Edge #256: Why PS4 is your next console (Shots fired, post-DRM 180)

Supposedly Sony London has a new core title in development, FYI, if you think their hiring targets are any indication.

Also, Evolution has absorbed staff from Liverpool and BigBig, I wouldn't be surprised if they're now big enough to have a second game in development.

And I wouldn't view what Sony Cambridge is doing as irrelevant. Being folded into GG currently has them on track to make their best looking title in quite some time.
It just reads could be, would be, should be. Wasted potential.

theres no drm

ms showed more games than sony ms showed more OS of the console..

the graphics was on par (i think the best graphic was on quantum break)

ok the price is higher for the xbox

but really seen the E3 theres no reason why the ps4 should be the ppl console...be serious cmon

i could understand if they would not change the drm ...i would be on EDGE side..but no ..in this way this is just a biased title

(also if sony is starting the gen ...better than ms eh!)

1. The terms of DRM are subject to change over time with MS.
2. Yes, MS showed more interesting IPs but most are not hitting anywhere near launch.
3. Objectively false. Was there a vast difference? No. But to claim they were on par is blatant misinformation. And the best graphics were NOT on QB. Not even close.
4. Yes... let's brush this little thing we call price over and not pay attention to it.
5. The PS4 is coming off the history of some of the best exclusive games ever made from Sony's first and second party studios. It costs $100 less and will have better performing multiplatform titles. IT is the people's console. Not subjectively... objectively.
6. Having a reasoned opinion is different from being biased.

Maybe you should cite specific parts of the article that point out how they aren't being a neutral source.

As of now Sony's console is:
1. More powerful according to all leaks and fragmented information given by MS, using apples to apples numbers directly from the manufacturer of both system's GPUs.

2. $100 cheaper at launch.

3. Smaller in design and not from a product line with the single worst launch defect the industry has seen.

4. With an updated controller that most who have used it are in love with.

5. Comes with a headset.

6. Hides fewer services behind it's pay wall, actually gives users content back in return for the pay wall via PS+.

7. Has studios like Sucker Punch, Naughty Dog, Polyphony Digital, etc. all working exclusively on it.

I mean, that's just the facts. Pretty hard to see where it requires any kind of real bias to sum up the equation as decidedly favoring Sony and that is before you include the wildly inconsistent, incoherent, and verbally incontinent "PR" we've seen from Microsoft regarding their new system.

Also, I really hope you aren't suggesting they should have bit their tongue simply to keep MS happy. That is the very problem with the games media, their unfailing willingness to toe the line and keep their traps shut if it keeps advertisers happy. Seeing a major publication like EDGE buck that trend should be a good sign to EVERY gaming enthusiast.

Ah, but MS has promised to use only "a slightly more limited set [of biometric data from Kinect]" to target ads, so they have that going for them.

You mean the one that says the policy can change at any minute and you agree to such changes.

The DRM infrastructure is already built...sitting there...waiting.

If it happens the consumers will deal with that battle when/if it comes. I am not going to not buy an Xbox One because they might do something down the road.

At first I thought that this cover was extremely ballsy. Now thinking about this, how is this different than Consumer's Choice recommending a product to its readers? I think we are so used to system wars that this automatically looks crazy to us.

Pretty much this. Going by launch lineup and fixed policy by MS it seems like a fairly easy choice, for me at least. Down the road I know that Sony will bring it with first party titles so I will get one at that point. I wish Infamous Second Son was a launch title...

It would be better if you made your decision after Tokyo Game Show. Sony has never given the official launch title list to my knowledge, and SCE president said they are going to announce more PS4 stuff (and Vita) at Gamescom. They didn't blow their load at E3 for a reason and holding their cards close appears to be a good option.

I take it because it's released on July 4th that no one has received and read an advanced copy yet.

I'd really like to know if the points made in the article made sense and backed up the cover stories claim.

How do you know? The two options they had to shows games(at their reveal and E3) they did and stayed consistent w/ the launch titles, I thought. There is always a possibility of an unannounced big time title at TGS; I personally don't think they would wait until then but I could easily be wrong and will be pleased if they do.

Ironically, it will be the casual gamers that will decide the battle. Not the hardcore ones.

Articles such as these will make the casuals more wary about their purchase. Not the hardcore gamers, because they've already decided and won't be influenced by such articles.

But it makes the publication seem as if they are siding with the core gamers, in order to build more "trust" with their readers. People could say Jim Sterling applies the same tactics (he's highly entertaining no matter how much I disagree with him). These two examples are not very different from what we see with pundits like Rachel Maddow and Glenn Beck, but instead applied to the videogame industry. Find a popular topic, side with the popular opinion of your fanbase in turn creating a mob-like mentality, and profit.

