Edge #256: Why PS4 is your next console (Shots fired, post-DRM 180)

If the OP wants to pop this in there.

The whole Xbox One is a mess. Don Mattrick wasn't even fired, he left Microsoft by his own decision.

When Sinofsky "left" Microsoft last year, there was an immediate replacement for him. As of now, Ballmer is overseeing the Xbox division. If Mattrick was fired, Microsoft would have had a new person to take his spot already.

So at the moment, the Xbox division is being led by an absolute suit. Ballmer runs his mouth at the competition and is then scratching his head years later wondering why his products can't gain much market share. Look up his reactions to the iPhone, Android, MacBook Air, etc.. He is terrible at planning, which leaves me scratching my head as to why he is still the head of Microsoft.

Your $500 price point is staying, your mandatory Kinect is staying, and your weaker hardware is sure as hell staying. A company cannot perform a full reversal on a system like this due out in five months. This was Don's vision, and now he isn't even present to see how it will unfold in November.

You got lucky with their 180º on the DRM policies. That is all software and can easily (yes, Major Nelson, I said easily) be fixed prior to launch with a patch. Nintendo half-assed the Wii U with the firmware update that took hours to download and install, and now Microsoft will follow suit. Maybe the power of the Cloud™ will rectify this. They laugh at new innovations, and then follow them later on so they can catch up with the other guys that are already beating them to a pulp.

Sony have a much better record of supporting their console with a nice variety of content throughout its entire life. MS do not, they support their console with a nice variety of games for the first couple years then they skim support to just their heavy hitters. MS have a lot to prove.

Like I said, nobody has a crystal ball. I don't know what either company will be doing in 2016.

My point was simply that we can prattle endlessly about DRM, or RAM types, or OS footprints, or what Don Mattrick is feeling in his heart of hearts, but all that matters in the end is the games on the darn thing. On that count, the One looks very good.

Even so, I seriously doubt the gaming catalog for both systems will be vastly different apart from first parties.

Oh yeah, of course. I'm just saying I tend to choose my system based on those games, and Sony (seem to) have a lot more left to show.

Good on ya, Edge for calling shit for what it is. Seeing too many journalists speaking for this equivalency that isn't there.

The thing is that you can say that the PS3 ran down the Xbox 360 because of they lack of new exclusives (technically wrong) or because of their focus on Kinect (This is right) or because they stop supporting it (technically wrong) or lack of indie game support or whatever reason you can say. But I can just see the PS3 being outsold Month by month and year by year in the States and UK and having such a negligible lead world wide that can be reversed in one holiday season.

I don't see how that's the PS3 ramming the 360 or Microsoft dying as punishment because they forgot their roots, it seems like fanboy hyperbole.

I've said it in my last reply to you and will say it in this one. What exclusives did the 360 get this late in the generation? Does it have a swan song ala The Last Of Us?

Even so, I seriously doubt the gaming catalog for both systems will be vastly different apart from first parties.

The PS4 already has a massive advantage in downloadable-only titles, and until Microsoft changes their policies I don't see that changing.

What about the games, though? I really like what MS is doing with games for the One. More than Sony (I've had my fill of Infamous and Killzone, thanks). Obviously the situation is fluid but I think MS obviously worked very hard to get titles out there for gamers to latch onto. In the end, I don't care about what type of RAM is bolted onto the motherboard. I just want cool games. If the RAM acts as a proxy for better games, great. Let me see it. I haven't seen it yet.

I have both preordered, but I'll only keep one at most. Right now the frontrunner is the One, honestly.

The games lineup was great, there's no doubt about that. But MS have set themselves back with the PR situation they let Sony take advantage (rightly so) and the poor messaging to the core gamer. If you look at sites like WIRED etc (non-gamer sites) they're all excited for the device. Which is the polar opposite with gaming sites. Whoever steps in now to manage Xbox, needs to improve the brand image and set things right. Don done screwed up big time.

The games are there, as long they look great and perform well or close to PS4 in multiplats, there will be no issue. A choice left to the developers.

While I'm sure the case for the PS4 is strong, when I see this I see a shortsighted and desperate attempt to be provocative. MS has fucked up plenty, but I would have had just as much a problem if Edge had done this with the 360 after Sony bungled the PS3 launch. Simply for the reason there is plenty of time for them to be proven terribly wrong. I'm all for publications writing opinion pieces, but the headline may or may not haunt the shit out of them one day.

I've said it in my last reply to you and will say it in this one. What exclusives did the 360 get this late in the generation? Does it have a swan song ala The Last Of Us?

In fairness they do have Fable Anniversary out this year. I'm not commenting on the quality of the title but it's still coming.

Even so, I seriously doubt the gaming catalog for both systems will be vastly different apart from first parties.

Well I think the smaller Japanese studios are probably going to support the PS4 more than the Xbox One too. Just like the PS3.

What are these indie games on ps4 that's suppose to be system sellers? Serious question?

I think Balmer will continue to oversee the entire Xbox division until he has a good understanding as to who needs to leave the company. After he guts it, only then will a replacement be hired. That is just my guy instinct about it.

Xbox one could still reign supreme quite easily. :/

Oh I agree totally.....but you cannot deny the flow of negativity towards the Xbox One.....

Out of the gate, Its not off to a great start, which would be less of a problem if the PS4 didn't inherit so much initial good will from the press and a large group of gamers, not to mention indie developers....

