Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS: Info Collection - Dojo, Mega Man and Trailer! 2014!

So we went from "Look at this Rush picture, Sakurai's a dog person!" to "No he's a cat man" but nobody bothered to bring up Tango?

It's obvious now, Tango's his final smash.

I was curious about how Super Smash Bros 64 was received back in the day, and found these awesome old IGN articles:

Who Would Win in a Fight? - Mario, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Link, and friends will appear in their very first fighting game.

IGN said:
Nothing is known about the style of the game, but we're expecting fast 3D graphics with "cutesy" fighting a la Virtua Fighter Kids.

Guess Who's Gonna Kick Mario's Ass? - No, it's not Metroid 64. But everyone's favorite spacegirl will star in NCL's new fighting game.

IGN said:
Luckily, Samus Aran is confirmed to be included as a playable character in the upcoming Smash Brothers fighting game (title set to change for the US release). We also found out that several Pokemon characters will be included, as well as F-Zero's Blue Falcon. Here is a rundown on the known characters so far:

  • Samus Aran (Metroid series)
  • Blue Falcon (F-Zero)
  • Mario (Mario series)
  • Luigi (Mario series)
  • Donkey Kong (Donkey Kong series)
  • Peach (Mario series)
  • Kirby (Kirby series)
  • Fox McCloud (Star Fox series)
  • Link (Legend of Zelda series)
  • Yoshi (Mario/Yoshi series)
  • Wario (Mario/Wario series)
What other characters will there be? Expect Pokemon monsters, as well as a few of the bad guys from the Nintendo titles. Our money is on Ganon/Ganondorf, Diddy, and Bowser.

Smash Hit - Nintendo's Smash Brothers goes on sale in Japan -- and disappears from the shelves in no time.

IGN said:
Japan is in a very martial mood this morning. Hot on the heels of a magnificent surprise victory by sekiwake wrestler Chiyotaikai in the Tokyo Sumo Basho, Nintendo doubles the came-from-nowhere surprise count with its new Mario fighting game, Smash Brothers.

A trip around Akihabara earlier today amply demonstrated the new fighter's popularity. Several major stores had already sold out of the game and ALL of the demo machines running the quirky, multi-level beat-em-up were occupied. This, remember, is at 11:00 am on a Monday morning¿ usually a deathly-quiet time, even in Tokyo's gaming Mecca.

i must be the only one that doesn't care about cuts.
i mean i don't particularly care if the obvious C-Tier characters are gone.

also Snake and Sonic must be gone now that MegaIdiot joined the party. i can't stomach more than two non nintendo characters.

Y'know, everyone assumes Snake will be cut, but since Sakurai has said that, so far, no Brawl characters have been cut... well, doesn't that imply that the only reason a character would be cut would be time constraints? As in, he's already gotten permission from all the shareholders for every Brawl character?

Similarly, it makes me wonder about the situation with the Pokemon characters. Since TPC's wishes are significant there, if Sakurai's already spoken with them (and he would have had to at least in part for Pikachu), wouldn't he already know if they had requested for him to replace a Pokemon? So if Lucario is cut, it won't be because he was replaced or anything like that - it will just be because he was lower on the priority list, much liek what happened to Mewtwo in Brawl.

It's not that any of the Brawl characters have not been cut. What happens is that any of the characters he wants to get it has been cut yet, from Brawl or otherwse.

I'm not sure if it's what IGN meant. I think IGN meant that Wii U characters wouldn't get cut if they have problem with implementing characters in 3DS.

It could meant for Brawl Nintendo characters, not guest characters.

Edited: Sorry about double post.

I don't think Sakurai said no Brawl characters had been cut, only that none of the currently planned characters had been cut.

Like, Mewtwo was planned for Brawl and cut, but I don't think Pichu or Dr. Mario had ever been planned for Brawl. So, let's say Toon Link wasn't planned for SSBU/3D, then that stills satisfies what Sakurai said about "no cuts yet" but is still a cut.

Looks nice, but I feel the banner should be smaller. I know GAF auto resizes now, but it does take up a lot of space and looks off balance as I only have three fighters per row.

Yeah, In fact my Dad's, Uncle's, Nephew's, Cousin's, Second Cousin's, Brother's, Sister's, Mother's, Twice Removed Sister's, Brother works at Nintendo. He told me that there's a Nintendo Direct by the end of the week.