And? So MS isn't going to continue shooting themselves in the foot. Doesn't mean Sony isn't already a mile ahead and covering more ground by the minute.

ms showed more games than sony ms showed more OS of the console..
Yes, they showed everything they had in a remotely showable form. What the hell was Black Tusk's little video supposed to sell us? Or Remedy's "real time, believe us, but zero gameplay will be shown" video? Or the shocking news that Halo will be on the next Xbox at some point. Wow.

Are you choosing to ignore that Sony's first parties over the last generation collectively thrashed MS this past generation? Or that they haven't even unveiled what Naughty Dog, Sony Santa Monica, etc. have all been working on? C'mon son.

the graphics was on par (i think the best graphic was on quantum break)
Quantum Break is about as much a in-game display as the Dark Sorcerer tech demo that Quantic Dream threw together on the side, and which kicks the shit out of Quantum Break graphically.

Lets wait and see what final games look like. Fact is, by AMD's own numbers the PS4 has superior silicon.

ok the price is higher for the xbox
No shit.

but really seen the E3 theres no reason why the ps4 should be the ppl console...be serious cmon
English motherfucker do you speak it? What kind of point is this?

i could understand if they would not change the drm ...i would be on EDGE side..but no ..in this way this is just a biased title

DRM or no DRM, it doesn't change the all the other advantages Sony has built up, or the complete lack of valid counters MS has. The only way you can do a 1:1 comparison of the two and come up with an answer that favors MS is if you put massive value on the software, and even then only if you put a few select brands (Halo, Forza, etc.) on a pedestal over actual developer pedigree. That is entirely subjective, and I'd bet not something most people agree with. Otherwise the reality of the situation is massively in Sony's favor.

I'm sure Microsoft will drop marketing bombs all over the airwaves come launch and will do quite well for themselves in the handful of regions they care about as a result, but that doesn't change the fact that unless you are exceptionally enthralled by the software MS has at launch that you're getting the short end of the stick buying a XB1 over a PS4, from a straight "value in the box" standpoint.

Judging by the launch lineup, I really don't see why this would be my console of choice over the Xbox one. Apart from the price point, the One is more appealing hands down. The power will be noticeable down the road, but I'll buy it like next year after the One.

The launch lineup seems to be: Forza, Dead Rising 3, Killer Instinct and Ryse. That's all that's really out there for announced exclusive launch titles, right?

Ah, but MS has promised to use only "a slightly more limited set [of biometric data from Kinect]" to target ads, so they have that going for them.

Does that imply plus sized clothing ads? :P

Let's not attack each other for our preferences in launch lineups. Let's also not claim any one launch lineup is better than the other at this point in time - we have yet to play any of these titles.

The xbox one launch line up is alot more interesting than the ps4. Priject spark and dead rising along woth forza and ryse to give me months of enjoyment.

The tv features and kinect look to be something I use everyday .

If I just wanted to play ports this fall I would stay with the 360/pc

Dead Rising so far has only been seen chugging in the FPS department and Ryse has only (that I've seen) had negative previews.

After you've invested serious money into the platform and have your gaming friends circle established?

That's exactly what is being counted on.

So MS went back on their original idea only to implement it once people buy the system? That would be a nightmare for them; yeah, they have people that bought it but the same who only came back because they got rid of DRM would lose their shit if that happens. We can only wait and see.

I don't think we'll see any more major launch titles for PS4 but we'll definitely see some stuff for the first half of 2014 at GC and TGS. I actually can understand how some might find the XBO launch day lineup more appealing. I disagree but I do understand.

After you've invested serious money into the platform and have your gaming friends circle established?

That's exactly what is being counted on. Platform lock-in, and then the slow squeeze.
You mean embrace, extend and extinguish?

Did you just equate Rachel Maddow and Glenn Beck? Lawd, it's getting crazy in here.

You mean the one that says the policy can change at any minute and you agree to such changes.

The DRM infrastructure is already built...sitting there...waiting.

Isn't that standard ToS covering though? They have to ensure that's in there for legal reasons, doesn't necessarily mean that the DRM will return.

I have launch day preorders for both, but I'm waiting until September to see which one I cancel. Currently, I'm leaning toward PS4 due to price and the promise of greater first party based on Sony's fantastic history of delivering them in larger quantities and varieties than MS. That's just how I'm dealing with this. Good luck on your decision, both platforms will probably be good.

