Yeah, FF13 was a pretty mediocre game, but at least the music was good!

Best Final Fantasy battle theme. Come at me Gaf.

No coming at you. "Blinded by Light" was simply amazing. Also helped by the fact that the battle system was the saving grace of the game. Both the battle system and the music together were amazing. I used to hate when I'd beat battles too quickly and couldn't enjoy the progression of the song.

The battle theme was catchy, but pretty much everything else didn't reach me.

I can't tell how many times I said Nobuo could've made a better job while playing.

The only thing it was missing was the classic FF victory fanfare. I'm not entirely sure why they chose to omit it for BOTH XIII and XIII-2. You would think they'd pull all the fan service stops after XIII was received so poorly.

Shame they didn't put as much effort in the gameplay though. :(

I would've included FF13-2, but I haven't played it yet, but that game has some pretty great music as well.

Dude, totally agree. Love the FFXIII soundtrack. *salute*

FFXIII though... god I can't wait til SquareEnix is officially over that obsession. what a painful generation it has been to be a FF fan.

How does XIII-2 stack up against this game? I didn't entirely dislike XIII, but was curious to see if they fixed anything for the second game.

Oh right, forgot Shimomura was on that. Well, at least it'll sound nice

and FFXIII lead scenario writer isn't there, so there's that

I'm seriously starting to wonder how much music she's actually written for XV. She's been on the project for years.

Rational people all agree that Final Fantasy IX has the best battle theme. I'll never understand how people could stand FFVII's, it just makes me really nervous. It has this aura of dread and doom all over it. IX is the perfect synthesis of classic and new FF music.

Best battle theme, but not best battle boss theme.
Best ending boss theme, too. (Grand Cross \ Dark Messanger is pure awesome)
But, honestly speaking, Battle 2 can't hold a candle to Still More Fightning.
Which, in it's un-remixed forms, can't hold a candle to Blinded by the Light.

Let's see:
Standard battle theme:
IX > XIII > XII > VIII > VII > X
Boss battle theme:
XIII > VII > VIII > X > XII > IX
Final Boss Theme:
IX > VII, and others are eclipsed too far.

They just need to demote Toriyama back down to battle director again, and never let him anywhere near the story.

The gameplay and battles are pretty good. There are some improvements over XIII, but losing a real party member for a captured monster hurts it.

And the story is so awful that it will probably piss you off even if you try to ignore it.

This thread is the last bastion for Final Fantasy 13 fans.

I have mixed feelings..but this does sorta make me want to dust it off.

Loved the game and the OST. It's my game of the gen and I have zero shame regardless of it being popular on here or not. Two of my faves...

Primarch Dysley Theme

Born Anew

I really like when recurring themes are used for dramatic effect. The penultimate boss' theme is a reworking of his main theme you hear throughout the game.

Definitely the only positive thing about the game. I recently replayed it and it was somehow an even worse experience then the first time. Once you already been threw the terrible story once there really isn't much reason to play it since the gameplay sucks. Can honestly say I disliked every party member as well.

This kind of makes me want to replay FFXIII. I've wanted to for a while, actually.

I'm one of the few that really likes the game, though.

Blinded by Light is indeed fantastic.
I used to prolong battles just so i could hear the bridge of the song, too.

The music has always been a highlight fro mainline FF games, anyway. going back all the way to the original NES releases.

One of the soundtracks I listen to on a daily basis. I think they're tired of me blasting this at work by now lol.

This same thing happened to me.

Sometimes I'd intentionally stall winning a battle just to hear a bit more.

You know a battle theme is good when you don't even want to finish it because the theme will stop.

As a whole I really liked FFXII's soundtrack. I also liked how FFXIII-2 had more experimentation going on.

After listening to The Saviour I think I'm most likely going to enjoy FFXIII-3's soundtrack as well.

FFXIII and XIII-2 have some of the best FF pieces around. Blinded by Light is the best FF battle theme hands down.

Please oh please let this topic stay on topic. The usual suspects haven't come around yet....

Blinded by Light kept me playing this game for far, far longer than I should have. I still gave up because the game didn't stop being shit, but at least I got to hear sunleth waterscape. Wonderfully happy song.

Maybe I should pick up FFXIII-2 sometime now that it's sub $20. Is the combat expanded upon? Is it still all corridors? Is there a gilgamesh fight (I will purchase for this alone :P) or chocobo minigames?

Yes. Not really. Yes. Yes.

The combat feels a bit faster and has some additions. You no longer die with leader death and 3rd party member is one of many monsters you catch. It's far more open and very non-linear in how you progress. Gilgamesh is in it as a DLC. One of the best battles in the game though. Chocobo racing is in it too.

I can't remember a single song from playing through the game.
Clicking your links barely rings a bell, I barely noticed the music when playing, generic stuff.

If you exclude the purported JRPG prerequisites of towns, explorable dungeons and world maps (and I'm by no means downplaying their absence, I consider them essential components of their forbears), then FFXIII is a wonderfully fulfilling game with awesome strategy and reward. Seriously, Stagger is fantastic. Yeah, the music is amazing.

Shame S-E thinks that we're not capable of negotiating videogame geography any more complex than an A to B straight line, though. As much as I'm impressed by and am looking forward to FFXV, they're somehow managed to strip the genre of its tenets one by one over the past decade or so.

Thank god for Mistwalker and Monolith, at least.

Perhaps my favorite battle theme in any JRPG. FFXIII did have a few things going for it. The battle system is actually pretty clever, but the game is so limited and disastrous in the end it doesn't serve much of a purpose outside of an extended tech demo for a more interesting command based battle system basis with very pretty music, very pretty graphics, and some interesting ideas in a story that went nowhere.
