Steins;Gate Visual Novel getting US Release on PC

So people. The game or the Anime? Any that's seen the anime and played the game can give there thoughts which they like best.

Well, this is unexpected.

Even though I've already played the fan translation and watched the anime, I'll buy this just to support them.

Oh wow, this is a nice surprise. Really enjoyed the anime (thanks, Funimation, for putting it on your YouTube account!) and now I get the chance to play the game with the hentai tensai shojo yo!

I'm gonna assume this is PC only. Oh well, depending on the price, I might get it despite not being a PC gamer.

I was seriously going to watch the anime by the end of this month. I can't believe this happened.
Got told in the JAST panel that Muramasa is still on hold while these N+ games come out

fml

Looking forward to S;G though

Planning to totally ask Aksys about Dangan Ronpa tomorrow.
Please.

I've only watched the 1st episode of the anime and tried the demo on Xbox, but I'm interested in a translated official PC game. Might consider depending on the price -- how much do officially translated VCs cost?

I would buy it on steam instantly, please!
Valve seems to be very against VNs though. I wish would pull their heads out of their asses when it comes to VNs. I love what they did to PC gaming, but these days I think they're currently doing as much harm as good.

Wow, didn't think this was coming... one of the best animes I've ever seen, so I'm really psyched for this! Nice to see it's not exclusive to steam in the US either.

Apparently it's actually 5pb that is really holding things back for now, in this case.

Not gonna get my hopes up, but seeing as Japan got it on PS3 & Vita, I would LOVE a cross-buy option on PSN. Do some of the story on PS3, then transfer my process over to my Vita & pick up where I left off.

Any chance if this does well, they might bring over those other games (Hiyoku Renri no Darling & Senkei Kousoku no Phonogram)?

I doubt it would make much difference though, looking at Higurashi's situation.

Altough I don't think VN fans should have problems with buying outside of Steam. The less people use the idiotic "no Steam = no buy" motto the better.

Hmmm, I am interested.

Whats the premise of the game?

The microwave is a time machine. Okarin proved it. The self-anointed mad scientist nuked bananas into some gelatinous version of the future.
Or maybe it was the past. Doesn’t matter. No one thought he could do it, but he did it anyway.
He sent text messages through time to people he knew. To his friends. Some of them female. Pretty. He should have been more careful.

He should have stopped.

The really cool thing about the VN over the anime(which was a fantastic adaptation) is that text messaging is a gameplay mechanic, you can answer texts and respond during the game.

The writer seems to like to takes theories, concepts, conspiracies and the likes based in science and technology and kind of gives a 'what if these are real/what people feared'. Pretty heavily based in time travel and it's consequences, don't want to go into too much to avoid spoilers though.

Edit: Beaten, though I tried to avoid going into detail. :P

I was going to get to the VN at some point, since I did like the anime, and I do tend to play translated VNs when they are based on an anime I like, then proceed to usually like the anime a lot less.

Why do people want to play VNs on Steam so badly?

I don't think they actually do. What they want is for them to become more popular in the West, which is extremely difficult without them being on Steam. They don't have big established fanbases, huge production values or strong retail presence. THey're bassicaly indie games. And for indie gaes not being on Steam is death sentence.

I wonder if Kickstarter could help. It seems to be raising awerness for smaller projects without need for Steam.

I didn't realize I could answer text messages until halfway through the game. :-(

And I hope JAST fixes the skip option. It was ridiculous that it took me two hours to skip through texts to reach the true ending.

Uhhh... how weird. Seems interesting though. Thanks.

I really hate the extremely conservative stance of some japanese VN publishers. Steins;Gate is big enough to make through Greenlight and it's an easy way to expand your market.

I wonder if Kickstarter could help. It seems to be raising awerness for smaller projects without need for Steam.

There was the Kickstarter for Romanesque that was going pretty well but it was cancelled because it was a fantranslation. I think it played a big part in JAST's decision of picking up Romanesque's license.

Is this the real reason? Most of the 'steam please' posts usually sound more self-interest driven rather than "I hope this goes on steam [so that the genre becomes more successful]" but who knows.

Are they? Why do you think so? There are VNs on Steam.
\
Well...Valve doesn't allow adult content, so that removes most of VNs. Second, I don't think there is any japanese visual novel on Steam? Analogue is quite different story. Also, putting Higurashi through Greenlight is plain disgrace.

I have exactly one request. Fix the title to remove the obvious abuse of English. Yes, it "looks cool" or whatever. I'm sure it has in-game relevance too. But I actually think fixing the title would entice more people who wouldn't normally try this kind of game one less reason to be dismissive. uguu~

Most in terms of numbers, you are probably right. But in terms of quality, it has been my experience that the best VNs I've played either don't feature adult content (Higurashi, Umineko, Ever17, Remember11, Chaos;Head) or don't lose much by dropping it (Fate, Tsukihime). There are of course a few exceptions (Saya no Uta).

Why is Analogue different? Also, putting Higurashi through Greenlight is a disgrace, since it's probably the best VN ever, but it's also entirely consistent with Valve's general policies: it's an indie game. Indie games go through Greenlight. I see no particular aversion towards VNs there.

That would certainly be nice.
(I don't imagine they'll re-dub "human is dead" though...)

It's a trademark of the series since Chaos;Head it'd be dumb to remove a unique identifer for the series and remove recognition from the anime that was released here under the original name.

That abuse of English is part of the title. VNs are niche products, anyone that's bothered by a ; is not likely to buy it.

Is there a particular reason they are reluctant to do so? A particular revenue stream they are afraid to loose by going on steam?

And? It's still silly. Valve's child-like stance on adult content wouldn't be a problem if Steam's position would be weaker. Which is one of the reasons why I hope Steam's dominance will erode more and more in the future.

Why is Analogue different?
It's not japanese made and it's project from established western indie darling. Typical VNs just can't hope to follow it's footsteps.

Valve lets plenty of indie devs skip Greenlight.

I agree with you 100% on that, but I just don't see them having any particular aversion towards VNs.

Well yeah, if you are a "special friend". Which is terrible of course, but seems totally independent of genre. Plenty of indie developers have had trouble recently, not just VNs.

Can someone explain why Steins;Gate is good? I tried it a while ago for a couple of hours but the tone of the writing and personality of the main character (and the other characters, for that matter) made me bounce right off it.

Stumpy simply doesn't understand true otaku culture where honor is a large part of it. If they do this they'll have to repent or kiss their business goodbye.

It's iconic at this point and not something you can just change. More people would be pissed than the amount of potential new buyers if it was changed.
