Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | June 2013 | Late Ports and Late Threads

I'm super tempted to snag Hotline Miami on Vita tonight but I just have no idea how that game will control without a mouse. Might wait to hear some impressions first. If the scheme works out ok I will totally double dip.

Tonight? You mean tomorrow night?

We asked Hashimoto how he felt about the two very different approaches to localizing the game. “The localization in the Wii version was more of a direct translation while Aksys’ localization is more flavorful and closer to the Japanese text. I’m happy with the direction in this version,” Hashimoto commented.

He says "flavorful"... well, I guess that's one way to spin it.

Before: I don't like places full of humans. Such endless desire brings so much gloom.
After: I am less than fond of places where there are too many humans. Their unfulfilled desires cast an endlass pall over the whole country.
Before: There have been rumours about a monster appearing here. We shouldn't stay long.
After: The negativity generated by mortals is easily turned to evil deeds. I've heard rumours of monsters appearing in this area. We shouldn't dally here much longer.
Befor: It's not right for you to enter such a place. Forget about that girl, master.
After: I cannot bear to see you frequent such lowly places. Please forget about that harlot, otherwise I will no longer be able to assist you.
Before: Jealous, Kongiku? I'm not going there to have fun. I need to recover Momohime's soul!
After: No need for the jealousy act, Kongiku. You have nother to worry about; this is hardly the time to be screwing around. I need to find Momohime's soul.

I'd take the before in EVERY SINGLE CASE there.

Tonight? You mean tomorrow night?

No. PSN Maintenance is tomorrow.
SCEA did something right for once (we'll see) and is updating early to avoid a repeat of the last fiasco.

From what I saw on Siliconera's preview, I would be skipping every word uttered by the fox geisha and the female lead. If those are that bad to me, I can't imagine the rest is good by comparison.

Keep in mind I quit the PSOne release of FFV when I realized the localization team ran Feris's dialogue through a "talk like a pirate" translator.

Like I said in the OT, keep in mind that you're taking the conversation in that preview completely out of context. And the reason why Momohime is talking like she is is related to the story. :/

I'd take the before in EVERY SINGLE CASE there.

But the After is what the original script is like. It's your prerogative if you prefer the former, but the latter is what the character's mannerisms while talking actually are. There should ideally be no "Before" if Ignition didn't do a terrible localization job in the first place.

Context doesn't matter if I don't like the style of writing (and I don't).
Even if I knew everything that happened in the game, I'm not going to like the dialogue any better.

On one hand, I've never played it and I always wanted to. If I buy it, I can support Aksys and the Vita.

However, I do not really want to spend $35 on something where I think the re-localization (which probably added a decent amount of time to the release date for NA) is really bad.

And I'd still say "I really hate the text." and continue to think the localization was bad.
Maybe some people loved FFV where Feris talked like a pirate, because, y'know, she's supposed to be a pirate. But I loathed it and dropped the game after about 3 text boxes worth of dialogue from her (especially after having played part of the game with a fan translation which was excellent).

Hell, the same can be said for the dubs/subs for anime too. The dattebayo subs for Naruto were better than the official Viz subs and much better than any of the english dubs.

It's a gorgeous, elaborately drawn game with tons of style and it's not afraid to show off its design. Why not have a script to match? The "before" is so robotic. These characters look like they should be speaking dramatically, imo.

of course, I say that, and I'll end up skipping the text when I actually play lol

About to pull the trigger. Found a classified ad for a PS Vita for $220 still in box with a 32gb card, a 16gb card and about 3 games.

Only issue is that I kinda wanted a 3g Vita for its GPS reciever.

Been waiting to pick up one of these bad boys for a while.

Sweet deal. Buy that and don't look back. Those two mem cards alone make it worth it at that price, plus the games.

I don't think being direct is robotic, at least from the comparison shots I've seen. Hell, if they just "spiced" the old one up here and there, I doubt I'd have a problem. But from what I've read of the new translation, I do not want to read another word. So I really would be like you and skip the text. ;)

You don't want or need the 3g part. It's pretty much useless. I think most people in here don't use theirs, even if they have it.

That's a great deal. GRAB IT!

That's an incorrect comparison with FFV though. The FFV localization was bad because despite being a pirate, that's not how Faris talked in FFV at all. It was something added in "simply because Faris is a pirate", without looking at the source material. In Muramasa's case, that way of talking is what the characters are actually saying, and not some made up flavor text added for no reason.

The problem with the Ignition localizaton wasn't that it was "direct", but that it was incredibly vanilla, wrote every character the same without taking personalities or mannerisms in mind, and even left whole chunks of the game "untranslated" with romanized japanese that makes no sense to the average english speaker. Even without the flavor text, it's still a really lazy job that only delivers the bare minimum of the effort the game needed.

But I'll agree to disagree on this. The game itself is still fun and you can play it without paying the story any mind.

Amazing deal, buy it. As an owner of a 3G Vita, I have to say that you're not missing out on anything by not getting the 3G model.

I use mine to power up in Disgaea.

Most of the time, I am #TeamLessIsMore, but the first translation screams boring and made on a lazy afternoon, even if the new translation really could use some trimming.

