Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS: Info Collection - Dojo, Mega Man and Trailer! 2014!

Does anyone know/suspect why these images are being released at a resolution below what the game is going to actually run at?
I was going to guess because they are Miiverse screenshots but they are a bit bigger than screenshots posted directly on to Miiverse.

Hmm. This doesn't look too great. Especially the boot clipping into his thigh and the really low detail on the trees in the back. Still, there's plenty of time left to improve things.

Pretty sure they lifted the background directly from Skyward Sword, so it's Wii-level trees in the background.

I'm really expecting the 3ds version to get released up to 6-8 months after the wii u version. It would would probably be best for both versions to focus on completing one of the versions first. It also probably be best to release the wii u version a good bit in advance of the 3ds version.

With as many people as I've heard say they're skipping the 3DS in favor of the Wii U version, releasing the 3DS first would get those people to buy the 3ds version, since they wont want to wait/be at a disadvantage when the Wii U version comes out. It's easily the best way to sell the most copies of the game. You do it in reverse, or release them at the same time, and the 3DS will sell a lot less than the Wii U version. The earlier you release the 3DS version, the more copies of it you'll sell vs the Wii U version. It'll also give them a lot of time to balance the Wii U version since they'll have player data from the 3DS version (hopefully) that they can use to find bugs/exploits/imbalance.

This. And yes, plenty of time for collisions bugs. I don't expect them to rework the backgrounds... Or they should work with Aonuma's team and want SS HD in the same time!

Edit: They sould also release HD screenshots at leats on the website... For the moment, it's the Gamepad resolution...

All kidding aside: does anyone feel similarly disconnected from the Smash series as I have always been? In fact, it is the only Nintendo franchise that I could never really get into. Somehow I'm always bothered by the animations (i.e. fighting moves simply look unnatural for many of these character), the floating stages (instead of real grounded ones), the way characters can jump through the floating platforms, the floating platforms themselves. In addition, the games somehow always feel more like fan projects than official Nintendo products to me (I still can't believe that Nintendo ever greenlit the first one to be honest - who could have imagined it?).

Sure, I'm always excited to follow their development and even to play them for a while casually. I also do admire Sakurai's level of devotion and the fact that the games become full Nintendo museums as well. But all of this only makes me more sad that I can't really get into them. I feel left out Gaf! Make me see the light!

The blue effect on Link's sword feels like it was taken directly from Skyward Sword's artwork.

Also, I can just tell this is how Link will look (but maybe more detailed) in the next Zelda for Wii U.

Don't give in to the noisy people, Sakurai. Don't give in to Geno!

If I were you, I shouldn't worry about Geno. I'm pretty sure that he wouldn't be in the game. I can only see Pac-Man and Mega Man being only two third-party characters being added to Smash. I'm not sure how I felt about Sonic's chance. :-\

For some reason my hype is deflating now, maybe it's the 2014 release.

Be happy with 2014. Before E3 announcement, there are many people pegged for 2015/2016 release date.

I have my suspicions that "runs at 1080p" means "Your Wii U can be set to 1080p and the game will still boot."

I suspected that we are getting 720p because their trailers on youtube is only up to 720, not 1080.

I don't really think Geno qualifies as a third party character. Nintendo + Square made SMRPG, and I think Nintendo probably still has rights to those characters.

Although I could have no idea of what I'm talking about.

All evidence points to this not being the case. They had to credit SE when he made a cameo in Superstar Saga.

Ah, well that's a shame. That basically nullfies the already non-existant chance that he'd make an appearance in Smash, ever. Oh well. Today is the day I stop hoping for that. Thank you, MasterBalls, for this bittersweet release I'm feeling right now.

Excited for this game, but I'm getting some weird vibes from Sakurai. Just the fact that he's mentioned both time constraints and system constraints (due to the 3DS), it makes it sound like there's a chance this could be rushed/held back by the 3DS version.

I'm pretty optimistic though, and I'm not super picky about my smash.

I think the whole SSE mode being cut is proof enough that this game is being rushed out. I was surprised it was coming out in 2014 too. Based on what Sakurai was saying during and after Kid Icarus, it seemed like we wouldn't be seeing Smash until 2015 at best.

I guess as long as the online mode is in place, it'll be all good. Hopefully somewhere down the line they'll change their minds about DLC, too. New characters and a flashed out single player mode are two things I would totally purchase.

I was surprised it was coming out in 2014 too.

You do know just how long a "2014" date can be, right? For all we know they could be aiming for holiday, and it's not like the game isn't already pretty well along.

Hell, even assuming they mean something crazy like Q1, that's still six months of development time.

