Fighting Games Weekly | July 1-7 | Heel turns, shattered dreams, broken cages

Anyway, as I'm home from CEO now, shoutouts to:

  • The awful smell between the rooms and the venue.

Seriously, it fucking stank around the hotel exterior. I guess it's because of the construction they're doing which is I assume adding onto the event center.

Being an Orlando native, CEO was my first ever attendance to a fighting game tournament and I freakin' loved it. Playing Divekick was the tits and meeting a lot of the famous top players in person was fucking awesome.

Something I managed to get done while I was there

Aw man, I got handed a poster too and didn't think of doing that. My idea was to cut off Jebailys hair and wave it around during the last day. Couldn't find any scissors, though.

He came back against Justin's entire team with full health with his one pixel of health FAIR AND SQUARE

#buffvergil
Lets not pretend that this hasn't been done before with other characters. Not to mention Justin has done it himself with Akuma and the main reason he got a sizable advantage over PRRog was a happy birthday which he X factored. He took a gamble and it didn't pay off. Dark Vergil was actually quite controlled in the tournament until that point, Green Ace made PRRog's Dark Vergil a non factor, forcing him to play honest. And they played 15 matches.

The bigger problem at hand is the way buff stacking works in the game. Its obviously a bug/exploit in the engine where buffs like Wesker glasses, Devil Triggers and Berserker Charge increase values of XF multiplicatively as opposed to additive. Vergil just happens to be the only character to get both a damage and speed boost in his buff hyper.

Of course none of this applies to the one and only true fair and balanced character. Godlike mechanics like XF and TACs are beneath Zero.

Speaking of Jebailey, that fucking MadCatz arcade stick bag is never ever going to come down from that ceiling.

I seriously considered waiting after to see if I could convince hotel staff to grab it for me :lol.

Nah, there are tools they can use to get it down. After all, they need to change the lights at some point. Just get a hook or something and yank it off the ledge.

SO YOU'RE SAYING THERE'S A CHANCE?!

Free MadCatz bag here I come!

mindblown

but nah, I've never seen someone come back with one pixel like that. I've seen a small amount of life left, like with Justin's akuma, but not literally on the last pixel vs. a full 3 characters. Show me another one like that. Last pixel is what makes it key.

Zero is bullshit too, but I don't think he'd have nearly as easy of a time pulling that particular situation off.

A friend of mine was talking about his Divekick tournament experience afterward.

"So I got straight-up 5-0 frauded in Divekick because I didn't know the match-up... which is something I would have never thought I'd have to say about Divekick. Also made poor gem selection in retrospect, which, again, isn't something I think I should have to say about fucking Divekick."

Saltiest game.

Well, he'd know these things if they ever released the damn thing.

A little late to the discussion, but I actually have some slight faith/optimism in Arc System Works fixing the netcode for Guilty Gear. In my opinion, if they weren't going to at least do SOMETHING with it, the +R patch would be out right now along with the Vita version. Considering that the only difference between the console versions and the Vita version is that the consoles can go online, that's likely to be the reason that the patch got delayed. #Believe

I'm dying. this post is gold

I know there are a few PRRog comebacks with Wolverine against a full team and of course Phoenix comebacks where they were riding extremely low health. I can't find them because I don't remember which matches those happened but if I find them I will report back.

Here's one with Justin and Wesker. Wasn't quite magic pixel health but low health enough on Wesker where even a few Trish hits would finish him off:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aeIm05fFP8&sns=em

This one is a similar situation only its XF1 vs XF3. Ricky gets PRRog' Wolverine to the magic pixel, he lives and runs a train through Ricky's full team. This is actually a very common thing with Zero, where he OCVs team riding a magic pixel.

Anyway, as I'm home from CEO now, shoutouts to:

  • The awful smell between the rooms and the venue.
[*]Floridian tap water making me drink way more soda than I have in ages.
  • Traffic light sensors that don't activate unless you're right on the line.
  • Local drivers who don't understand this.
  • Flow of traffic on the freeway being 15 over the posted limit.
  • "World's Largest" gimmicks coupled with 50 year old exterior design.
  • Water pressure dying Sunday morning.
  • The awesome monitors they had next to the cage.
  • The booth with the Super Nintendo. Made $5 from a friend side-betting on me in Tetris.
  • The moment of camaraderie between Mr. Horsehead and the Mad Catz suiter.

as a floridian, i dont know of this ;_;

I go to tournaments all the time, moved down from Toronto area to LA for 4 months, went to WNF most weeks to train more and so on.
Lots of people who don't play go to tournaments.

I'm just messing with you because you never talk about what you play in these threads. You just rag on the games you don't like.

I was really hyped to recently learn that a local arcade called Game Galaxy Arcade (they have 3 different locations though) hosts monthly or bi-monthly tournies. It's a great place to practice and WNF happened there recently, is anyone familiar with the place? I also find it funny that I learned about it from a Battlefield 3 infomercial.

S-Kill, I think.
Ah, yeah. I was kinda salty that much of my practice time was against all these specialty characters, then got slapped with three Kick players in a row to start my pool.

I got wrecked by Baz. I'm even worse at avoiding lighting cross-ups in Divekick than I am in Marvel. :(
You gotta pressure Baz into the corner, although he can still be dangerous in that situation. Pity that the Baz player who got 5th forgot the gameplan he developed for the corner while playing Justin Wong.

It's pretty bad, man.

You in Nashville or Huntsville?

I usually don't talk about it since I've already been playing for 3-4 hours that day. I mostly come to these threads for news, and instead come in on inane discussions about who's a god in a game that's a year and a half old.

T. Hawk will always be god in any game. He may not win matches, but his opponents will get theirs in the end.

Nashville!
I'm not really familiar with the TN scene, but I do know that they've got another big tournament planned for late October with $1000 and $500 pot bonuses for various games (SF4, MvC, Injustice iirc). They've probably got a Facebook group or something if you want meet-up info or whatever. Jason Wilson (DreamTR) runs the place.

So you want this thread to be a newsreel instead of discussions about competitive gaming?

I don't get why someone would come to this thread for news.

Second match. Done with XF running and halfway gone. One of the biggest choke I have ever seen in a tourney.

Oh sweet, thanks for the info because I did not know that. I will look into finding a Facebook group because I believe I saw one when looking for the Game Galaxy Arcade Facebook page.

I love how you are able to write so much without saying anything.

Jokes aside, why wouldn't I come to a thread about discussion of current events in the fighting game community for news?

Generally speaking when something interesting does actually happen, the discussion can be quite good before it devolves to the usual 'lol yipes isn't a god anymore because he lost this match'.

I never said that I think those discussions shouldn't happen, I just don't care for them. I'm not telling anyone what I think these threads should be. I was just explaining what I, personally, got out of them.

I'm not saying you can't want what you want, but historically, these threads are not news-heavy, while several other websites are. So it's odd to come here specifically for something that the thread does not focus on.

Probably has a lot to do with gaf being where I really started going to learn about fighting games to begin with. This website just kind of feels like home, even if I'm not the most active member.

Also, thinking about it now, historically these threads were great for news. Back when USD was more active, a lot of translations of the japanese tournaments would be done by him. He'd let us know about posts from J-players, give heads up on tourney rosters and so on. Admittedly that's still in the past, but dude was on point.

Are you saying you don't like When's Marvel weekly?

So I'm wondering something, do majors allow players to use controllers other than the default pad or fight stick? I'm askin because I play with a SFxT pad for Marvel and SF4 and I'm completely used to it by now. But I've never seen anyone use anything aside from the earlier mentioned two at a major.
