Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

Some people have disturbingly little faith this game will deliver the goods.
- Made by Galaxy 1 and 2 team
- Koji Kondo is doing the soundtrack (for the first time since Galaxy 1 FYI)
- Cat Suit
- In interviews levels were said to have the same crazy designs of Galaxy levels.
- Level selector from e3 demo is obviously not final. There will be a hub world and everything
Dont judge the game off 5 demo levels and assume this is a party game. Its a full game you guys.

How can you look at this... and with a straight face tell me it doesn't look like a Wii game?... i know the quality of the screenshot is not good... but the texture work alone speaks wonders...

well jeez look thats a ps vita game. (which i think looks awesome, more visual appeal to that for me than say gears of war even though i love gow games)

you do realise games dont have to go ott with shaders and bump textures and jizz rendering and whatever?

I was also initially a little disappointed, but now I am more hyped for this game than for any other E3 game.

My only disappointment is, that the Mario64/Galaxy type of Mario games tends to focus more on exploration and "questing", while the other types of Mario games focus more on "survive the level and reach the goal post".

IMO, Mario 64 and Galaxy are not in the same vein. This game is a continuation of the trend that Galaxy started: super linear level design, with a focus on platforming more than exploring.

I really don't understand why people are now remembering Galaxy as this game with a focus on exploring anything. You're going in a straight line.

It's not a direct feed......
Surely you can see the difference in the other screens? Otherwise... you either got a problem or you are blessed ;p

I'm still keeping my hopes up for a real Mario Galaxy successor (Like Sunshine was to 64 and Galaxy was to Sunshine), but at this point I wouldn't be surprised if this was the only 3D Mario we got. As fun as it looks it's not what I wanted either. :/

Yeah, me too.

I still have some hope that someday they will make a true successor to the 64 formula, just only a little bit more open world.

I want my 3D Mario worlds so big, that the usage of Yoshi would actually make sense for the first time since the 2D games.

Yoshi would be the riding animal it's supposed to be, the best partner for travelling the vast areas of this world.

They could even include some funny and innovative 3rd person shooter mechanic for Yoshi with shooting eggs against gigantic enemies.

But if Nintendo and some fans are so stubborn that they decided only ultra linear platforming is the "pure essence" of a Mario game...so be it.

Just make a damn new franchise out of this awesome concept players love to revisit for almost 2 (two fucking!) decades with Mario 64.

I don't doubt the Wii U's technical chops... but Nintendo should know by now that gamers scoff at the Wii U and mock it because its not as powerful as the upcoming consoles, they should've tried to do something that makes the Wii U sing... and we get a 3DS sequel only with better IQ?... that's were my beef lies.

I really don't like the camera in this. It looks like an old cRPG or something. I prefer the angle Galaxy had, especially since I doubt I'll ever play this with any friends.

Lucky for you the camera can be rotated around using the right stick in single player.

FYI, Mario ran faster without Yoshi in SMW. Mario 64 sequel would be fantastic though, much better than a Galaxy or Sunshine sequel imo.

Wait wait wait. Are you trying to tell my that an EXTREMELY low quality screenshot makes the game look bad? How the hell can you speak about texture work with a screen that bad? Not to mention even the game looks even more amazing in motion at full resolution; the grass in that grass level sways in the wind, for example.

Yeah, me too.

There's still a lot of Mario 64 in this game. One section of a level in the levels we've seen is bigger than an entire Mario 64 level.

I don't think Nintendo is too concerned with mocking insecure bullies. It's less powerfull than ps4 and xbone. Waay less. And you either are secure enough to cary that "shame", or you don't... Would i have liked it to be more powerful? Yes. But it's HD and a huge step up from Wii.Wii games looked like dead donkey ass on my HD screen.
should've tried to do something that makes the Wii U sing... .
I think in IQ it looks very good. Perfect art-direction imo. But i realise that a lot of people are only impressed with very bumpy obvious textures like that crap in Kameo or wit stuff that looks realistic.

... and we get a 3DS sequel only with better IQ?... that's were my beef lies.
Probably different gameplay and much more open world, but we'll have to wait and see what more they have in store in this game.
Thus far it looks waay less impressive in innovation than the first time when we got to see Galaxy, i agree.
But i'm also in for a new big world Mario.

I don't know how well the Fallon demo really does at selling people on the game that didn't know about it. We get four minutes of Reggie trying to rush him through the level and explaining that the cat-suit is the "big innovation" in this title. Just feels kind of underselling...although to be honest Jimmy Fallon annoys the hell out of me anyway so maybe that's part of my issue.

