Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS: Info Collection - Dojo, Mega Man and Trailer! 2014!

8. Game & Watch

Seem to be the fan favourites to get cut, though I don't think that affects their likeliness of getting in.

Absurd. He represents an era of 60 games, all by himself. He's not going anywhere.

The others aren't that unreasonable though I doubt any of them are getting cut.

Mr. G&W is a strange man/thing, and not a very popular one at that. With his two dimensional body and bizarre variety of attacks (sausages?) I can see him getting dropped form the roster to be replaced by a better know character from Nintendo's past, or maybe he's already been replaced by the somewhat odd choice of Wii Fit Trainer.

Mr.G&W is not a character from Nintendo's past, he is a representative of one of Nintendo's past systems. The fact he questions the sausages (by the way, they represent Chef) makes me believe this guy doesn't understand the character at all or simply doesn't know what a Game and Watch is. If that is true he should be stopped at all costs from writing part two lest we suffer from more of his incompetence.

An opinion piece from a Kotaku contributor on who should get cut

10. Snake
9. Ike
8. Game & Watch
7. Lucario
6. Lucas

The smash bros. fanbase always manages to surprise me with their bad opinions on who should be cut/replaced.

Jigglypuff gone, Olimar getting replaced by Alph, Red being replaced by someone from the new games and now there's someone who thinks G&W should be gone?

Jesus christ.

It's totally a Punch Out!! ring. If Little Mac isn't in the game (he is) at least we will get a PO!! stage with some sweet music.

People are rooting for freakin' Malo when we still don't have Little Mac and Andy on the game. Those two are my favourites for second-tier Nintendo franchises' characters.

Also, Mr. Game & Watch in the Top 10 of likely-cut characters? Please.

Some more choice quotes:

As the lesser known of the two Fire Emblem fighters who made it into Brawl

If I'm not mistaken FE9 and FE10 were million sellers worldwide, and Shadow Dragon was a bit of a flop in the west? I have trouble believing that Ike is somehow an unknown character.

I can see the Smash team replacing him with a different EarthBound character (Poo?)

Yes, replace the cult hit character with the final sidekick of an already playable character who took his one really notable move already.

Not a very popular one? G&W is one of the biggest fan favorite characters I know. I don't know a single person who hates G&W as a character, or wanted him to be cut.

My dad's never been big on consoles or Nintendo in particular, he always bought them for me mostly, always been a big PC gaming buff, yet even he recognized Mr. Game & Watch. I was playing Melee randomly one day, and he passed by the TV, seeing me play G&W and asked "Is that a Tricotronic (Game & Watch systems were sold here in the German-speaking region as "Tricotronic") dude? That's so cool.". I even got him to play a couple of matches with me.
Not to mention I actually grew up with the little shitty things.

Only someone born in the 90s wouldn't be able to comprehend what history Game & Watch really represents; they basically are Nintendo's birth as a video game company. It wasn't the NES or Mario or something, no, Game & Watch was the dawn of those who now make Smash.

Not a popular or important character my ass.

I think Mario will get cut, he hasn't been relevant at all this year seeing as its the year of Luigi.
Now before you then ask what he's doing in the games trailers and screens as well as many other pressing questions you should know that when it comes to Smash fans considering cutting characters we don't follow this so called "logic" half the time.

FE9 and 10 have never been listed as million sellers anywhere as far as I know. They'd need to have sold better than FE7 in the West to achieve that, and I'm pretty sure they didn't.

There are people crying for more Metal Gear Solid reps as well. It's nasty.

Yep.

Anyone who grew up in the 90s remembers playing Tiger LCD games... especially for disney properties and Star Wars (well, Star Wars is a disney property now...). those were directly inspired by Game & Watch.

Game & Watch created the handheld LCD game, was the precursor to the gameboy, and Nintendo's first major video game success. The G&W line was also more successful than Tiger's line of LCD titles.

If Mario is Nintendo's Mickey Mouse, then G&W is Nintendo's Oswald or Alice Comedies.

Mr. Game & Watch and Jigglypuff will not be cut, there are the most easiest character to include into the rooster. Mr. Game & Watch is a simple sprite The developers could put his SSBB model into the game and no one would see a difference. Jiggypuff is a ball, who is based on Kirby since SSB64.

It should also be noted that the Game and Watch led to the invention of the D-Pad. So I'm assuming this guy has only played on a 360 his whole life because that's the only reasonable explanation I can think of for something thinking a D-Pad isn't important for gaming's let along Nintendo's history.

Yeah, looking at it I'm not sure where the million number came up in my head, but I know 9 was a player's choice title at some point.

edit: or I think, anyway. Did they really sell that badly?

And there are also people who think that fourth tier Nintendo characters are better choices than Snake, too.

Smash fandom brings out the crazies.

Z-list Nintendo characters are better choices than Snake for a NINTENDO fighting game.

Hell, I would choose the liquor bottle from Gumshoe over Snake.

They're the lowest selling games of the series in Japan. They'd need very high Western numbers to make up for that.

