Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

MMO boss kills without the work, effort, anticipation, waiting, and real chance of failure to ever get a kill are worthless emotionally and are a 100% grind.

I want to like MMOs again, but they are unfeasible. Maybe with friends, but even then, I would rather play something like Borderlands or Path of the Exile where the loot is more interesting than "this same thing you already have, but +1"

Nothing really all that deeply troubling about it. Characters like Lightning are walking archetypes that if I replaced the tits with balls you couldn't tell the difference.

Goes without saying in that case, but you can't really use one of the worst examples of a female main character to support that stance.

Edit: actually, gimme someone like Ellie from the Last of Us and we might have something to work with.

Alrighty. But the writing was clearly the focus of that game. It's not entirely reasonable to expect that to be the situation every single time (nor do I think it should).

It may be because of the latter. Of the games I did play with female leads I didn't enjoy them on the onset-and the characters made them worse-such as FF13, Tomb Raider etc.

Faith from Mirrors edge was almost passable except for the fact she didn't do much talking outside of the cut scenes, and the game actually physically made me nauseous. I regret buying all 3 games.

Do you have problems playing male leads if the writing is poor? If so, then it stands to reason that it's not a gender issue. To say that not a single female lead has been good - as though the gender were the cause - is just ludicrous.

Would Beyond Good and Evil have honestly been better if the main character had a penis? The Metroid games? Portal? The issue is entirely irrelevant.

Here's one. What about games where the gender of the lead is your choice, like Mass Effect? Is playing as a male Shep inherently better than a female Shep? The writing is (largely) the same, with only the VO really differing.

I apologize if this is getting a bit prying, but I see this attitude sometimes (usually on Gamefaqs, shocker) and it genuinely perplexes me. I have noticed that in quite a few cases, it stems from misogynistic tendencies coupled with personal gender identification development. Not that I'm implying you do, but that particular problem is something that should definitely be addressed as soon as possible to prevent the individual from growing comfortable with it.

What do you think about your opinion?

1st/3rd person shooters aren't a good vehicle for storytelling. the reason half-life 2 and kane and lynch 2 work is because they're about how stupid the idea is

The save system in Dead Rising was brilliant.

Gamers have been spoiled by checkpoints and regenerating health.

Smash Bros. is a brilliant idea but horribly tedious in reality.

I will never understand people who praise Virtua Fighter and rant about how "deep" it is.

I think DoA is one of the worst fighters I've ever tried.

Wait what, how do multiple pre-orders bother you? And clothes for that matter I guess.

This gen had all sorts of new comers with their way of expressing how much they were into it. lol How we see this trend with people who never really played until graphics got real good. Then all of sudden there are tons and tons of hardcore fans. It's great for the industry and frankly I don't care. But there were so many people saying how hardcore they were when they just picked it up this generation. A lot of that stuff bugs me because the effort is a bit much. Its like why do I get judged by how American culture treats video games? It wasn't like this for a long time or at least before social media and the internet got to where it is today. It's just a mess. Those shirts of retro Link and so forth are worn by some gamers who probably deep down inside would cringe playing.

And when the industry is brought up by people who probably never played a whole lot of video games until now and talk about it because OMG there are HD graphics and movie like tones. I'm a bit casual on letting feelings like this show, but its like you feel an odd glare like this is something totally new. Like when I say that I don't play Halo anymore and people think I shouldn't play at all because I'm missing out. No, its because I know there is more to gaming than a set of next gen titles.

I don't even like commenting on series I grew up with because by god someone has made a new stereotype around it. I was young and still a gamer like a lot of people were and played a lot games too. But its just a tad much when they're making this bigger scene and when I start to get excited their views just kills it for me.

Have you played the game? The rings were in training mode. In the main game the replayability is score attack and alternate paths. There's also multiplayer which I remember being pretty fun.

Still significantly longer than other arcade style shootemup score attack games I can think of.

Yeah I played both the original and 64. I could have sworn their were rings or some kind of "get all these things and then you get the alternate path" mechanic. Probably totally wrong, its been years since i've played

I played fighting and racing games in arcades growing up and disliked most others (finishing the simpsons in like an hour was really a negative for me) so thats probably why I dont care for star fox's style. Replayability wasnt a selling point for me when I was 10, got one game, and beat it before bed time that day. Same reason I didnt like Super Metroid originally. Played the original so much, got super, saw the map, beat it the day I got it. Was pissed

I appreciate SM now but still actively dislike star fox

- Melee is better than Brawl.
- Skyrim is just a pretty open world game with nothing remotely interesting to do.
- same goes for Fallout 3.

- all the Grand Theft Auto games start out good but get boring really quickly.
- the Ninja Gaiden trilogy on NES is miles better than the Castlevania trilogy.
- there hasn't been a good JRPG in years.
- Seiken Densetsu 3 is the most repetitive, boring RPG I've ever played.

