At least that's been the case for me. If a show has an excellent opening track I have a pavlovian reaction to it. I get excited. Doesn't matter that I don't understand a lick of Japanese. I'm at the point where if I don't like the opening I won't watch it. I know that's ridiculous. Post some openings you think are the best and expand my horizons.

While the first opening is interesting, it sounded like everything else at the time. The second opening, however, really feels like a world gone mad, a psychological icepick to the brain.

Samurai Champloo

Anachronistic as all get out and smooth as hell. Just a really solid track that makes Samurai look and feel cool. A winner take all swag that Mugen is the heart of.

Attack on Titan

Really in a league all it's own. It has everything. Nationalism, militant fervor, spirit, intensity, a desperate cry for victory. This show's opening really caught me off guard.

Also, because I know you will, post the worst examples.
 
So that's why Death Note turned to shit halfway through.

Also explains why Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo are ten thousand light years ahead of every other anime.
 
I've seen some anime with awesome openings that are actually godawful, on the other hand some awesome anime with godawful openings.

I feel the same way. I watched Boogiepop Phantom on Anime Unleased when I was 12 just to listen to that opening (and Lain for that matter). Literally the funkiest anime opening ever and I dare you to find something funkier.
......I still have no idea what was going on in that show though.
 
It definitely is what killed the Zeta Gundam box set for me.

I ended up having to rip the discs and reburn them with the original intro and closings intact.

I've always avoided anime because it never did it for me, but the fact that I've seen the shows that feature all of the songs in the OP makes me realize how far I've fallen...

The dub version's is better anyway.

Speaking of which, I'd say Gundam is the exception to this thread's rule. :lol
 
I don't know about that theory. Attack on Titan OP is pretty good, but the anime itself is crap.

I really love the Planetes OP and I think it's one of the few OPs that do their best to highlight the show's themes.