Nah. Snake made his debut on the NES, so that gives him more credentials than you're giving him. Does he belong on the roster before Mega Man, Sonic, or Pac-Man? No, but he is a legend and a classic in a lot of the same ways those others are. Brawl benefited from his inclusion as well as Sonic's, and anyone who wants to keep all third-party characters out of the roster has a depressingly limited imagination.

Or a knowledge of all the interviews that Sakurai said that he wants to keep the third part to a minimum or else it would become Playstation All Stars =P

And with a minimum of 2 or 3 3rd party .... Sonic and PacMan >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Snake

Wasn't his debut in Metal Gear on the MSX?
Or is there a more obscure earlier game that featured snake.

He did debut on the MSX. I think Kojima has openly bashed the NES version as well

It's a Nintendo party, not a third party. Some third party characters are welcome, but they should have a history with Nintendo AND be relevant. I am sure Brawl would have bombed without Snake, the writing is on the wall, the people are tired of the game. This may be my miniscule imagination speaking... but it seems that there is a plethora of other Nintendo characters that should take priority over third party characters that only show up in the form of a cobwebbed port.

Cool. And I'd rather my Smash be filled to the brim with recognisable video game characters with important histories and cool movesets, regardless of whether they were Nintendo or not. But yeah, lets sit around hoping that Nintendo can get Pink Bob-Omb Buddy and Luvdisc and Mark from NES Open Tournament Golf (I totally looked that up).

Luckily Sakurai won't have to dig that deep. There are plenty of other big Nintendo games to pull from. Maybe Snake will be in the next Playstation All-Stars, he certainly makes more sense for that game than he does for Smash.

I agree, Snake would fit well in PS All-Stars, particularly a hypothetical PSASBR that had the polish and care put into its characters that Smash Bros has, but that doesn't mean he, as a premier recognisable video game mascot doesn't belong in the premier recognisable video game mascot crossover game. But we're just gonna go around in circles here, so I'm gonna give up.

Walking circles around Christopher Walken.

I understand why people would want one of their favorite non-Nintendo characters in the Nintendo fighting game, but that isn't the purpose, this isn't 'DC vs. Marvel', it's a Nintendo crossover game. Sakurai has already explained this many times over.

Wishing for more third party characters not only dilutes the point but it also sets people up for massive disappointment.

i thought it was King Dee Dee Dees boxing ring from kirby. it has to be
Sakurai wouldnt give away a character like that.

If it's DeDeDe's stage then people in background would be full of kirbys but it were humans instead.

I thought them just showing Bowser is odd all around. Why show a second Mario rep instead of, say, Chrom or Ness/Lucas or even a Mario rep that's branched off into it's own series like Yoshi or Wario? And then there's Wii Fit Trainer's reveal like directly after the Nintendo Direct. Why wouldn't they include her into the original trailer instead of making 2 separate trailers?

Which begs the question: If Little Mac was going to be shown, why wasn't he?

I don't know. Maybe he's not ready to be shown or he's not playable character and the rumor is false.

While this is true, Snake is an entirely different case. For him, we have a precedence, since he already has been in a Smash game, full dedicated support with a stage, music, an assist trophy, a very unique moveset, and iirc, even a pretty prominent role in the SSE. Hell, he even was in the reveal trailer for Brawl @ E3 2006 and mentioned on the box for the game.

It's likely Snake is one of the first to take the hat if there are cuts, but who knows. He's quite a popular character, and a lot of Smash fans loved him in Brawl.
That said, I would also be fine with a Famicom/Advance Wars character inheriting his moveset if he gets cut - I just really don't want his moveset to be gone. It added a really interesting playstyle to Brawl.

Is it me or does Link's hair look different in this screenshot?

Little Mac does have a chance to be in the roster this time. The boxing ring stage in the demo, having him as an assist trophy in Brawl, the Wii Punch-Out! game... Everything should count towards his inclusion... right? :(

sounds too perfect and your logic is flawless...

I guess that means he won't be in. LOL

If it was really Dedede's ring, it would be clearly showing Kirby influence. I doubt they would make a generic "realistic" boxing ring if they were going to go for a Kirby-based stage. It would have Dedede's face on the ground, little star themes all over the place, the audience would be Kirby-series characters, the little pixel-text would say "King Dedede" or something - hell even the color scheme is WAAAAAAAY to generic to be Dedede's boxing ring, Kirby's palettes are MUCH more colorful.

It's either a "Smash Bros." stage ala Battlefield, or it's a Punch Out!! stage.

If this would be DeDeDe's Stage, then his face would all around the ring. He is a self-centered, arrogant wanna-be king, this stage is much to neutral to be his ...

I'm more interested to see what make the boxing ring special. I assuming the ropes will have some bounce, but at the moment it's just a flat stage and I doubt this is going to be the Final Destination replacement.

Only a heathen wants Andy in over Sami.

Mewtwo had a unique moveset and it didn't stop the swing of the axe. And Mewtwo didn't come with any legal mumbo jumbo or potential negative promotion. Again, I understand why people would want him back, but his moveset can be gifted to someone else fairly easily. Advance Wars would be a great fit, I liked that idea as soon as I read it on this forum, a cut and suture all in one.
