Lawyer: Have you ever used the N-word yourself?

Deen: Yes, of course.
Lawyer: Okay. In what context?
Deen: Well, it was probably when a black man burst into the bank that I was working at and put a gun to my head.

Lawyer: Okay. And what did you say?
Deen: Well, I don’t remember, but the gun was dancing all around my temple … I didn’t — I didn’t feel real favorable towards him.

Lawyer: Okay. Well, did you use the N-word to him as he pointed a gun in your head at your face?
Deen: Absolutely not.

Lawyer: Well, then, when did you use it?
Deen: Probably in telling my husband.

Lawyer: Okay. Have you used it since then?
Deen: I’m sure I have, but it’s been a very long time.

Lawyer: Can you remember the context in which you have used the N-word?
Deen: No.

Lawyer: Has it occurred with sufficient frequency that you cannot recall all of the various context in which you’ve used it?
Deen: No, no.

Lawyer: Well, then tell me the other context in which you’ve used the N-word?
Deen: I don’t know, maybe in repeating something that was said to me.

Lawyer: Like a joke?
Deen: No, probably a conversation between blacks. I don’t–I don’t know. But that’s just not a word that we use as time has gone on. Things have changed since the ’60s in the south. And my children and my brother object to that word being used in any cruel or mean behavior. As well as I do.

Does she hate black people? I don't think so. I think she doesn't really grasp or comprehend that people are offended (and many people act offended) when the word Nigger is used in any context, even at private in your home.

Not at all, I actually expected this. And always will when dealing with someone from the south.

Out of curiosity, what was your source for this info? The first sources I came across were those like this, this, Stormfront, this, etc.
Don't mean anything by it, but just thought it was weird. They're obviously getting it from somewhere. A wiki page?

I don't buy that she doesn't understand it offends people. That is bullshit. If she didn't know it was offensive she would've had no problem calling the guy that robbed her nigger to his face. They asked her if she called the robber Nigger to his face and she responds absolutely not. She didn't just say no, she said absolutely not cos she knew she would be fucked if she said that to his face.

Are they any truth to these allegations?

And if she did use it in the past...how long ago? People who grow up in bigoted times are going to be raised that way, and will say the awful things that those around them say. The important thing to know is if her views and vocab changed over time as she became less ignorant of those around her?

Dude, she wanted a minstrel show and speaks wistfully of times when black people were treated as sub-human.

They are her own words. About a party she recently wished to host.

That isn't what I said. She knows it offends people when you say it to them. I don't think she comprehends, being an older woman from the south, that it offends people even when you use the word in private, and they find out about it, even if it is used in a joke.

Which is why she was more than comfortable telling the lawyer about it. Which is also why she pointed out, at the end, that she doesn't use the word in public, isn't racist, and knows it offends people. She also didn't understand what was wrong with the party she wanted to host. There is a disconnect there for her. She doesn't get it's just as bad when used in private, as it is used around black people or in public.

She said it herself in a deposition. Legally binding.
