Metal Gear Solid V (PS3/360/PS4/XBO/Maybe PC) - Extended 9 minute E3 trailer

If Kojima wants to retcon anything he can just go ahead and retcon EVERYTHING about MGS4. That'd be great.

I see what you're saying, but those platforms were hauling ass at like 40mph in the jungle motorcycle chase. Aside from the fact that many were bumping into trees, that's REALLY advanced stuff. If we had those things today, even with a high fuel cost you better believe people would use them.

The flying platforms were based on these. Seems totally legit when you take into account the prototype nature of tech in the MGS universe and the general wackiness of the series.

female character in bikini, kojima gonna kojima.
This would be my second pet peeve :P

But Metal Gear Solid has always been pretty anime in terms of maturity and character design, so sadly I just expect the sexist female character designs at this point.

Makes the surprise of a genuinely good female character design (The Boss, MGS4 buff-shoulders-Meryl) a nice one.

He was going for a shocking and a "oh no, he didn't..." tone for the trailer and then she shows up... lol

I'll never understand the complaints about Quiet. She's going to be the main female character of the game and I fully expect her to be as realized and rich as The Boss was. Why doubt Kojima? Furthermore, it's already been said over and over, but there's been lightly dressed characters in MGS before and I've never even thought of it as exploitative. The million reasons why she's possibly dressed that way have already been enumerated (torture, climate, photosynthesis, etc).

I mean, she's a silent badass type. She's probably going to take tons of domes off with that rifle of her and look like a boss while doing it. She's supposed to be a warrior, and to me she feels and look like one. She looks cold and deadly. I think she's allowed to be sexy too. It doesn't affect her status as a soldier in any way.

A well-developed personality does not excuse a poor visual design.

Also, "climate" is not a good reason for wearing a bra and nowt else.

I doubt Kojima because he has an awful track record with this stuff. The Boss is the only genuinely decent female he's ever done, and even then it was a slightly weird mother relationship thing. Meryl was cool for actually having the physique of a fighter, but she was prone to tantrums and dolled herself up thickly in makeup.

That's it.

Well let's agree to disagree about her design and The Boss. I personally thinks she looks fantastic and I thought The Boss was one of the greatest female characters in videogame history.

In MGS1, Meryl gets caught in a tank top and panties and even does a panty "snap" when she readjusts them. Quiet has more context, it would seem, in that the scene in question probably takes place after she escapes her captors (since we know she was captured and tortured). Would you find what clothes you could or run as fast as you could in the situation?

To put it into even more context, we have Snake (both solid and Big Boss) escaping shirtless and Raiden escaping completely naked after being tortured. Kojima has given fanservice for both genders throughout the series. Most of the time it's in context though.

The Boss is the only genuinely decent female he's ever done.

I disagree. The Boss wasn't that great imo. Having her come back as an AI in Peace Walker was ridiculous and her treatment as a sort of biblical figure in MGS4 removed any sort of admiration I had previously held for that character. Totally went overboard with the reverence.

Olga is definitely my personal favorite. She betrays her entire group of comrades, the ones left to her by her late father, just to save her daughter. Plus she easily has the best ninja design imo, minus the classic Grey Fox eye.

Because not everything Kojima spins is gold. Much of his ideas are very provocative, but it's the execution that can be truly baffling at times. Like whatever he was trying to accomplish with the Beauty and Beast corps was a total flop, imo.

I take all his work on a case by case basis. It's very hit or miss in Hideoland, but I do usually give him the benefit of doubt. Quiet could be a surprisingly in-depth character for all I know. Not likely, but anything's possible.

I can see this.

Speaking as someone who's also had his reverence for The Boss eroded through the messianic treatment she's been given since 4.

I was speaking about her MGS3 portrayal.

The AI stupidity of Peace Walker and the "everyone was just interpreting her wrong!" of MGS4 wasn't what I had in mind.

And shit I'd (purposefully) forgotten about the B&B corps. The "these psychologically tortured prisoner soldier women are actually hot slutty supermodels who shall crawl on all fours and moan for you in a skin-tight, wet catsuit if you pull out a camera!" shenanigans of MGS4 are all the example you need to counter the confusing "why doubt Hideo?" line.

We don't know the context. All we do know is that Kojima very specifically wanted to highlight the character wearing just a bra. If we aren't shown the context, we have no reason to believe it exists. Especially not after Eva.

