Dragonball Z Battle of Z (PS3/360/Vita) announced

Hopefully it's not another shitty Spike game.

I don't care if it's Budokai-style or not (but I'd prefer that it were), but please don't be another Spike game. They have proven to me beyond a shadow of a doubt they are incapable of making a game that isn't shallow and terrible.

hey remember this crap
Exactly what the description reminded me of.

The problem with Spike's games, especially towards the end, was that everybody feels too "same-y". And that's not even counting the "clones". At least the team behind Zenkai put forth the effort to make even the SSJ/God versions of Goku actually play quite differently from each another, and not just settle for giving them altered specials and calling it a day.

But in any case, I distinctly remembered that Spike said that 2011's Ultimate Tenkaichi would be their last game (as part of the three year contract they had). Unless Bamco renewed their contract...

I would hope they would work with the zenkai battle royale engine. Correction I really hope this game is in the same design and output.

Logically speaking I hope it'll be something fresh

This, and also Spike's animation looks like crap. All the characters move like robots.

This better be a follow up to BT3. Yes I want a massive roster for the fan serve.

Just add these characters to the roster and im good

-Bills
-Rildo
-Star Dragons
-Rest of the henchman

Just to let people know they posted pics of the game now. I would post them here but I'm not sure if its against the rules since its scans from Jump. Just look them up, it looks like Ultimate Tenkaichi with Zentai battle system.

I just checked it out.

I'm not getting my hopes up for this one, but I'll wait till I see some videos before I make a judgment.

I feel like DBZ tries to get too clever for their own good.

2D fighting is still the best. Shin Budokai 2 and Buodkai 3 are still the best games period.

Huh? Different forms also had different melee attacks and blast 1 abilities in the Spike games, especially in Tenkaichi 3, when they almost completely eliminated reused movesets.

For example, Kaioshin/Supreme Kai's charged attacks went from copying someone else's (I think it was Freeza's, although I might be mixing him up with his budokai self) in BT2 to using a summoned block of metal to slap people around in BT3, while his standard attacks often had disjointed hit boxes to mimic psychic powers.

Burst Limit was a bad game...

Burst Limit was AWESOME!!
It does a great job at capturing the insane sense of speed in the show, unlike any other DBZ game I've played.

WISH WISH WISH!!! they made a Burst Limit 2 might have been the game to convince me to buy a console.

Burst Limit had close to the best fighting.

But almost the worst overall game. Just no content period. It felt like a demo.

EDIT: Well, not worse overall game. Just because the fighitng was so good. But still, dissapointing.

Different looking melee attacks. Important distinction there.

Honestly, the only things that really bug me about Burst Limit are the fatigue system and that weird input buffer. They should have just made BL play like SBAR, and I would be playing it almost every day (like I do SBAR).

Ooooh my gaaaaawd.
Vita purchase finally justified.
If this is any good, that is.

Also, best DBZ game was Supersonic Warriors.

btw who is behind this game? what dev?

Hey man, it's cool if you like forgettable games with terrible cameras and awful animation that prioritize having 865 clone characters over depth gameplay variety. It's no skin off my back. Play till your heart's content.

that is where you lost me..

Complicated controls are not the same thing as depth. All of the characters in Spike's games play almost exactly the same way, barring maybe having a slight differentiation in the number of hits in a combo, or different-looking beam moves.

Dimps' Dragon Ball titles are legitimate fighting games wrapped in a quality DBZ tortilla.

Spike's are just poor attempts at Dragon Ball simulators. They prioritize fan service over making quality games.

it was complicated it for you?

BT2/BT3/RB all those games have depth... high level play with great reward. Spike's failed hard with RB2 and follow ups mechanics.. and Ultimate Blast was a fan service game which sold a lot because in the West when by the name of Ultimate Tenkaichi.

Spike's Cancels system was one of the best idea ever for a DBZ game... even tho it was unbalance.

disregarding all their games make your opinion invalid...

The same depth as this for me:

The controls are unwieldy, at best.

I've seen "high-level" play in Spike's games, trust me. I'm air-quoting that.

I've played all of Spike's DBZ games. I'm not disregarding anything. I'm just comparing them to Dimps' much better titles. If Spike's games hadn't been preceded by such quality, I probably wouldn't criticize Spike, honestly.

Just out of curiosity, do you play any other fighting games?

BB,SSF4,TvC,MvC3,MK9,CJ, a little bit of GG to name a few... what are you getting at? that I don't know what is the topic in hand?

The same depth as this for me:

not bad.. one person told me is like rock, paper & scissors...

The best thing about Tenkaichi 3 was that it gave Goku his cell saga saiyan armour costume. He looked bad ass when wearing it.

From the looks of it, this game is clearly an updated version of Zenkai Battle Royale. It's been a while since I've played a DBZ game, so I'm interested.

Next-gen DBZ game is what I'm truly waiting for, though.

I was gauging your level of knowledge, yeah. Honestly, I'm surprised you have any respect for the Tenkaichi games, if you actually have some knowledge on how to effectively play the games you listed there. I guess I've seen stranger things; one time, I saw a guy just straight up eat rocks. That was pretty weird.

Is it weird that the last DBZ fighter I enjoyed was SSW2?

What's the best one on PS3, guys? Or actually, the one that resembles a traditional fighter the most. I wouldn't mind some DBZ fighting :P I'd try one of the Wii games too but honestly screw 3rd-person fighters, yuck. Shame because they seem to have HUGE rosters.

Burst Limit is your best bet on PS3.

Also, trust me: the rosters in Spike's games don't really mean anything, since all the characters pretty much all play the same way. The only major difference besides looks is some of the utility of their supers, but there are really only a small number of unique supers in the game spread out and repeated amongst the 942 characters.

Different looking melee attacks. Important distinction there.

Number of hits, speed, power and range all varied from attack to attack, once they got unique animations. There was no priority though, but that didn't make the attacks the same.

Also, regarding general variety of the characters, don't forget Blast 1 attacks and even specific set combo sequences (in BT3).

Spike's are just poor attempts at Dragon Ball simulators. They prioritize fan service over making quality games.

I don't see how attempting to design the gameplay after DBZ in a DBZ game is somehow sidelining quality, especially compared to Budokai. At least they were going for something unique, before going off road after BT3. Budokai was basically an inferior Tekken, with a juggle based combo system, where each character basically only had two starters and a DBZ skin on top and there wasn't even high/low. I'll never get the love for that series.