The stage seems to be ripped straight out of Skyward Sword. I don't think they'll bother detailing the background too much considering how it's a moving arena. and they've got the entire Skyloft city there. It's not even new to the series. The Great Bay stage in Melee had assets taken directly from Majora's Mask (although they redid the foreground), and the Sunshine stage in Brawl reused assets from... Sunshine. I guess there's a chance that the actual locations where the arena stops might be more detailed, but I don't think they'd go and redo the entire island. Most 3DS exclusive arenas seem to be pretty heavy in reused assets too.

Single player content doesnt matter to me, this is Smash Bros! It's all about getting your friends together on your couch and playing 4 player matches all night long!!!
Countless hours of entertainment

That being said, I think the 2014 release date may be reasonable. Since making a basic adventure mode and classic mode should take much less time than SSE would have.
I won't be surprised if the game is delayed like brawl was, although I pray that it isn't.

I have my suspicions that "runs at 1080p" means "Your Wii U can be set to 1080p and the game will still boot."
I'm pretty sure this is what they actually mean.

Has this really been confirmed? But what could have been the reason that they ended the Mega Man trailer with him fighting the Yellow Devil? I thought this hinted at single player content that was more strongly tied to the history of each character?

I'd rather have this by the way than another SSE. Just give me unique gameplay challenges that suit each character, so platforming for the Mario Bros., shooting and dodging bosses for Mega Man, fast running stages for Sonic, maybe flying for Pit, vertical climbing for the Ice Climbers, you get the idea.

By the way: has Sonic been confirmed as coming back or not? I would personally love it if both he, Mega Man and Pac-Man make an appearance to further complete the "classic game icon collection". (Though I've also always wanted to see Ryu in Smash for some reason, maybe just to see how he would handle outside of Capcom's games. Arthur from GnG might also be a good fit now that I think about it, or Haggar.)

Cutting the SSE and replacing it with an adventure mode similar to Melee's would only improve the game. I actually really liked Melee's adventure mode a lot, but I couldn't stand playing through the SSE in Brawl. I'm sure most feel the same way.

I think what scared me the most was when Reggie mentioned that the Wii's "true boom" happened when Mario Kart, Smash Bros, and Wii Fit were all on the system. I feel like once they realized the Wii U wasn't selling, they knew they had to churn out these three games ASAP.

The decision to put it on 3DS baffles me. Makes no sense sales wise. Sure, when the 3DS was also struggling it was a nice proclamation to make, but now that it's doing fine, why hemorrhage one of the few key selling points of the Wii U?

I'm actually inclined to think that the Yellow Devil might be a stage hazard for Wily's Castle. Otherwise the stage seems overly bland. Considering that we have had only brief looks at these stages, we can't assume we know how they work.

They didn't actually show Mega Man fighting a Yellow Devil. They showed Mega Man shooting at one.

It was likely just clever editing of Mega Man interacting with stage hazard.

It's a flat stage that has those path-following platforms from Crash Man's stage randomly darting about.

A bit bland, I suppose, but it at least has a (vaguely) unique gimmick with that platform.

I hadn't thought of that possibility. That might indeed be completely true.

Still, I'll keep my fingers crossed for now. (How else are we ever getting a modern reimagining of classic Mega Man gameplay if not through single player Smash content - I want to believe that Sakurai will use this as an opportunity to let Mega Man shine again just as he did for Pit!)

You mean the mode almost universally hated is being cut by the guy who says he reads almost every reaction he can to his games?

Most of the criticisms seem to be centered around the setting and world, rather than the gameplay itself, though. Sakurai hasn't traditionally been the type of person to remove content. I think it's pretty safe to say that lot of people would've been happier if SSE was taking place in specific franchise worlds with appropriate enemies, etc.

To me, that is the exact opposite of how a single player mode should be. If I wanted a stage with Sonic running fast, I can play any number of Sonic games. Ditto for Mario and platforming, Mega Man and shooting, etc. There is little point in having a crossover game if you're not going to crossover the various elements.

Right now, if I'm not mistaken, the idea is to have single player stages and you unlock CG videos when you beat them. It sounds more like SSBM's single player mode, except not quite as worthless. I'd rather have a full fledged story mode.

The adventure mode in Melee was lame, it was always the same thing, it just felt like a longer classic mode.

No, what they need to do is to improve on the Single Player campaign.

A valid perspective for sure. It even might explain why my earlier statement that I've never been that fond of the Smash series holds true: I probably don't get along with crossovers that well.

My preference would be if the crossing over would be limited to the brawling, and that it would not crossover (see what I did there...sorry) into any of the special single player content. Then again, to each their own and I'm probably the last guy to be given the task to define what the next Smash should be.

Soulcalibur (especially 2 and 3) and Gundam Extreme Vs. come to mind. Good thing Sakurai has access to people who could certainly give him nice ideas on how this can be done...

