Steins;Gate Visual Novel getting US Release on PC

Announced at Anime Expo

I've only seen the anime, so I will be getting this day one.

UPDATE: Will have the original Japanese voices.

JAST's panel comments:

"This is our top priority to get this out asap... it's almost done, all we have to do is put it together and test it and other special stuff... it should be up for preorder very soon"

So we don't have a time frame. We know they'd like to get on Steam, but they'd have to go through Greenlight, so who knows when/if that would happen.

And it's the PC version of the game.

Awesome!

I recently finished the anime, and i've been wanting to try the game... looks like I found the perfect opportunity!

This is such good news. I enjoyed it so very much. Can't recommend it enough.
Is it worth playing even though I've seen the anime? I intend on getting it either way but I'd still like to know.

Also, I hope it's dubbed. Mayuri's dubbed voice <3

I haven't seen the show, so I'm not really sure how much that covers vs. the game. The game was a really lengthy and enjoyable experience, though, and I kinda doubt the show could possibly have recreated the experience exactly, especially with the tips and Okabe's wonderful narration. EDIT: And the multiple endings and stuff.

I was hoping they'd release it on home/handheld consoles too though.

So the fan team really did join with JAST like 2 years ago... Maybe.

It used to be a big thing back when the show was airing.

I don't think the anime is required at all to enjoy this, but I've never played the VN so I can't say for certain.

I will say, however, that if you're interested in the series [and you definitely should be] to definitely check out the anime as well [in addition to the VN]. It's one of my all-time favorites, and is especially hilarious [in Japanese, with subtitles].

The dub is well-done, it's just that a few of the jokes [especially the one with Hououin Kyouma speaking English] is somewhat lost in the English dub. I've always been a sub > dub kind of person since I prefer to watch whatever it is in its original language, but I know there are some dub fans out there. They shouldn't be disappointed.

If any VN could get through Greenlight, it's Stein's. I'll be voting yes for sure.

The bigger question is whether or not JAST will even be allowed to list, given what else they sell. I will be (pleasantly) surprised if they are. I HOPE they are. But I have my doubts.

Definitely getting it, even though I have it already. It's crazy good.

Haven't watched the anime either, but I know the anime doesn't cover any alternate endings (at least 2 are crazy and completely worth it). I'm not sure if it's worth it so soon after watching, but it's definitely worth it down the line.

Everyone should play this if they get the chance. Such a great narrative. Characters are great. Endings are great.

Definitely one of the better visual novels out there.

MangaGamer put Higurashi on Greenlight. It didn't get through, but it was allowed to list.

I haven't seen the anime in a long time but I'm hyped for this! I saw at least 4 episodes so that should be good enough for me to understand what the story is about.

Can't wait to play it.

Yes. The story is a lot more fleshed out. Also, multiple endings.

Alright cool. I've played a few VNs and never like the anime version as much as the game. If that stays true, the VN version of Steins;Gate will be my favroite game of all time.

Like Aeana said, an iOS port at the very least would be great.

Also, how many endings are there? It's not just "bad endings" is it? I finished the anime and only played some of the VN but stopped.

6 endings with one of them being the "true route." The other endings aren't bad endings, but are basically side paths that are focused on a specific girl.

Between this, an official release of Saya no Uta, the announcement of a sequel to Analog, and 999's iOS port, this has to be the best two months for localized visual novels in all of history.

Agreed.

Now all we need is a localization of Danganronpa!

...I will continue to hope...

I've only played one visual novel and it has had such an impact on me that I don't want to play another one for awhile. It's the only visual novel that has a higher rating than Steins;Gate. I guess I'll wait for it when it does get released officially.