The guy with the scar. It looks like Zero's scar. It's on the wrong side but maybe the picture is just flipped.

edit: And yeah, MGS3' story was the best. It all went downhill from there.

Edit2: Also my theory that the zombie-ninjas in MGS5 are perfect-soldier prototypes:

During the next four years, Dr. Clark and her team kept Fox drugged while they experimented on him, the results of which were used in the creation of the Next-Generation Special Forces.

So Fox was a perfect soldier prototype in MPO, then I think in MGS5's days the zombie-ninjas are the new prototypes (made based on him), and then in MGS1 we have the genome soldiers, but ultimately it's all based on him in some way.

The Dr. Clark thing is so dumb though. Para-Medic was killed by Gray Fox, but this was a plot by EVE and Ocelot to kill former Patriots members. But then Gray Fox cuts off Ocelot's arm, and then transplants Liquid's arm onto himself? lol

I bet in MGS5 she will be the one who created the zombie-ninja-soldiers. She was a fan for horror movies remember? Maybe we will see why she becomes "evil".

I have no reason to doubt the depth of Quiet as of yet, honestly. A female sniper whose name implies stealth sniper fire sounds promising. Also, with the new face tech Fox Engine offers and considering she is mute, her methods of communication can be really interesting and profound.

Olga is awesome!

--------------

Also, I forgot to post this when we were discussing wacky MGS2 moments.

Remember that time when the President of the United States cupped Raiden's genitals?

One thing that bothers me about the Metal Gear games is how Snake and BB don't believe in the supernatural

Seriously?

AFTER ALL THE CRAP YOU'VE SEEN?!

She has octo-camo skin.
Pretty much what I assumed.

I don't think her ridiculous oufit has anything to do with torture or whatever. It's to accentuate her full-body octocamo skin.

And yes, blatant sex appeal.

Kojima confirmed that she's normally in full fatigues. Or she turns completely black and thus a black bikini. :p

Even weirder is when Ocelot of all people straight up says that in MGS2.

"There's no such thing as miracles or the supernatural, only cutting edge technology!"

Kojima confirmed that she's normally in full fatigues. Or she turns completely black and thus a black bikini. :p
When did he say that? Gotta link?

The one thing I actually liked is that most of the supernatural stuff is debunked through faux-science or circumstance, but then they still leave some small room for doubt. Obviously the nano-machines are a lame excuse to explain so many things, but I always liked that it retained that realistic edge when it comes to that kind of stuff and had some mystery around it at the same time.

My favorite example of this was when they explained Fortune's well...fortune. Everyone believed her to be the luckiest person alive due to bullets never being able to touch her. In reality though, Ocelot comes out and says that the Patriots just planted some sort of electromagnetic device on her person that gave her said ability. Not to mention he does it in a cool way, turns it off, shoots her, and then it is revealed that he has his own device that deflects bullets.

"You're no Lady Luck. You have nothing that we didn't give you. Do you know why no bullet coud hit you? It wasn't magic, or some New Age mumbo-jumbo. Certainly wasn't your psychic talents. It was all staged by the Patriots.

There's no such things as miracles, or the supernatural, only cutting edge technology.
"

Then boom, Ocelot shoots all of Metal Gear Ray's payload at Fortune and company, and it all misses.

"She is Lady Luck."

One of the best parts of that game. My personal Favorite MGS game.

Kojima confirmed that she's normally in full fatigues. Or she turns completely black and thus a black bikini. :p

Actually he said the exact opposite, please stop posting falsehoods. If you stick to the facts you won't see me keep popping back in this thread.

Nope, sorry to disappoint but Kojima said that she will be wearing that as her main outfit during the game, but that there's a reason for that. My bet? Her skin has octo-camo so she needs to be naked to use it.

And yeah she speaks Japanese fluently, she was on Kojima's podcast talking about 3D capture and stuff (that pic with all the cameras). Won't hear her voice in the game though, since her character can't talk.

The way he explained it in the podcast made it sound like that's not the case. He said he knows people are gonna ask why is a sniper naked, that would only make her more visible in the desert. And he said that there's a reason why she does that, but he can't tell yet. And I think the black paint around her eyes disappearing is a hint of what her secret ability is.

And then in regards to the 'reason/explanation'...

Pretty much what I assumed.

I don't think her ridiculous oufit has anything to do with torture or whatever. It's to accentuate her full-body octocamo skin.

And yes, blatant sex appeal.

