Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

I've had my finger on buy like 800 times. It's tough... Real tough

The low resolution should be the biggest dealbreaker for everyone. I'm not 100% satisfied with mine at the moment, mostly because of this. It's fun to walk around the demos that are out, but games are pretty much unplayable because text is impossible to read.

what text do you need to read in HL2 and Doom 3, pray tell?

:P

actually, to be fair, I had to take off my Oculus for a couple of keypad codes that were written on the far right of an email on the PDA.

I can't get the ipd calibration in TF2 to work, I'm missing the green bar in the left eye. So I haven't even been able to play HL2 without getting a headache. :(

weird. have you tried running it at 1280 x 800 with all forms of AA disabled?

That's what you need to do, Chiablo. Make your monitor resolution and the in game TF2 resolution 1280x800. First time I was doing it I knew something was wrong. Found out about the native resolution thing and that fixed it.

Definitely buying the 1080p version when its out, but the devkit is such good value for money that I'll probably keep it for multiplayer minecraft :D

I'll definitely try this out.

Any tips on getting the Verio SHOCT calibrated? I spent a good half-hour dicking with it and can't get the convergence to quite line up, the wiki doesn't fully explain how to do the convergence, only how to get the eye distance lined up.

That's weird, I thought Valve made a game update to fix this...or was the fix only for Half-life 2?

If they fixed Half-life 2, do the VR settings from the TF2 setup wizard still apply? *edit* If I'm understanding correctly the wizard settings do apply, and full resolution might be fine, but you have to reduce it only during calibration?

Mine is stuck in my state somewhere, but presumably won't be in town until tomorrow so I have TWO work days to get through. :P

calibration requires you to move two green lines. sounds like they're harder to see if you're running the game at 1920 x 1200 basically.

Past few days with the Rift has been amazing so far. Tried out all the must see demos including the VR 3d Cinema. Resolution is an issue, but someone on reddit fixed the screen door issue by using a piece of 3m privacy screen on the rift. Anyone do any real gaming with it besides source-based games?

So, I remember getting an E-mail with a link to the 4-month Unity Pro trial a few months ago. I may have deleted that E-mail? And I can't find the code in the Developer Center.

Anyone have a link to that page?

Edit: NEVER MIND GOT IT

This sounds really interesting. I wonder how well this works. Link to the reddit thread?

Total blind speculation time! Oculus Rift consumer version release date

I think we will get some hardware and design specs one year from now, with the release 3-6 months later. And of course I'm basing this off absolutely nothing.

You just need to reduce during calibration. If you have it at a higher resolution when during the calibration its all off for some reason. It thought my IPD was 32mm. I went back out, switched windows to 1280x800, switched TF2's resolution to 1280x800, then re-launched again and when I did the calibration it was fine.

I expect the official unveiling of the consumer version between GDC and E3 next year, if not during one of those events, with the release being Fall 2014.

I have completed Doom 3 and Half Life 2 in the rift. Both were amazing experiences.

I just finished reading book The Martian by Andy Weir, and I have to say... this awesome adventure would be incredible if someone adapted it in VR. Absolutely stellar book, with linear plot that is perfect for experimental VR videogame adaptation.

Plot -
[After a sudden storm, 3rd human exploratory mission leaves Mars, unknowingly leaving behind one crew-member that was presumed dead. He awakes wounded, left alone on a red planet, and starts forming a plan for long term survival.]

Anyone have experience running Duplicated vs Extended Desktop with the Rift? There's a post on Reddit talking about how setting your monitor to duplicated will cause extra latency/tearing. I was under the impression that we were supposed to use duplicated as per the instructions but I did notice some tearing on my Rift on my first go.

EDIT: Also, wanted to add, don't forget, to turn off Windows Aero, as it adds at least a frame of latency (page5)

you just need to make sure the rift is set to be the primary display of the cloned displays you won't have any issues.

Don't worry too much. Just take it easy and stop when you start feeling sick. You'll get your VR legs soon enough.
Extremely true. 80%+ of people who have tried it need to give it up after fifteen minutes, tops. Then they need to rest for at least a few hours.

The second time you'll get farther, and after the fourth time or so it isn't really an issue.

Do I need to make a change on my monitor in order to get it to work? I'm having some issues. When I try to pull up a demo, my computer screen shows the demo but the rift shows my desktop background and nothing else. This is really strange. Any ideas or am I missing a step?

Sounds like you are set to extend desktop and the monitor is the primary desktop? Try setting the Rift as the primary display.

Thanks for that. I try setting it as the primary display however I just get a blank screen on my monitor and I see only a part of my desktop through the rift and I can see my mouse moving around. It's not putting up the 2 screens on the monitor itself as well. All my icons seem to disappear

How long did it take for Oculus to charge everyone else after ordering? It's been a day since I made the order and the funds are still in my account.

I have to be missing something. The demos show up on my screen and it detects the movement of the rift but the screen just doesn't show up inside the rift. I can't figure out why it'd be displaying my desktop background instead

I had the same issue.

Go to your graphic control panel. And then click to "set up multiple display". See if rift and other monitor are available. Go to your rift screen (will be marked 1 or 2). Then right click on mouse and pick cloning. Then apply.

This is with nividia. Basically, I used cloning. and then it works

I'm going to vomit on myself. It was amazingly fun though. Does HL2 still need calibration? I didn't calibrate it or anything, it was my favorite buy also made me the most motion sick.

I think you need to calibrate with TF2 and then copy the settings over, but I don't have a good link to a guide. I'd love such a link myself since I might get to try it tomorrow.

With that I think my life is complete. The scale is amazing.

I'm happy with no sickness from the day one usage. Running backwards weirds me out though. Can't play more, have to sleep, sigh.

This worked! Thanks so much. I will need to play around with my settings. Things are pretty blurry and I'm thinking its due to the eye pieces I have in. The default ones are A but I have a bad astigmatism in my left eye
