Fighting Games Weekly | July 1-7 | Heel turns, shattered dreams, broken cages

So I'm wondering something, do majors allow players to use controllers other than the default pad or fight stick? I'm askin because I play with a SFxT pad for Marvel and SF4 and I'm completely used to it by now. But I've never seen anyone use anything aside from the earlier mentioned two at a major.

As long as it's wired , you will have no one stopping you. Some even entered using a keyboard

That's totally fine. The main rule is no wireless controllers that function without a USB dongle and nothing you can cheat with (turbos that don't light up and such)

It's got a turbo button that afaik doesn't light up, I've never tried it though so I'm really hoping I'm wrong :(

That sounds pretty crazy lol, it is wired though.

The SFxT turbo button will cause a little light to go off whenever it's functioning

Having Smash get some exposure into EVO and the FGC in general can be a good thing. Imagine if Reggie went to EVO to watch the Smash tourney. EVO sponsored by Nintendo! Free 3DS and Wii U's for top 8.

Just a note, they just switched up pools a lot so check on your pools again. My KOF pool got majorly changed, a bunch of names switched out.

Glad to finally see the total numbers for EVO. AE leads the way again this year with a little over 1600 now. I think that still falls short of SSF4 from EVO 2010, the year before Marvel came out so practically everybody was still playing SF4 at the time. All I remember is that people kept throwing out "over 1600" and "almost 1700" during the stream. It would be nice to have a official number just so we know exactly how many entrances the largest fighting game(or maybe even all of video games) tournament ever had.

And it looks like they moved Kazunoko out of A20 which also had Eita, Jayce, and Shinji(Alaskan Viper who has accompanied Neo to many tournaments). That would have been "the" pool of death for SF4 had they kept Kaz in it.

Also, thinking about it now, historically these threads were great for news. Back when USD was more active, a lot of translations of the japanese tournaments would be done by him. He'd let us know about posts from J-players, give heads up on tourney rosters and so on. Admittedly that's still in the past, but dude was on point.
Those were good times. I was watching way more Japanese streams when USD was around. We got robbed! At least he's getting paid for what he does now.

Well deserved. Was just reading her road to evo recap thread from a few years ago. Would people be interested in similar summaries per game for this year's thread?

Anyway, as I'm home from CEO now, shoutouts to:

  • Flow of traffic on the freeway being 15 over the posted limit.
I've lived here for 26 years and I've never seen anyone get pulled over for speeding on I-4 or any other highway. Probably why there are so many wrecks.

I don't think anyone could top something like this.

Wow! I wonder if USD pre-planned it and took notes during each tourney or what. That's pretty thorough. The scene has great video documentation, but the highlights in those videos are only pointed out in youtube comments/threads on forums and funny stream chat moments are largely buried.

Every time I see someone good with characters I'm interested in I can't make up my mind who I want to use :/

Anyway, as I'm home from CEO now, shoutouts to:

  • The awful smell between the rooms and the venue.
  • Floridian tap water making me drink way more soda than I have in ages.
  • Traffic light sensors that don't activate unless you're right on the line.
  • Local drivers who don't understand this.
  • Flow of traffic on the freeway being 15 over the posted limit.
  • "World's Largest" gimmicks coupled with 50 year old exterior design.
  • Water pressure dying Sunday morning.
  • The awesome monitors they had next to the cage.
  • The booth with the Super Nintendo. Made $5 from a friend side-betting on me in Tetris.
  • The moment of camaraderie between Mr. Horsehead and the Mad Catz suiter.
How about the positives bro?

It's pretty similar here in New York. Speed limit is 55, we all do 70. Go higher than ~75 though and you'll have the 5-0 behind you. I swear man they're like fucking ninjas hiding in bushes.

SFxT somehow hanging in there, slowly people will realize that it's the best Capcom fighter of the generation.

Barely beating KOF and Persona in attendance when you have the label of "Capcom" on your game is pretty funny, and a testament to how much damage Capcom has done to their reputation so far.

You wouldn't think it possible to straight up tarnish the SF franchise but it looks like SFxT has done the impossible.
