This makes me very sad. Atlus is one of the best companies out there right now.
Boom. This is a THQ situation all over again. People hinting they /could/ or /are interested/ in buying something, but at the end decide not to because it's not a good investment (MegaTen, /especially/ Persona, is as niche as it goes in the States. Knowing Sony they would want to go for an international approach.)
I don't want this group to die. I /love/ MegaTen and Catherine. But think about it: What IP does Atlus have that can prove to be profitable from a worldwide perspective?

Sony has hired a lot of Atlus employees lately. They may just go ahead and buy the IPs and build a new studio.
They are not extremely wealthy but the cost for Atlus in a fire sale would be small for them.

THQ was overall losing money, despite having some games that succeeded. Atlus isn't.

Apart from Persona there are so many IPs that would certainly strengthen the Vita portofolio and the userbase.

They're definitely affected. Atlus USA is actually "Index Digital Media" and is a subsidiary of Index. Hopefully they pull through.

"Extremely wealthy" as far as companies go. They're a massive corporation. $15 million to absorb Index's debt is a drop in the bucket for them.

This is exactly like THQ.
Index corporation posted loss. "Atlus" AKA the developer/publisher branch of Index was profitable. Other branches were the cause for the loss.

Keyword in your quote is Index posted a total loss. The article is about the parent company as a whole. Index also didn't provide specifics on the cause of the losses, and now we know why.
Atlus as a division has been recognized as profitable.
Less so probably purchasing Atlus, more so getting some of the talent there. SCEJ is hunting at the moment, so there will be growth. This just came at a bad time. It's an easy acquisition should it occur though. Just depends whether it would make sense long-term.

Wasn't it said in the last thread that Sony never acquired any developer in Japan, only western ones?
They will be bought, but like everyone said, no reason that it will happen by a company already in the market.
The reality would be that Konami would have more IPs that they never intend to use again.

Not like those fraud charges can't be dealt with in time, and ATLUS has a lot more upside than anything.
Eh, while I don't want Sony to buy Atlus they do need more influence over Japan. Atlus' software arsenal is about as effective as Sony's in JP, so they'd essentially be doubling their first party software sales in JP which is something they probably need.

Sony should poach the Persona talent and start a new studio with them. Once Index goes under they should buy the rights to Persona.

Sony buying ATLUS can make sense. They need Japanese support for PS4/Vita. Atlus IPs are pretty popular in Japan.

Konami doesn't even want to make Suikoden 6, their most famous rpg franchise, that should speak volumes too.
They used to be owned by Takara. Index purchased them in 2006.
