Remembering Ryan Davis, 1979 - 2013

to those of you responding with such vitriol towards the people asking questions or debating the future of things at giantbomb, even Ryan himself wouldnt be taking this so seriously, as a listener of 5+ years i can say that confidently

and if you were actually big fans you would know that

I know most of you do not like reddit but its nr 1 on reddit and as a recent stury says over 6% of all adults on the internet in the USA visit reddit. :O

I have not done an inch of work since I opened this thread two hours ago.

I've been reading and listening to Ryan's stuff for a decade, since whenever I started paying attention to GameSpot. Through my undergraduate, meeting my wife, my MA, moving to America, my doctorate, and during my transition back to Canada, he's been a constant. Hardly a week has gone by that I've not listened to him, watched him, or read something he's written. During tough and stressful times, his work -- especially his audio work -- has been a reliable source of comfort.

During my adult years, I have listened to and watched Ryan Davis discuss video games more than I've played video games myself. And that's by choice.

I'm not crying. But I feel extremely sad and listless. I've felt like this only once before at the death of a "stranger", when Roger Ebert died. I won't drone on about the similarities between them (they're there) or between the roles that they played in my life (they're there too). But I'm not surprised that I'm affected here.

Ryan Davis was a really talented, interesting, funny, charming guy. From the sounds of it, he was a kind, good guy too. This is tremendously sad. It's tremendously sad.

Remember that one time he was on some Gamespot podcast talking about the Vita?

He was schooling that entire room. So much charisma, such knowledge and genuine passion for gaming. Irreplaceable.

Seeing this in the comments on Giantbomb just kills me, man.

Wow, I am stunned. What a kick in the gut for everyone involved. He'll be sorely missed.

He was one of the few people in the industry who not only entertained and informed, but also inspired us over the years.

The leading causes of death for his age group are.

1. Accident (mostly cars)
2. Suicide
3. Heart Disease

We know it wasn't a car accident, seems very unlikely it was suicide as he was just married. Number 3 combined with his weight seems the most likely. I don't think it is too insensitive to speculate. It would be insensitive to say he got what he deserves, or something like that.

I also am a little surprised by the responses in this thread. This is very sad, and shocking news, but the reactions seem a little extreme. I wonder how many people actually even knew him personally? It's almost as there is a competition going on to see who can be the most distraught by this news.

My condolences for his family and friends, the people who are actually heartbroken.

You don't think it's too insensitive to speculate? Goddamn some of you people are fucking absurd.

And then you follow it up with "why are you guys so upset you never met him" type logic. Yeah okay bro, people like Giantbomb for one very easy to identify reason: they're genuine ALL THE TIME. I may not like Brad's opinion on video games but it's his opinion, it's real. They don't fake shit. Ryan and I never had the same taste in games, but we had the same passion for gaming and to see someone like that get taken as early as he has is sad to say the least.

Honestly if you don't really feel passionate about this (and you obviously don't have to) speculating on his death seems pretty fucking absurd. Not to mention classless and insensitive.

I've seen you make utterly dumb comments in other threads but this thread takes the cake.

Just picked my phone up to check GAF and this is just unbelievable news. I'm just all the way messed up in the head right now, this is just horrible. RIP duder, loved everything you did :'(

maybe thats how some people process the situation?

ive spent the last 5+ years listening to content from the site so yeah, there are a lot of things running through my head. Of course sadness is one, questions is another

this is a fucking discussion forum, so DEAL WITH IT

Couldnt disagree more. The Dudes there will rally around it. They will say to them selves "Would Ryan have wanted us to pack it in? Fuck No!"

It will make them stronger. They have to make sure what tey are doing would have made Ryan proud.

the difference is that unlike a funeral, nobody here (with a few exceptions) really knew Ryan Davis. We are not his family. We are not privy to information like "What happened?" or "How did he die?" when we just learned about his death a few short hours ago. Nobody knows how he died. There is no sense in asking at this point.

well im sure im not the only one who comes into a 45+ page topic and doesnt read every single prior post to know 100% whats going on

how do they know someone hasnt heard an answer and its buried several pages back?

when did you sign up for Neogaf, last night?