Octo-skin camo can work however Kojima wants it to, it doesn't mean she has to be nearly naked. In the words of Laura Hudson discussing outrageous comic book outfits:
Female characters are only insatiable, barely-dressed aliens and strippers because someone decided to make them that way. It isn't a fact. It isn't an inviolable reality, especially in a comic book universe that has just been rebooted. In the end, what matters is what you choose to show people and how you show them, not the reasons you make up to justify it. Because this is comics, everybody. You can make up anything.
Kojima can make her power work however he wants, (nano-machines son), there's no reason it can't extend to clothes; the End could use photosynthesis in a ghillie suit for pete's sake. Snipers spend most of their time lying on the ground anyway, she'd want to wear clothes just to alleviate the discomfort of her skin being pressed directly against hot sand and rocks and to reduce environmental exposure, chance of being wounded by shrapnel, etc. She's already doing this with her "pants", no reason it can't extend to a shirt or tank top.

If Kojima refuses to let octo-skin or whatever work on clothes, wouldn't it make more sense for her to not wear anything at all? One out of place element could catch someone's eye and make her power pointless. Out of place and mismatched colors are quite striking and would give away her position regardless of how camouflaged the rest of her is. Let alone something like a black bikini which dramatically contrasts against desert tans.

I don't like to keep dropping in this thread and mildly derailing, there's a ton of cool stuff being discussed in terms of theories and crazy gameplay possibilities from past MGS games, but so long as people keep trying to say Quiet's outfit is anything other than stupid, I will return. Especially if people say its not her default outfit, because Kojima already said it is.

Sorry, my bad then. I had thought there was a picture of the actor in fatigues for some sort of scanning and that's where Kojima said that.

This was the image:

'

I thought that too, but that's apparently 2 years old and it may very well be just in a couple of scenes, for example before she the octoskin power or something.

Oh, so that's the case.

You can't deny she's naked for sex appeal.
Whether that's a problem or not for you it's subjective, but you can't really argue the reasoning behind it.

I usually have a laugh at Kojima's depiction of sexuality, as it's pretty funny and self conscious (and he can create non sexual characters, when he wants to).
He does get obnoxiously over board often, though (not just with sexualization, with everything he does) like in MGS4.

So i can understand if people aren't able to stomach his style.
I skipped MGS:PW for that very reason, it seemed another MGS4 kind of Metal Gear, were he had no restraint.

He seems to be kind of taking this (MGSV) more seriously though, plus the gameplay looks amazing.

She would have been a better character with that outfit. Now she's just another video game girl in a bikini.

There are photos like that from a session where Kojima was testing out a 3D capture unit (to decide if he wanted to build one for his studio). In that same session they also took pictures of Stephanie in a bikini as well. The actual confirmation on the outfit was on his Japanese podcast (so I understand why you weren't aware of it). Had you tempered your post to reflect speculation over those photos as opposed to confirmation, I wouldn't have come off so aggressively.

Bikini Photo:

I agree it would've been better, though whether or not she's a decent character or not, that's up in the air still.
Still, i take MGS as sort of a weird comedy myself, if i were to take it seriously, i couldn't play ANY MGS.

Has Kojima commented on the weapons yet? Snake and some codec contacts always geek out on the guns and give you real-life info on them, but all the MGSV ones appear to be slightly fictionalised like Resident Evil 6's.

I'm voting on Ishmael, or the voice in Big's Boss' head. :B

Brawndo Addict, did Kojima decide to get a 3D scanner for KojiPro? And all the pictures we saw were from a few years ago?

Whoah where did you get that pic from?

It makes sense to have the Stinger. During the 19080s Afghanistan ordeal that was one of the main weapons that the US supplied the Mujahideen with.

The top left is a PSG1, fuck yea. And dat double barrell.

Looks like Big Boss will continue to use a 1911 instead of a Mk.23.

edit: Willing to bet that while there won't be as many guns as MGS4, you'll still be able to customize them with suppressors, flashlights, and whatnot.

Sorry but I'll always say she looks pretty badass because IMO she does. Putting all the "waifu" jokey stuff aside, I absolutely think she looks fearsome/cool. Shredded pants plus military gear/pouch belt with a bikini top. It's super simple and awesome. I always loved these silent badass archetypes with iconic visual designs (Kroenen in Hellboy, Jason Voorhees, etc)

I wonder if Quiet was stripped like that during torture and her name reveal in the trailer takes place right after that. I hope that isn't her default outfit

That looks straight from the FOX Engine presentation.