I remember how Donkey Kong's back aerial completely warped his model's back in 64, and I believe Captain Falcon's forward aerial had his legs sub-model spin way more than it should have (I believe his legs did a 360 spin while his upper torso didn't move at all, or something like that), but I never cared about such things that much.

SSB64 was indeed one of those crazy experiments you think would be kept on the "crazy prototypes" pile forever. Actually replacing the game's original characters with ones from known Nintendo franchises does sound like a good move on hindsight, since people were a lot more likely to pay attention to the game coming out than if it was just a somewhat Japane-specific Sentai figthing game with a combat mechanic that hadn't been done before.

I think you should take the Smash Bros. series as a blend between a fighting game and the more whimsical and far less realistic platforming games that Nintendo fans know and love. Jump-though platforms, floating battlefields, the ability to change your trajectory in midair, transforming environments and nonsensical moves are tropes often found in platform games, among other things, and you really need to suspend your disbelief to enjoy the game's wacky antics.

Have you played the game with friends? I guess it'd help you like the game if you were actually paying more attention to the big picture (ie: people cursing over explosive containers or everybody yelling as they try to avoid a golden hammer wielder) than to the game itself, since you're unlikely to stop to analyze animations and the such when you're more interested in the fight itself and the exchanges between you and your fellow players.

No, exactly the opposite. The only thing confirmed about the new single player campaign mode is that it won't have many CG movies like SSE had. Rather than that, the CG movies will be extras separate from that mode, introducing each character and already unlocked since the start (they might be just these same pre-release movies we're seeing right now too, like Villager's intro, MM's intro, Wii Fit rainr's intro...). There's no other information about the single player aside from lack of CG movies.

I think they should just have classic mode and all stars. Adventure mode and SSE were both lame and I'd rather the time spent making those spent on making multiplayer better.

Super Mario 3D Land
Yoshi's New Island
Metroid Other M
Wii U
Wii Fit U

Did you say something about Nintendo not being THAT bad with stupid names? :P

At least those are just tacking on New or the name of the system in there (Other M is a weird title for sure though). You're really going to tell me Theatrhythm, Dissidia 012: Duodecim, and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days aren't worse? Bravely Default too.

Good post (in its entirety) and a good final point in particular. If I had any friends that played games (yes, I'm THAT unlucky and often miserable about this to boot...), I would try that as this certainly makes sense. Watching some let's plays also gave me some sense of why others enjoy it so much.

Then again, it might simply be the polygonal, 2.5D graphics themselves that make it difficult for me to see the games as having a consistent aesthetic style. Something just feels off compared to other games, even similarly wacky 2D games from the past. But maybe this is missing the point as well. Maybe the games actually strive to have little graphical consistency because they want to emphasize the crossover aspect (which again doesn't really sit right with me somehow I'm sorry to say).

As with Brawl though, I'm fully willing to at least try the new game when it comes out, let that be clear.

I suspected that we are getting 720p because their trailers on youtube is only up to 720, not 1080.

That doesn't mean much. Wind Waker HD is confirmed to be 1080p, but they only have a trailer going up to 720p on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkVt1s_ZFbw

Nintendo always releases trailers that go up to 720p.

yup

I have a hard time believing they can get a game like Smash running at 1080p/60fps when they couldn't even get NSMBU to do that...

2 things:

1) You build the game for whatever resolution you're going for. Nintendo did 720p for NSMBU. Whether it can possibly run at 1080p, who knows? They made it targeting a 720p resolution for whatever reason.

2) Namco is making this, not Nintendo.

Nah. Smash Bros actually at least attempts to have some consistent art. It's very noticeable when you look at the Melee and Braw redesigns, like giving Mario's overall textures, or now the design changes from Brawl to the new game (lighter, softer colors for Mario and Link being the most obvious example). Of course, there's still some big differences between the design styles of Mario, Link and Ness, so I guess it could be off putting.

Also, regarding your previous comments about floating platforms and characters jumping (or dropping) through them, that comes from Kirby Super Star, which was a big influence in Smash Bros' basic gameplay mechanics.

I might be a minority here, but I actually liked SSE (the idea and the gameplay... the enemies could have a little work).

my only complain about SSE was the ending... Sonic saving the day a la "Deus Ex Machina" was like reading a bad fanart from deviantart.

Yeah, Sonic felt shoe-horned into the story, though that's probably due to the fact he was included at the last minute. Otherwise, yeah, I think it would've been better if it was like Melee's Adventure Mode & took place in locations from the Nintendo universes with enemies from said games. Combine Adventure Mode & SSE and I think there's some great potential.

Subspace Emissary would have been a huge hit if a) it used classic baddies from across Nintendo instead of the baddies from Kingdom Hearts' cutting room floor and b) it was a bit more Metroidvania and a little less kill room brawler.