The current Xbone price point only amplifies all these PlayStation 4 advantages

I would rather not judge a magazine by its cover and read the article first. I agree with their stance on this, but I don't know if I agree with their reasoning.

Agreed. The Japanese landscape is not changing at all. Xbox one will flop there. No argument. The sells from x1 will undoubtedly come from the west like it did this gen, thus, western development will be the main developers.

Realistically speaking? Not a chance.

X360 got the early release and cheaper pricetag as an advantage. But the Ps3 still managed to outsell it in the end. And Ps3 is still the most expensive console.

Now the Sony console will be the cheaper one and both consoles will be released around the same time. Playstation brand is also much more stronger across the globe.

I just don't see a scenario where the X1 will outsell the Ps4 on a worldwide basis. Especially since the X1 will be doa in Japan.

Wasn't Journey GOTY?

Journey received critical and commercial success worldwide. After its release, it became the fastest-selling game to date on PlayStation Store in both North America and Europe.[32] At the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo, prior to release, the game won awards for best download game from 1UP.com, GameSpy, and GameTrailers.[33] After publication, the game was heavily honored at end of the year awards. Journey was selected as the best game of the year by IGN and GameSpot, among others.[

I'm sure TGS will change this fact. But RIGHT now the Xbox One have more games announced for it.
This is incorrect. There's a list somewhere here that shows that PS4 actually has more titles announced on their console.

Don't forget to count indies and F2P games when you add up the games for each respective system.

Xbox one could still reign supreme quite easily. :/

In the US maybe.
But in Europe (both continental and UK), Asia, Australia and Japan the chances are between 0 to none. It will sell, no one argues that but it will be outsold severely, probably more than how much the 360 outsold the PS3 in the early days.

Huge PR win for Sony since this will be on magazine shelves for a month, plus many people going on holiday this time of year sees magazine sales rise.

Will be interesting if any other technology magazines take a stance.

Five years is a long time tech wise. Who knows what could happen by then.

Without doubt....but it is abundantly clear that that the sentiment of positivism towards Xbone is dwindling by the day it seems....

Most of the news from the Xbone reveal to now is not doing much to reverse this negative trend at all....

If it *can* be slowed down, stopped, then revesed to the point of Xbone being worldwide market leader 5 years from now, that will be a masterstroke in PR performance......I hope, for their sake they can pull it off, because they are being HAMMERED right now :/

No one knows what the next Minecraft will be. No one.

But, that's why Sony is investing heavily in the indie scene, because the cost to do so is low, yet the potential for greatness is exponentially high.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is just investing in known quantities, such as Minecraft again and Capy's new game.

Precisely, because it looks like exclusives will be far and few between next-gen, they become a much less smaller argument for each one of the consoles. That's when you start looking at other factors, such as price/size/indie friendliness/subscription benefits/power.

Looking at those factors alone, it's kinda not even debatable that the PS4 comes ahead of the Xbone.
  • $399 vs $499
  • PS4 is smaller than the Xbone
  • Sony has a stronger support for Indie developers than MS by allowing self-publishing and highlighting indie developers that need highlighting (e.g. not Notch and Minecraft)
  • PS+ have tangible gamer benefits, by coming with 1 new game every month, which Xbox Live Gold does not.
  • PS4 has faster RAM, a more powerful GPU, and more available RAM for games according to fact and very strong speculation.

Depends on what a person is interested in. Many justfiy the extra $100 of the Xbox One due to the system having better looking first year exclusives in their opinion. Some for kinect. Some for Xbox Live (& its features for next gen). Some for the media features. Some for the analog placement of the XB1 controller. Some for a mix of all of those things (or all of them period).

The Xbox One could EASILY have a price drop next year. Heck, I'm pretty certain that the reason why MS is keeping the Xbox One at $500 is to just bank in on early console buyers who are hyped.

If that happens and the PS4 stays the same price, it becomes a new ball game. Will people see the Xbox One as the better value since it has the majority of the same games PLUS kinect at the same price?

There's just so many scenarios/ways things can play out for different people over the course of the gen. Not everyone is interested in the same things and/or has the same opinion on what's the better deal for their personal interests.

So like I said, if you can't get both, buy the one that you're interested in the most and play. Should be a fun year for gamers regardless of what 2013 next gen console they get.

I don't think you're understanding the context in which "dead" was used.

The Xbox 360 is all but dead not because of the PS3 passing it in sales, but because MS shows no interest in giving it meaningful support.

No one was running down the Wii's hardware install base when Nintendo unofficially but still quite clearly pulled the plug on it several years ago before the Wii U was even announced. It was dead at that point and everything since has been a wind down.

Companies decide how long they want to support a product. Microsoft hasn't wanted to support the Xbox 360 in the way that is meaningful to core gamers (new games) for several years now while Sony has had some of their best lineups all generation here at the tail end of it. That is a first party keeping a console alive. The only reason sales come into this is that they support the argument, proving that continued software support keeps momentum going and gives the console a stronger late life push.

To that end we see that Microsoft's sales lead in the U.S. and U.K. is now suddenly not enough to off-set Sony's lead throughout the rest of Europe, Japan, and the rest of the world. This is partially due to Sony being very strong outside of those two markets and partially due to Sony tightening up the race in those two markets. Why? Because they continue to deliver compelling software.

What are these indie games on ps4 that's suppose to be system sellers? Serious question?

I think having a bigger scope of games over the course of the year is much more important than a "system seller" or two, otherwise the WiiU would have been gravy from NSMBU alone.
