Jay-Z's Magna Carta Holy Grail |OT| Can't Be As Bad As Kingdom Come or BP3

Born Sinner, Yeezus and MCHG aint about nothin lyrically.
Yeah, there aren't any legit themes in any of them, but at least Yeezus seems to sort of have a theme? Anger, and frustration, and a struggle to reinvent himself somehow. New Slaves in particular is some legit social commentary, IMO. Jay is just phoning this shit in.

the theme I got from Yeezus was a wealthy ninja, graspin at straws for something relevant to say. tho Im a known Ye basher, so feel free to take my shit with a grain of salt.
Born Sinner was the most dissapointing to me, Cole legit pisses me off, cause I know he can do better. Jay is whatever, his hunger is gone and Biggie isnt around to insert his foot up Jay's ass, Nas is his friend now, so I dont expect much lyrical goodness from him anymore.

phonin? This ninja hologramin this shit in. Like this ninja made an entire album talking about 3 things. Millions of dollars, Basquiat, Artsy. I'm not a Kingdom Come fan because I think it's complete garbage of an album, but at least the ninja tried to make an album about something.

I'd seriously buy the fuck outta MCHG instrumental. I'd buy 3 copies, the beats are just bananas.

I dunno why people keep saying Kanye did something crazy with his album (beat wise) he copy/pasted a lot of sounds that are more prominent in the underground. I enjoyed the album but people praising Ye a little too much.

You just answered your own question. Underground is underground for a reason. Many people are hearing these sounds for he first time.

I don't think it's just that. I think that Kanye has the ear and the ability to refine something far more than other people do. So like, you hear a lot of people making the Death Grips comparison, and I get that. However, Kanye took that and made it far more palatable and mainstream sounding while keeping that same feeling and doing his own thing. I mean, what kind of examples do you have of other stuff that's similar to what he did outside of the Death Grips comparison that gets thrown around a ton? I'd love to hear some, honestly. I've listened to a fuckton of Death Grips.

hmm true

"Black Skinhead" doesn't sample "Beautiful People" or "Personal Jesus", Yeezus doesn't sound like Death Grips, and this new Jay-Z album is worse than Watch the Throne in every way.

It doesn't technically sample it but you're crazy if you don't hear it right away.

Yeah, I get that it doesn't sample "Beautiful People" or "Rock n Roll Part 2" but sounds pretty similar. But it's not a a sample and it's not like Marilyn Manson or Gary Glitter have exclusive rights to that rhythmic pattern.

Jesus, the production on here is fucking ace, Hov's saving grace yet again. Will definitely be spinnin this in the car for a while.

yup

perhaps its the drums or my bass, but this is going on repeat for a while

lol i listen to lyrics way down the line

Two listens through, and I quite like it. Definitely better than BP3, but I'm honestly growing weary of I-made-it-I'm-successful-welp-that's-it Jay. Picasso Baby is a good example of this; sure, rap is always about bragging and aspiring to absurd levels of wealth, but coming from Jay it just sounds so phony and sneering.

Beats all through the album are hot fiyah. In that sense it's a perfect companion to Yeezus in my opinion; Yeezus is awesome with its crazy forward-thinking, non-traditional beats, whereas the beats on MCHG are forward-thinking, but still firmly in the "hip-hop" box. Overall Yeezus is a much more interesting album though.

At this point though I have no idea how a WTT2 is going to pan out. Kanye is at his angriest and highest concept right now, whereas this is about as tame and safe as hip hop can get without being Macklemore. Maybe that'll actually make WTT2 more interesting, who knows.

the sound of Black Skinhead is straight up Holy Wood era Manson shit.

Its a Manson sample

I think it's the drums from "Beautiful People." I could be wrong though.

It's not, fairly sure. It's Daft Punk live drumming.

I need a high quality instrumental version of the album asap. Production is dope as fuuuuuuck. Personally think Yeezus is still a better album but that's just my opinion.

Just finished listening will give my impressions after a second listen but I can say this is his best album since American Gangster and TIED with Yeezus for best produced albums this year. OH and HEAVEN >>>>>>>>>

Finally got the app to work. It says album downloaded. Where are the songs though? I can instantly stream and listen, but I want to listen through my home theatre setup, not on my phone. I'll buy a cd for my car within a day or two though.

Ah, nvm, found it. Only 160 kbps but I ain't complaining about free. Going to listen now. Only guy listening to new rap album super loud at 3 am on home theater system.

Why has Yeezus got this reputation for being progressive, experimental and out there? Sure if you only listened to Kanye's past albums it is. People don't like it because it's a bad record, not because they don't get Kanye's 'high brow' hip hop.

Slightly off topic but just started MCHG so I'll share my thoughts later.

I dunno, I got home and started blaring it on studio monitors, which is pretty close.

Opinions, etc. Although I wouldn't call it "high brow."

I can't get over Jay on this album though, he is just phoning it in for the majority of the album (which I expected anyway) and his delivery is just boring for the most part. The production carries the whole thing but the album feels forgettable, I don't know if it has staying power.

Awake and filled with rage, app now shows it but of course I can't download it.

My fault I guess for going to bed when shit should have been out at midnight! Either way getting it now.

cross posting from the rap cars of gaf-hop

production was good but ya'll knew that from the promo, album itself:

I haven't listened yet and obviously will but disappointed we got an uninspired Hov. I don't need Black Album Hov. But at least give me the guy who killed it on Go Crazy and Diamonds From Sierra Leone remixes. Or the Hov on American Gangster.

Not this off beat, mumbling stream of thought legend. Even Masta Ace, Busta, Rakim, etc can still bring it. Off to locate the Holy Grail.

People are feeling Part II (On The Run)? Sounds wack to me.

Tom Ford
Picasso Baby
fuckwithmeyouknowigotit
Oceans
somewhereinamerica
Crown
Heaven
Versus + Beach is Better (too short though)

And then there is shit like La Familia... :/

7/10

Lot of single potential on this album tho, I'm betting he'll push Holy Grail first, timing is right seeing as he's gonna be touring with JT.