Man what ever, did you enjoy Tupac's music? Could you been heart broken that he wouldn't make anymore good music? Things like this suck and i think everyone is in a state of shock.

ive said some unkind things about ryan in the past. regardless of all that, this is super sad. the guy brought much good times to the lives of several of my friends, and i appreciate him for that. so sad to see somebody go out like this .. young, newly married, rocking it professionally, amazing days ahead.

rip ryan.

Geez...

I do work away from the computer, then go to lunch, and come back to this.

Can I go back in time, I don't like it in this Ryan Davis-less world now.

Yeah when I first saw the thread title I thought, hah, what are those GB guys up to now. Because you'd never believe it was actually true.

Every time I see this thread title now I get startled. I just can't believe it.

There aren't many people I've never met that I would say are a big part of my life. I watched GB constantly and always loved hearing what they had to say. I want to go home and watch a ton of videos but I think I'm just going to bum myself out.

Not sure if aimed at me, but I meant no vitirol. Was just confused why focus was shifting to the site rather than how people are feeling about the situation. Might have been out of place my apologies.

patrick has lost two people on the same day a year apart.

jesus what is that guy even going through right now.

hang in there, scoops.

He put a note on his Tumblr that made me tear up: http://patrickhatesformspring.tumbl...is-forever-in-our-hearts-and-everyone-else-at

It wasn’t until it was published on our web site that I realized Ryan was finally gone. Ryan was a dear friend, and I cannot fathom the loss. I’m just sitting at my computer, watching all the kind things people are saying about him, and crying. I wish I could be with the other guys today, but that will happen in due time. Giant Bomb has and continues to be the most fulfilling era of my career, and it’s because I worked with people who were not just my colleagues, but some of my best friends. Ryan was one of those people, and now I’ve lost him. See you on the other side, brother.

No, no. The site and the team's twitter accounts were hacked. Fuck this, he's not dead. I really, really wanted to at least meet him once. He was such a funny and warm guy, at least on Giantbomb, I really just wanted to meet him once.

It's a fucked up world when we lose a nice guy like Ryan, but Jeff lives on to bitch about some other game.

RIP Ryan.

WTF, dude. The guy just lost his best friend. They were like Abbot & Costello or Laurel & Hardy. It's hard to imagine one without the other. Jeff seemed to be having a hard couple of years lately, and this isn't going to help him. I hope he never sees asshat comments like yours. Dick.

What else can I say that hasn't already been said?

Loved listening to him on the Bombcast, and all of their videos. Enjoyed reading his reviews or whatever else he wrote. A genuinely amazing talent in the games media, and a genuinely funny guy. Best laugh on the internet, too. He will be dearly missed by many people, myself included. My condolences to his family, and his friends and colleagues.

RIP.

Nothing you said was out of place, and you're right to question. No need to apologize.

That's a shitty thing to say, fans of whatever can feel and express their feelings in any manner. Feeling certain things doesn't make someone a better fan or more genuine fan, that's some weird bullshit.

You are not discussing. You are saying, quite matter of factly, that the entire site will not go on, which is blatantly stupid. It has nothing to do with appropriateness, it is just completely nonsensical to think these guys will essentially quit their jobs and livelihoods because a friend and co-worker passed away.

Really distraught over this. The man has been making me laugh for years. My condolences to his family, friends, and to the gang at Giant Bomb.

Condolences to his family, friends and coworkers. It's a dark day for the industry. I've been listening to the Bombcast for years and will really miss his voice and personality.
I disagree with the notion that it's wrong to speculate on the cause of death. It's a natural question and one of the first that popped into my head, especially since he was just married and appeared to be so happy.
RIP, Ryan.

Perhaps you should take a break from the thread? This is neither the time nor the place to proclaim the death of a beloved site as we are dealing with the grief we are feeling.

People and I thought Rorie's GB account was hacked when we saw the news.

He made me laugh countless times and I really enjoyed listening to him on the Bombcast. I'm just stunned and I feel for his family, friends, and his wife.

You are disappointed someone "lives on" because they disagree with your taste in games? You seriously need some perspective.
