

Galaxy 1/2 are tough acts to follow, that's for sure. I can understand the desire for another groundbreaking hit like Galaxy. Heck, I do too.

This game looks great though, I'll enjoy it with my Mario fan friend no doubt. I still think there will be a single-player Mario successor at some point, though. I'll be kinda disappointed if not.

Part of it is the Mushroom kingdom is getting too familiar now. One of my favorite things about Galaxy was that it took place somewhere else, and we got different scenery. Like the Toy Galaxy or the planet with the pancakes and donuts in space (my personal favorite lol).

It also means 4 different characters for single player, so it does still affect the game even if you never intend to play with others.

I too don't give a thing about playing coop, but I'll eat my hat if the single player part isn't as just as good. Have faith man

Possibly true. I don't think you need 'epic' though, just some sense of drama. Yoshi's Island wasn't more epic that Mario World - it was more intimate. But from the title screen it seemed important.

That was a long time ago, I'm talking about the now and the past few years.

I kind of wish they just kept that stuff isolated within the NSMB series. I'm never going to play that way either. Even with friends and family who are capable of playing it with, there's just no time to gather them at the same time in one location to play.

It doesn't take away from the single player experience in those games and I doubt it will here as well.

Well, the game was built around multiplayer methinks. I would like to think that the game would probably have turned out differently if multiplayer wasn't a key element. I don't care that it's in it now. I'll still buy and enjoy the game as I did with NSMB U.

Yeah, the multiplayer stuff is the least of my worries. NSMBW and NSMBU were great in single player. I have no doubt Nintendo will nail the balance between the two in this

The multiplayer aspect is the thing that actually makes it interesting to me. NSMB Wii (and presumably WiiU) was amazingly fun with a friend or three to tag along. The idea of doing that in a 3D space sounds really fun. Of course, I have no IRL friends to play this with either. Nor do I possess a WiiU. Maybe by the time I actually buy a WiiU I'll have kids that are old enough to play with me :P

If Nintendo released a video showing this game with a more behind-the-back, Mario 64-style camera angle, the amount of flip-flopping on this site would be unbelievable. 3DLand/World look kind of quaint with their isometric camera angle, but 3D Land plays much better than any previous Mario game.

Real Talk: If Galaxy had an "epic" orchestra to emulate the "epic" scale, this game should go with the Big Band Style:

Big Band Medley

Super Mario Bros. 3 Ending

While I adored Galaxy's soundtrack, I thought something like this would work more for Mario. It would be similar to what they did in the Throwback Galaxy.

Pay attention Gaf those two, speaks the truth.

I, too, am disappointed that I won't get to experience much of this game with multiplayer, but multiplayer was a big feature of NSMBU and that game was totally killer in single player; so I'm not too concerned that this won't be a stellar single player experience.

3D Land plays much better than any previous Mario game.

This is VERY subjective. I never found any other 3D Mario game to be as troublesome and frustrating when it came to control scheme, and I'm honest, not trying to troll here. It's partially 3DS design (too clumped for my hands), maybe in some way due to 8-way lock (I'm not saying this as fact, only as a suggestion because I always thought "something" was off), and the worst offender of all - run button.

Mind you, I still had fun with the game and nearly 100%'d it (can't recall the exact level, it's over midway through SW-8), but it's my least favorite 3D Mario by a longshot, both due to design and controls.

I definitely agree with you on the 3DS's design, it's a terribly crampy handheld. Playing Mario Kart 7 on that thing is hell. I love the run button, though. Definitely made it feel a lot more like classic Mario to me, and helped with platforming precision imo. I think one thing it definitely improves upon compared to Galaxy is in-air control - Mario feels like crap in Galaxy if you're trying to adjust your jumps. They really *needed* that spin move to make up for it. 3D Land feels much more natural in that regard.

If we're ranking 3D Mario games, I'd say:
3DLand > Galaxy 2 > Galaxy >>> 64; leaving out Sunshine because it's been so long.

My list of favourite 3D Mario games:
1. Galaxy 2
2. Galaxy
3. 3D Land and 64
...
10. Sunshine

Best controls in 3D Mario games (to show I don't have something against Sunshine completely):
1. 3D Land
2. Sunshine
3. Galaxy games
4. 64

:/

I don't care that it's not Galaxy 3. I just wanted something new and fresh, which is exactly what escapist is saying this game is not.

Nintendo's E3 was just too safe.