I have no doubt that this game will be fun and have the varied and interesting level designs that we know EAD Tokyo is capable of, but I do somewhat agree with the people that aren't totally hyped for this, either. In my case, I feel underwhelmed that it feels like the Mario series has, in recent years, sort of turned around and started backtracking when it comes to world presentation and the "expansive" nature of Mario. Going from SMB3, to World, to 64, to Sunshine, each new Mario game brought along this sense of constancy to the setting you were exploring, there were real themes to the locales, and twists on those themes. Courses in Mario 64 and Sunshine were revisited and allowed for little subplots and minor characters to make a real presence, and it made those worlds more memorable. The first Mario Galaxy was kind of the inflection point, as the "series of planetoids" idea allowed the team to free up gameplay from a thematic standpoint, but it started coming at the cost of familiarity with the world. Galaxy 2 took that idea a little further and brought back the grid-style level select, and then 3DLand just gave you a "map" consisting of nothing but a straight line to plow through all of these completely disjointed levels in a very linear fashion. No more course themes or galaxy names, we're right back in the days of 1-1, 1-2, 2-4, 4-airship, etc. Mario 3D Land was good, but the game as a whole feels far less memorable to me because the whole thing is just this series of disjointed platforming challenges. I believe that with the addition of 4-players, we're going to continue in that direction, treating the series simply as a collection of flagpoles to be reached, rather than a whole new world to adventure across.

The crowd seemed to be getting into it a good deal, anyway. Of course, late night audience crowds aren't really that reliable since they're supposed to cheer for everything. Still, I got the impression much of it was genuine. It was an energetic demonstration.

I really like this game from what was shown so far. Mario 3D Land was just so much fun. This looks just as fun. So I am confident this will be great!

The textures look even worse if you turn off the TV.

Watching people play Mario usually makes me feel like a God Gamer.

Of course, give me something from the Racing [that's not Mario Kart]/Fighting [that's not Super Smash Bros./BlazBlue/Guilty Gear] genre and watch me suffer. >_<

But they're hiring a ton of new developers this year, and you shouldn't expect this to be the main 3D Mario title. For all we know, Nintendo is developing another 3D Mario game right now.

And none of the other games interest you enough to keep your console?

I didn't say anything about selling my console, that was some other gaffer.

You must be kidding yourself if you think anyone else is working on a separate wii u 3d mario.
I'll save you the trouble: They aren't, don't hold any hope for it even starting work until 3D world is done.

It's funny how the dynamic camera can really make this game look a hell of a lot better simply because it exists and creates a greater scope for the game's world.

The more footage I see of this game, the less it resembles 3D Land. Looks more like Galaxy 3 minus the gravity stuff.

Wow, that looks great. Really gives the game a more dynamic feel.

This will be the first Mario game since Sunshine that has a fully controllable camera, too.

My first impressions of this game were totally wrong. The more I see the more I realize this could potentially end up being my favorite mario game ever. Frog suit and Kuribo's Shoe? Imaginative and diverse level ideas? 4-player 3D Mario co-op? YES!

WHAT!? As in the whole soundtrack?

Cat suit looks awesome for speedruns. I really hope people take to the game and figure out how to do crazy acrobatics. Not that there's usually a whole lot of room for that in newer Mario designs.

Even the character portraits are beautiful evoking that 90s Mario feel. The enemies look colorful, creative and diverse and remind me a lot of classic Mario, especially World. The only thing I can see wrong with this game at this point is the flag poles at the end of the level still being around. Considering this is Super Mario 3D World, I think this would have been a perfect opportunity to ditch the flag poles and bring back the goal posts from Super Mario World. My idea for a 4 player Mario game with goal posts would have worked perfect here where instead of the points from the posts adding up until you reach a mini-game, the points instead add up as currency to use in mushroom shops to buy items.

I thought he only composed one or two in the original Galaxy? He mostly supervised the lead composer, didn't he?

Yeah, I looked it up and Yokota is on board again too. After listening to direct feed audio i'm certain 2-1 is Kondo's doing, and it's beautiful.

Koji Kondo doesn't compose as many tracks as he used to. He spends more time as a sound adviser nowadays, so I wouldn't expect too much from him out of Super Mario 3D World.

Guys, what kind of enemies would you like to see appear in Super Mario 3D World that were originally featured in Super Mario World? We know Chargin' Chuck is back.

Dinosaurs

Dinosaurs

Yeah, dinosaurs like Rex and Dino-torch would be fun to have back. I'd also like to see Blargg the lava monster appear too.

By the way, do we know if this game will have small-sized Mario, or I'm just thinking about him being in Super Mario 3D Land ? Heh, I mean, how small can Toad really get?

There will be a hub world and everything

wow

wow

WOW

This is huge, for me. I was thinking the other day that it would be a travesty if this game did not have one. One of my most beloved gaming experiences was running around inside and outside of Peach's castle in Super Mario 64.

And I wonder if Koji Kondo composed that tune from Mice Hills (2-1), because that is super catchy. I love it.