I agree there. The after is SOMETIMES a little too much, but I think I prefer it through most of those quotes.

Agreeing to disagree is fine. No worries -- I wasn't trying to change your mind, just trying to offer my point of view and letting you know that my mind isn't going to change either.

In my opinion, it's the job of a localization effort to make the story and text translate well into another language -- including their culture. There's a bit of... discretion... that needs to be used to gauge the target audience and how well things will be received. Doing like Ignition did and succinctly translating the story into a form of Cliff's notes isn't necessarily the right approach; then again neither is directly translating everything and then trying to make it grammatically correct. From the new translation, I get the impression that the Fox Geisha could've been ripped out of a Shakespearian play and I do not enjoy whatever they did with her style of speaking -- it's like they took the old version and said "how can we make it longer and fill it with vocabulary words?"

I would wager that if the game had no localization and a team of fans translated it, much like dattebayo was subbing the Naruto episodes (and others) until it was being officially streamed with subs, I would like the translation more than either of the "official" ones, much as I liked the FFV SNES ROM translation patch version the best. I at least wish, that with a file size of 500mb, that they would've put the old Ignition localization in there and gave people a choice.

TVTropes says that there were complaints in some areas of Europe about the game using names from Arthurian legend. Don't know if it's true though.

I kinda figured as much -- that if the localization team was based out of EU that someone thought "we can't use Arthurian names because people will think it's weird or whatever".

I'd much prefer they'd kept em... would've made the game even better. Now I keep thinking of fighting Magusar, not Merlin. Fighting Merlin is much more bad ass. :P

Here in Ontario, tonight means tomorrow night. Games only become available for me (and my friend) after 5ish. Really annoying since I'm up until 1am everynight anyway.

What time zone is that? I'm EDT and I've never seen a store update go up past say, 11pm. Unless it gets delayed by days for some reason (see: Soul Sacrifice Demo release snafu).

nice thanks! aside from the graphics how does it play?? would love to hear your impressions. i think you're like the 2nd person on here to say they bought it and have proof.

Just edited that part in. From what I've played I think it's a fun game with some interesting systems. It draws some inspiration from the VC games by having some sort of crossfire when it's not your turn. You can buy new units, upgrade them, etc.

It's fun but looks like crap and controls weirdly. If this was a 3DS game it would totally pass due to the lower resolution and anormal controls but people expect different things from a console with dual analogs. It's weird to control a cursor with the right stick instead of the camera.

What I'm trying to say, it's a fun game but people have far higher expectations for a Vita game. It's a great PSP or 3DS game but a barely serviceable Vita game. Don't know if that makes sense for most of you.

I wanted all of them so I bit now. Jak 1 is so freaking good. I don't know how i went through the entire PS2 generation without playing Jak, Ratchet or Sly. What the hell was wrong with me?

I guess lucky for me I can correct those mistakes now :)
You're in for a treat when you play the others, they're all really enjoyable series. (imo)
On another note, I've got both Sly and Jak on my PS3 after a sale on PSN. I'm trying to migrate as many PS3 games as I can to the Vita to finish my backlog before the PS4 comes out. Since Jak's vita port sounds bad I've decided not to buy it but do you guys think Sly might have similar problems? I know ND did some hardcore coding for Jak but i haven't heard the same for Sly and as far as I remember, the PS3 ports were great.
If Sanzaru is be handling to the Sly 1-3 Vita ports internally then I'm not too worried going by the quality of Sly 4 Vita (even though it did suffer from some drops in certain areas)

That's a crazy deal!

Hope you enjoy your Vita after you've purchased it.

I see that Fat Princess is going to be cheap, especially with PS+. Are the online servers still working and how is the PSP port?

Come on, when's the update?

(Also, for a tad bit of irony, I was so goddamned overtired from the previous night that I thought today was Tuesday already and thought it was coming out today before I even realized it was pushed forward.)

They update yet ?

This update may be a day early, but we're still at the mercy of GCT. So relax, Vitabros. It's bets to assume that the update will go live tomorrow.

Wow, great deal on that Vita! I'm still kicking myself for not jumping on the $250 w/ $50 Amazon GC deal just before E3. I was so sure we'd see a price drop, haha.

This is a freakishly awesome deal. Buy it now.

The 3G model is pointless, don't even bother considering it.

I'd argue against Jak and Daxter HD solely because there's only one good game in it, quality of the ports aside. You're better off paying 7.99 just for the first game on PSN.

Edit: Not to mention that the Vita version of the collection is at $26.99, where the PS3 one is $20...

Vita one is portable. Portable always wins out. When I have the time to chill with my PS3, I would rather play things I can only play on it, rather than something I could run through literally anywhere else.

Yup. I've already Platinumed the PS3 version of Jak 1! Now I want it on Vita :P

Buy it!!!!!!

Life of Pixel is garbage. I deleted it after the 10th time having to do a leap of faith to an off-screen location and dying because I couldn't predict the future and know where to land. That's just bad design.

Don't buy it.

EDIT: I just noticed I'm a full-fledged NeoGAF Member now. Hell yes!