Dualshock-4_01.jpg

Thank you.lol

They sure didn't make it prominent.

you can do the same nitpicking bullshit to any launch lineup.

That's the point. You don't buy a console at launch because of launch titles. They are almost universally weak in comparison with the stuff that comes just a year later. If you buy a console at launch is for the promise of what's to come, while you have a few crappy titles to entertain yourself until then.

Whether that's a smart thing to do or not is a whole other discussion, but to say you should buy one console over another based on a marginally better launch lineup seems even crazier to me.

Dead Rising so far has only been seen chugging in the FPS department and Ryse has only (that I've seen) had negative previews.
There is still a few months left before launch. I wouldnt worry about frame rates and ryse wont be a launch day title. I can wait for reviews on it.

On a side note, has anyone spotted the Sony logo anywhere on the PS4 or its controller? I imagine the Sony name has taken a hit lately (outside of gaming, just look at their electronics sales) and they want to leave it off there for that reason.

It's on the front face of the playstation 4. It's also on the dualshock 4. If anything, it's more prominent than ever. You can even see it on the edge cover.

Cool, my decision is more than likely based on where my friends migrate to(I play a ton of Battlefield, sports titles with friends on 360). Exclusives are cool, and I think MS currently has the better lineup, however I feel that in the long run the PS4 will have the better 1st party titles. I will own both; I just think the PS4 will be like the PS3 was for me this gen...exclusives only.

The launch lineup seems to be: Forza, Dead Rising 3, Killer Instinct and Ryse. That's all that's really out there for announced exclusive launch titles, right?
Well, ps4 has drive club, knack, and killzone. Killzone is day one but...to each there own.

Twenty games from Sony first party in the first year. We've seen five.

you can do the same nitpicking bullshit to any launch lineup.

I didn't realize that pointing out how Double Helix hasn't made even a decent game in over a decade was nitpicking.

But fair point, I can see how someone with absolutely zero concern about who makes their games would actually be interested in what Microsoft has lined up for launch.

Pretty much this. Going by launch lineup and fixed policy by MS it seems like a fairly easy choice, for me at least. Down the road I know that Sony will bring it with first party titles so I will get one at that point. I wish Infamous Second Son was a launch title...
What about the XB1 launch lineup do you consider to be $499 appealing? I'm really curious. A handful of posters keep saying this in multiple threads and I'm just trying to figure out what day one title exactly is this massive system seller.

It just reads could be, would be, should be. Wasted potential.
It certainly doesn't look like wasted potential for Cambridge. Everything else obviously will have to wait for Gamescom for further illumination I'm sure.

At the same time, the reality throughout Europe is that eastern European studios are giving similar quality at greatly reduced cost versus their western European counterparts, so it's pretty hard to make a AAA title in the UK that will cost you $30M when you can instead hire a GG, Tarsier, etc. and make it for $20M instead. UK based studios are fighting an uphill battle until the salaries of their eastern brethren line up more closely with their own.

Hmm PS4 day 1, I love the cover. Microsoft trying to fuck the gamers up and the expect us to forget!!

Fuck you MS...my money goes to Sony

DRM fear mongering? Seriously guys? That's up there with kinect spying on you.
How so?

Three weeks ago, DRM was an essential element of the Xbox One package. This is inarguable. Now it's been removed, with a caveat that MS can change their mind on policy at any time in the future.

How is a concern that DRM may be reintroduced in the future - based on concrete evidence that this was the route they wanted to take initially - fear mongering, exactly?

I'd love to hear your take on this.

Well, ps4 has drive club, knack, and killzone. Killzone is day one but...to each there own.

My point was that neither is blowing it out of the park Day One on launch day exclusives.

I'd like to be excited about Dead Rising 3, but based on what I've seen and heard, as a fan of the series, it just makes me sad.

My point was that neither is blowing it out of the park Day One on launch day exclusives.

My stance as well. Multiplat performance on non exclusive launch titles is probably a bigger deal to me.

And admittedly, I'm way too giddy over Octodad coming to consoles on ps4. :0€

I'm really just interested in the games. I mean, I'm buying both, but why should I buy a ps4 over the One at launch?

because the exclusives will always be there down the road... after a price drop.

in the meantime you are basically relegating yourself to inferior versions of every multi-platform title (whether by a little or a lot).

unless of course you are buying those on a PC.. but for those almost exclusively gaming on a console, PS4 for exclusives and multi-plats at the start of the generation and XBONE down the road for exclusives honestly makes the most objective sense. You save the most money ($100 now, $xxx on the console and the Platinum Hits in the future), play the best versions of multi-plats and still get the XBONE exclusives down the road.
