Are there any advance screenings (in Toronto) I can go buy tickets to? I dont want to go after the 9th because of Ramadan ..

You have bad eyesight or something. What you are saying does not match the gif you posted in the slightest.

You know, Im gonna have to agree with Darkmakaimura- the CG in that scene in particular looks pretty damn fake and video gamey. Its very high quality looking, but it doesn't look believable in the slightest, especially the physics of them dropping/interacting with the water.

Oh man, Xia would be saddened to read this after all the work they did in creating those ..

The scene in that gif has been cut up.

You haven't played many video games have you?

I'm just saying it how it is.

I don't think it looks like video game CG, or anything like that.. the asset quality is WAY better. I just think something looks really off giving it that uncanny feeling that I normally associate with video games.

Its worth noting that when I only watch the water it looks really real, its only when I watch it with the Jaeger that it looks weird.

Yeah, I have to agree with this. I'm still going to see and probably enjoy this film, but this is not a good example of FX.

Its funny when people judge a movie based on the CG of a tiny low res gif.

Yeah, if only we had real mechs dropping into water that we could compare this to...

Don't worry, I'm seeing this in IMAX, so I'll keep a lookout for the water graphics. I don't think it'll be better than Super Mario Sunshine.

ILM tried, though.

Exactly. It looks "off" somehow. Like the lighting at certain parts, again mainly during the frontal shot with the helicopters and the side shot of the mech in the background when they're in they're being lowered in the air before it hits the water.

But, most other shots look great. The fight scenes and especially the city scenes where they're walking look fantastic.

How is this thing tracking now after the big marketing push and the twitter hype?

Still going to get kill by Adam Sandler nutshot jokes?

I'm interested in this too.

Latest tracking on July 3rd had it at 25 mil opening weekend.

That's... not good is it

I know for a lot of artists, generally saying their high end CG work "looks like a video game" is pretty damn insulting. I'd have no issues if people actually said what they meant in a more constructive manner - saying they think the composition of the models blending with the water sim is off or the lighting seems inconsistent at parts is a lot better.

That said, you're still judging a scene by a small resolution gif captured from an internet trailer that may not have had final shot renders. I'd be surprised if people still had the smae issues when seeing it on the big screen. I never was able to see finals since I was let go before the show wrapped, so I wouldn't be able to confirm it personally (not that I would be allowed to before opening night anyway).

The fact that the few people here who have seen it didn't seem to notice any of those issues should be promising at least.

I have seen trailers for this in theaters as well. The Jaegers dropping into the water looked very "off" to me. Not cheap, just "off".

I know for sure the earlier trailers didn't have any final renders, and a lot of people around the office at the time felt it wasn't up to the usual ILM standards. Things should have improved since then, but by to what degree I couldn't say.

Quick question: I've noticed that the big hood thing behind Gipsy Danger's head seems higher in some shots than in others (Notably, it's barely present on the first promotional image). Is it extendable or did they just change it in production?

I *think* it's extendable. Apparently it's meant to resemble Count Dracula's cape (an homage?) and it's use is to protect Gypsy Danger's head from damage coming from behind.

They said Gipsy Danger is supposed to resemble a gunslinger, so maybe that's the robot's ten gallon hat?

It's certainly practical; the neck joint seems like a really vulnerable spot and the head is the location of the cockpit.

Del Toro has asked the animators to stylize the water effects so that they look like a Hokusai wave.

I mean for moths sake, CGI is such a powerful tool to create realistic looking fantasy yet everyone demands realisitc looking realism.

Ok, that's pretty awesome.

I think FairyD here has that as an avatar.

It be nice if Odeon website let me check times in UK...or if it even existed on the website. I know Manchester IMAX is meant be playing it due to giving the poster away but geez the website has no times or anything.

I can book for Wolverine 3D though

that explains a lot. when you compare the most recent clips to the first 2 trailers, there is a huge difference. it looks so much better than before.
i am just pissed that i have to see this film alone. none of my friends want to see it, not even the mech/anime fans among them. they jst dont like the trailers at all, i dont blame them. the marketing here (germany) has been...not optimal.

Yeah it's not up on Cineworld yet either :(

super excited for this movie. I don't care as much about story/plot narrative as long as it has good action for these kinda of movies. Hell I really enjoyed MoS and watched it twice.

I really hope this film becomes successful.

I don't think any of it is believable, visually or otherwise. However, if the film is good enough it will suspend my disbelief long enough for me to enjoy it. Short trailers and gifs won't do that. The experience of watching the movie (hopefully) will.

Isn't the ocean still deeper than any of these mechs is tall? How are they emerging through the water?

I think there are bits of water where it meets the land where it is shallower.

If you are talking about the middle of the Pacific, rocket booster type things. Like what a jetski uses.

I really hope 3D is good, but I guess I shouldn't expect. I hate 3D and I would have liked to watch in 2D but here they only had 3D available.

all cg scenes (a big part of the film) are rendered in 3d, only the non-cg stuff is converted. it should be ok.