Take with a grain of salt.

My mom and pop run a small videogame shop called Gamecube Hut so I already played smash 4.

That doesn't make any sense. Why would Sakurai focus on that issue and apologize to their fans specifically, considering how those characters meant to be in at some point but removed due to time limits won't be revealed to the public? Also, the question was about returning characters from the series in general, meanwhile the characters you mention there could very well be new ones, like quite a few of Brawl's cut characters were (Dixie, Pusle & Minon, Toon Zelda/Sheik).

He was very quick and direct saying that, no, they won't include every character that has ever been in Smash Bros, but then goes on to say that they don't want to make cuts because each character has their own fanbase, and apologizes if they're forced to make cuts. I really don't see how it makes sense that he isn't talking about returning characters in the end, but about theoretical characters that he thought about for the next game and might never have been in the series before.

"I can answer that: no. We don’t have the time to fully recreate every single character who’s been in Smash Bros at this point,"

" However, I do believe I understand that each character has its own set of fans out there who really like that character. So we’re not going to cut characters out of the way, we’re going to put in as many characters as we can, we really want to do that, because it's good for the fans and good for all of us. But in the event that we do have to cut some characters, I’d like to apologize in advance to those fans."

With Brawl, he was very direct in saying that not every character from Melee would return. His only similar statement here regarding the next game is that they won't include every character that has ever been in the series. I supposed the second statement isn't so clear, since people are posting all these different interpretations, but it's pretty clear that his answer here was different from the one he gave back during Brawl's development.

Honestly, I am with Snowden on this but there are too many translation quirks in play from the many different interviews that at this point I am not going to take much stock in any of them until we get an interview that is much more blunt on the subject.

There's gonna be a new Dojo? I thought that fell through?

For now, we wouldn't get new Dojo. My thread will be named Dojo as dedication to Brawl's Dojo. Technically we are still getting daily update which is images.

Once or twice a week, drop a name of a character, stage or item and then have a bunch of pictures of them?

Yeah, I could dig it.

Keep it at stages and characters only. I don't want to hear people bellyaching how much they were spoiled by Dojo (or SmashBros)

I don't think anyone's going to be terribly bothered by the words "STAR ROD" and then a bunch of pictures of Kirby smacking Mega Man with it.

Yeah, anyone wanting to stay clean just needs to stay away from any sort of Dojo site. In order to have any substantial amount of updates (read: enough updates to satiate the masses), Sak will have to let more go than just characters and stages.

Were people really that bothered by Sakurai apparently spoiling everything in the Dojo?

I didn't mind it. Dojo made the wait for Brawl so much fun.

Though, this is coming from someone who dislikes unlocking characters and prefers to have them all revealed before release.

The big problem with the Dojo was that it made Brawl seem REALLY underwhelming when it came out and we knew more or less everything about it already.

I personally hope they don't do a daily updates Dojo thing this time for precisely that reason. The less we know the more they can surprise us with when the game actually releases.

If they do hold back Dojo announcements, I just hope people won't bitch/complain (course they will) when the game finally comes out and they unlock all the characters only to find that their favorites didn't make it in.

Completely agree with this. You get a more enjoyable feeling of discovering something in the game that wasn't told to you beforehand and it comes to a surprise when you find/unlock it. Granted, it did a great job of hyping the game, but I think it fell victim to "too much of a good thing". Probably didn't help that the game came a month earlier in Japan, meaning the stuff that was SUPPOSE to stay secret & not mentioned on the Dojo was revealed by Japanese players discovering it.

I still wouldn't mind something like the Dojo, but maybe just a weekly thing. There was certain days/weeks where the info/updates were just really lackluster.

Hmm, I can see where people would feel underwhelmed with the full game. I wonder if it would have been just as underwhelming had it been a simultaneous worldwide release. There was still quite a bit of secret characters and stages and SSE stuff that Sakurai put under spoiler tags. Everything Sakurai went over before the Japanese release, you would've had access to right out of the box.

Once the Japanese version came out, everything was immediately spoiled and people complained like no tomorrow about the inclusion of Wolf and him having a Landmaster and how SSE wasn't all that great and etc.

There's also the tried and true argument of "why didn't you just not research the new info", but that seems trite to me especially when I know I can't resist looking at new info.