I'm not going to try and say the game is super innovative, because I think that's the sort of thing that can only be seen in the final design, when all the levels are sat next to each other and admired or condemned for their ideas or lack thereof. But so far we have:

- Four player platforming in a 3D environment, something all-new to the series and pretty much unheard of
- The ability to play as, in single or multiplayer, the full roster of Mario greats, each with unique abilities
- Maybe the best-looking new suit we've seen since the cape/feather

I think those are all pretty fantastic additions, tbh. Plus, the levels look a lot larger and more open than 3D Land's, with the original per-level ideas of Mario Galaxy. I think people would regard this completely differently with a behind-the-back camera or if NSMB hadn't already done 4 players in a 2D environment.

It's weird to me that people are so negative about this game. I'm getting a direct sequel to my favorite Mario game. The Cat Suit looks fucking rad, and I'm completely stoked for a new batch of level design from my some of the best level designers in the world.

That said, I hope we see something more in the style of Super Mario 64. Maybe something where it's all one open world to explore.

Just my opinion, of course, but there's no Mario game even close to the excellency in level design, mechanics and controls of the Mario Galaxy saga (Disclaimer: I played all of them). To me, the "double jump" and the "melee" skill that the "Spin" technique in those games created the most perfect controls for a 3D platform game ever.

I already pre-ordered 3D World, but I don't think it will reach Galaxy-levels of quality. I hope I'm wrong, though.

And yet it's still going to get great reviews and most people will love it just like pretty much every Mario game.

Majority of people are not saying otherwise. Just because we are disappointed doesn't know we are out of touch with reality. A lot of people are saying just that - it's gonna be great, it will be scored highly, we will have fun playing it, but it doesn't preclude us from being disappointed and deeming this game way too safe for our liking.

I don't know why some weird notion that these two are exclusive to each other arose.

I'm sure it's been discussed already but does anyone else find the name "3D World" a little odd for this game? Clearly it's based on/a sequel to/an evolution of 3D Land, but 3D Land was called that because it was on the 3ds and had level designs and camera angles that emphasized the stereoscopic 3d effect. The Wii U has no such effect so what exactly does "3D World" refer to here? This game is no more or less 3d than Mario 64 or Sunshine or the Galaxy games.

You answered some of this yourself. Stereoscopic 3D effect aside, the game itself is obviously derived from 3D Land. From what we see, they will make up from not being in 3D with a more flexible camera and probably better shadows. I went back to 3D Land, though, and I was surprised on how good the shadow system was in that game.

Going with the Land -> World suffix, we can already see that the levels are considerably longer than 3D Land, like Mario 3 vs Mario World. I'm curious on how the over-world will look like in this game.

Yeah. I wondered this too. Maybe HD World would be a better fit?
Plus, I can see it causing potential confusion - given there's still confusion about the DS / 3DS and Wii / Wii U.

I'll buy this, but mostly because there's almost nothing else of note to play on my Wii U this year. I want to use the damn thing. I find it hard to believe that this is truly a system seller...then again if Nintendo can do some effective advertising this holiday season showcasing the four player mode, it might make a dent.

By that logic, four player NSMBU should have made an even bigger dent, but it hasn't. They needed this game to really sell Wii U to the core. So far, it has done nothing but divide us.

I feel like every Nintendo fan who knows they love 3D Mario is going to buy this no matter what. They don't need to appeal to their diehard audience with this one, they need to appeal to everyone who wants to have a fun experience but isn't sure where to find it.

NSMBU has something like a 80% tie ratio with the Wii U. It's doing its job.. but it needs other software to establish the userbase. I expect the game to continue to sale decent numbers as the Wii U revives later in the year.

Was expecting something radically different, so this was a great surprise. LOVED 3D Land on the 3DS though, so I have extremely high hopes for this. It looks and plays great from what I've seen and experienced so far, so the excitement is still there for me. I can't wait for the crazy hidden exits and collectibles they hide away utilizing the cat suit mechanic.

Why do people hate Sunshine again? Because it was off the heels of 64?

1. Super Mario 64
2. Super Mario Galaxy 2
3. First 70 Shines of Super Mario Sunshine
4. Second Half of Super Mario 3D Land
5. Super Mario Galaxy
6. First Half of Super Mario 3D Land
7. Blue Coin Shines of Mario Sunshine

So...

1. Super Mario 64
2. Super Mario Galaxy 2
3. Super Mario Galaxy
4. Super Mario 3D Land
5. Super Mario Sunshine

I love the fuck out of all 5 games, but 3D Land and Sunshine had obvious flaws that hurt the games for me. 64 and the Galaxies are pretty close to perfect video games in my book.