The only thing I'd consider controversial about the bolded is that you called those games pretty(unmodded, of course).

Nearly every third-person shooter is a fine example of the things wrong with videogaming. The only exception is Vanquish.
Half-Life is a terrible game that ruined the FPS genre, and almost every FPS made after the early 2000s is equally bad, if not worse.
While we're at it, most of Valve's games are average or worse. Portal is excellent, however, as is the CS franchise (and many of the other games that are simply repackaged HL1 mods, like Ricochet).
Every Bioware game made after Neverwinter Nights is bad.
The entire TES series is mediocre despite being built on a great concept (I haven't played Skyrim but I own the other four).
Every single console-based FPS is terrible, from Zero Tolerance to Goldeneye right up to the present.
I have never liked a single Rare game that I've played outside of DKC. Diddy Kong Racing sucks, their shooters suck, Battletoads sucks, Killer Instinct sucks.
Bioshock sucks. So does Uncharted.
Sleeping Dogs was a bad game despite the excellent setting.
The JRPG genre consists primarily (but not exclusively) of derivative garbage with minimal gameplay.

I think that should sufficiently alienate myself.

I agree with pretty much everything you've said.

I hate laser weapons in games. I like old fashion bullets or at least some type of futuristic ammo in mass effect. The only laser weapon i liked was the nano rifle in red faction guerrilla.

- Melee is better than Brawl.

That's actually very common and reasonable. Brawl seems to have tried WAY too hard at making everything epic, while Melee was just plain crazy and looked more violent than its predecessor giving it the T rating.

I predict SSB4 will be kind of "eh" if they try too hard again. Maybe they will be more simple on this one considering the several cuts they will make unlike Brawl that was too ambitious.

I think Final Fantasy XV is massively overhyped just because it looks different from Final Fantasy XIII. I've seen people bragging about how the characters or story will be "much better than Final Fantasy XIII's", even though that's a fucking low bar and we have no knowledge of said characters and story beyond a few blurbs. Yet because it isn't Final Fantasy XIII, people are claiming it will "revitalize the series" or other such nonsense. It's like saying Final Fantasy XII is Godly because it's so different from XIII, even though XII is still lame as hell.

Let Final Fantasy XV come out first, then claim it's the next great Final Fantasy that will make everyone suck Square Enix's dick at how Godly it is.

I slept with my sister.

Also: i had some critique on the last of us. I player it a bit more yesterday. It's getting better now :).

Half Life 2 is a satire game?

yeah man. there's a weird little disconnect between the gameplay and the narrative that's very deliberate and it's meant to highlight the general meaninglessness of your actions as a player when taken as part of the broader storyline. gordon is basically the robotic slave of the g-man with no free will. the citizens of city 17 may perceive gordon as some kind of messianic revolutionary figure but he, and yourself, are just going through the motions that were designed for him. what bioshock made overt with its would you kindly twist has been an implicit element of half-life's story for a long time.

and another thing, gordon DOES talk but what he says isn't even important enough for us to hear. he can order squadmates in the later levels and say hi to people at the beginning, but it's irrelevant to us.

In what universe does Kane and Lynch 2 "work"?

this current one, wherein it has the best story and presentation of any game this gen

I see where you're coming from, laser weapons often don't have the same feel as projectile weapons. I loved it once I got laser ammo for my machine gun in Blood Dragon tho. Very good laser weapon (prob bc it still felt like projectiles lol)

Gears of war is garbage, felt like a chore playing those games.
Uncharted 2 is friggin amazing
Xbox Live is a scam and people should quit paying for the service
The media are idiots for not calling microsoft out back in the day for charging 100 dollars for a wifi adapter, 140 dollars for a 120GB HDD. People like to give sony shit for the PS vita cards, but seem to forget microsoft did the exact same thing and still does.
edit: You can put that seagate HDD in your PS3, and microsoft still charging that much for its HDD. Disgusting

Prompted by someone saying in another thread that this game was a master piece. Here we go...

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword was horrible, terrible, bad beyond belief. Whether it's the bizarre, hideous and ugly character designs, pretty much EVERYTHING being a puzzle (even the goddamn boss doors) leaving little to no room for exploration (especially in that incredibly boring and empty sky) or other aspects that made Zelda games so special in the past, but the worst thing... by far, by very, very, very far, were the motion controls. This is THE game that turned me into a motion control hater where before I didn't mind too much. It's barely functional and extremely aggravating.

I'm actually going so far as to say that this game is CD-i levels of horrible and it damaged my faith in Nintendo and Zelda so hard that I'll probably pass on all of them for the foreseeable future unless it's a Majora's Mask remake or something.

I didn't buy a 360 for years becuase becuase MS completely lost my trust during the RROD debacle and I wasn't going to drop 2-300 quid on a box that had every chance of breaking down, so I bought PS3 > PC upgrade > 360 instead.

It shouldn't be controversial but it probably is.

i like half life, but somewhere there's another universe out there where jurassic park: trespasser was completed as intended and the fps genre is currently in a much better place

shooting people with guns is really fun and cool, especially when there's lots of blood

GTA 4 sucks.
Actually most GTA games suck.
GTA 5 looks like it's not taking itself too seriously and actually looks quite fun so I'm going to give it a chance.
This is coming from a guy who loves red dead redemption & liked Max Payne 3 btw.

PS4 (so far) has an extremely weak exclusive launch lineup. I will wait until holiday 2014 before thinking about picking one up. And no, i don't consider 1-2 year old pc games exciting.

If they actually have many more exciting launch titles that they haven't announced, i think they made a big mistake by not showing them at E3.

halo ce is fantastic and anyone who says anything else is a fucking tool.

also turn your vita upside down and feel how comfy those sticks are. current positions are shit.

metal gear 4 is awfull.

and grand theft auto games are fucking terrible.

Motion controls are very fun and another revision of the wiimote with further tech improvements would have been the best possible console for nintendo to launch right now.

Silent protagonists are perfectly acceptable and sometimes better than the alternative.

Civilization V: Gods and Kings is vastly superior to Civ IV

Bioshock 2 is much better than Bioshock 1, mainly due to improved gameplay and mechanics because 1's were awful.

Gears of War 3 was the best overall Gears game, mainly due to the refined gameplay, buffed rifles, decent net code and huge breadth of content.

Max Payne 3 is the best linear third person shooter campaign of this generation

Current Halo multiplayer's problem is not the idea of Armor Abilities or pre-game weapon selection, it's perks, weapon balance, maps and how AAs are actually implemented. The idea is fine.

While obviously not the most important factor, graphics do play a decently sized role in most genres today.

Wii Sports Resort was great for what it was attempting to accomplish and I'll still go back and play it now and then.

The Walking Dead was a simplified mess.

Just one thought.

Too many modern, adult gamers aren't really capable of play or interested in having "fun". They're mainly looking for "stimulation" and and kind of as with a drug, require more and more of it as time goes on to achieve a sufficient level of satisfaction.

There has been a concerted effort by most of the game industry for over a decade to capture and grow an audience of this nature. The consequences of this are many and varied and have filtered down through almost every aspect of the contemporary gaming landscape.

I suppose I consider this controversial in that it's not something a lot of 20-30 year old game players like hearing about, especially with how many of their peers in game development and writing think that "play" is overrated and adults have no time for such things.

Here are ALL my controversial gaming opinions:

1) The Metal Gear Solid series is boring, dull, and completely unfun. I could punch Major Nelson when he recently said "everybody loves Metal Gear".

2) State of Decay looks and animates like total garbage and is overpriced.

3) Minecraft is seriously overrated.

4) I'm sick to death of indie games being intentionally pixelated for the "retro" look when in fact it covers up for piss poor art skills and budgets.

5) Zombies are too big of a fad in games today and are overused, get more original! I love many zombie games, but enough is enough.

6) The Behemoth is also a seriously overrated producer of crummy Flash games that doesn't deserve all the attention.

7) Most machinima is an idiotic waste of time.

8) Completely tired of military shooters of any kind.

9) I have zero interest in any EA Sports title.

10) Half Life is overrated.

THERE... I've said it. 10 controversial but true personal opinions that will make me the Pariah of everyone on NeoGAF. And I only got approved yesterday!

Actually, I'll take this a step further: Super Castlevania 4 is worse than Castlevania, Castlevania III, Bloodlines, Rondo of Blood, and X68000 Castlevania (Original mode in Chronicles).

it's also worse than Castlevania: Adventure Rebirth, Order of Ecclesia and SOTN.

Armored Core is a great mecha series. I enjoyed every single game.

Gundam 0079: Side Story for Dreamcast, was the BEST combination of Mobile Suit simulation and strategy.

No game that features robots/mecha/mobiles suits has ever come close to that.

Edit: Also, Resident Evil Revelations is a DIRECT RIP OFF of Cold Fear... a Dreamcast game

The lore of half-life is extremely bloated, non-sensical, boring, and distracting post black mesa. Extremely disappointed with the direction they took the "story."

Nearly all AAA games are boring rollercoaster rides where you're just going through the motions.

The storylines in most games are horrific and sound like fan fiction.

Some opinions:

1) Sneaking around in games is dull and by association, MGS games are dull.
2) Fighting games are dull and haven't really changed much in the past 20 years.
3) Despite the fact that people say they have stagnated, Nintendo still unleashed more creativity this past gen than any other developer/publisher.
