Fighting Games Weekly | July 8-14 | All roads lead here

Aw man, I'm not fancy enough to create a new thread about this :( Was hoping to drag in some people who didn't know about it.

Anyway, tonight Jimmy C and I are gonna have our annual pre-Evo show. We'll be talking about what to trends to watch for, players and characters to keep an eye on, big storylines, that kind of thing.

We'll try to do it for each game, but obviously we have our own biases. Between us we basically have SF4, Marvel 3, Injustice, SFxT, and Melee covered, but we don't know as much about KoF13, TTT2, P4A, and MK9 as we should if we're gonna do this right.

So if'n any of you have good links or info about what to watch for in those games, it'd be very much appreciated!

Sounds great, will watch!

I don't see why the moneyhat claim is such a big deal though. Missing the opportunity to demonstrates that Warner Bros is getting involved in the competitive community while Capcom didn't have the stomach to moneyhat SFxT a second time.
But Capcom DID money hat SFxT for the second time. They put in just enough money to get the game into EVO.

Aww shit... I love pre-EVO prediction shows.

One of us can create a thread if you want to talk about it o here.

The lateness doesn't phase me all that much. SG's top 8 will be done in a flash. What hurts is being streamed during MvC3's semis.

Oh damn I didn't see that. I only looked to find SG's broadcast :(. There's some hope that people will come early to see Divekick and boost the number a little.

Re: P4A, XiePlus is doing a video series about some Japanese players who are coming over to play.

Here's a 'Pre-Tournament Speculation/Discussion' video with him and Stunedge. The player videos are in the description.

Man, that schedule. I haven't been paying much attention to the FGC lately, but that makes me even less interested. Guess ill just keep playing and not paying attention.

Jailhouse posting about VxG and why he isn't going. For reference, he was promised a trip for SFxT because he had been doing the qualifiers at NLBC.

Asking for passport information one week before the event is sort of bad but I think somewhere along the line either Rolando forgot to tell Triforce to ask Jailhouse about the passport information or Triforce forgot.

Either way, I for one am SHOCKED!

You have to look at the stream scheduling from a different perspective. NRS was cool enough to put their time, money and effort into the community so they deserve as much stream time as they can get. They listen to opinions, tweets, stream happenings, crying about characters, etc, and they have been the best fighting game developer in terms of catering to the needs of their fanbase. People are directing the hate towards the wrong people. Mr.Wiz and the Cannon bros. are just doing what is expected. If anything, we should all hate on Namco and Capcom (namely NOJ and COJ) for not doing what they can/all they can to support the event.

Sucks about the stream schedule. I think all the games should of had their spotlight on the final day.
You want the EVO staff to die of heart attacks? Too many games.
Oh damn I didn't see that. I only looked to find SG's broadcast :(. There's some hope that people will come early to see Divekick and boost the number a little.
Screw the numbers unless they got dollar signs next to them. I stopped worrying about stream slots and viewer numbers a while back during the IGG campaign and the announcement of the PC version. We got what we need. Check out our five new DLC characters, dawg.

I also don't understand why people are suddenly up in arms about moneyhats. During CEO capcom had their own stream and I didn't see anyone complaining about it. People have mentioned that the anime game community is trying to get their own offstream going. If WB wants to pour money into the FGC, good for them.

What?! Marvel is the least janky game on the scene!

I know you were rusty, I was just inquiring into the adaptation rate.

The movement in marvel is janky as fuck input wise is what I'm referring to, it doesn't seem like it cause the game is so fast. But to me it's just hyperspeed jank. Dr.Doom is the lord of Marvel Jank though.

Characters like Dorm and Morrigan are on the opposite sides of the spectrum. But they some of the few special cases

I think fighting games are fucking up my left arm or something. Just got done playing SF4 for a few hours and when I went to use my left arm for other stuff it felt really weak and weird and messed up in general. This isn't the first time it's felt messed up but it was especially profound this time around. I don't play fighting games as much as I used to since I have a lot more responsibilities IRL nowadays, but I used to sometimes go like 6+ hours playing fighting games. I wonder if I've got some kind of repetitive stress injury from playing on stick for so many years or something.

Try getting a stand for your stick and stand while playing. Humans weren't meant to sit for long hours at a time. Everything is connected inside your body, and when there's stress on one part, it will transfer, especially when you're hunched over and in an unnatural position.

I went in thinking this was going to be some big blow up but it wasn't even a whimper......guys wins an all expense paid trip out the US and doesn't immediately renew his passport??

/C'mon Son.

Passport renewal is a hundred dollars and last for 10 years.....C'MON!!

Yeah the way it's set up this year seems to keep east coasters in mind. Last year was horrible for me, I barely made it to the end of AE. This year, assuming things actually stay on schedule, will assure things will be wrapped up at least by 12:30 or 1 AM instead of the 2 to 3 AM like last year.

That is fair and Kadey had good thoughts on it too. To me the difference from something like CEO is in having things like the evo donation drive and other events like calling out communities to attend (which was mostly delivered).

That builds up a certain amount of expectation that I think a bit more trasparency or better communication could address.

So.
About 3 or so months ago I was watching NLBC and saw that the VideoxGames was holding a special ranbat in SFXT to allow one lucky winner to get a free all expenses paid trip to St. Maarten along with Hotel fee, Venue fee, etc.

VXG sponsored players/anyone who was already booked at the event were not included..so basically, the prize was to go to the player who gained the most points discounting all the regular top players (dieminion, sanford kelly, chris g, dragongod, etc)

In the end, I supposedly ended up winning the ranbat. The night I 'won' the ranbat, Triforce pulled me over and we exchanged phone numbers and said that he would be contacting me shortly with information about where i could pick up my prizes.

This was June 5th.

June 6th -
Hello,

Hi triforce, i have not as of yet received an email from rolando in regards to vxg, he also did not respond to my tweet. please update me as vxg is coming up soon

-sent numerous tweets and emails to vxg's twitter, rolandos twitter, triforce's twitter, and vxg's official email asking for an update.

June 23
'Hello,

I was told to contact you at this email address by Jamessmk as I have not been contacted yet. Triforce supposedly forwarded you my contact information about a month ago.

In any case, I won the SFXT ranbat at next level. What do I have to do to receive my tickets?

Thank you,
Jailhouse

Following up again. Triforce informed me last Wednesday that you were going to "buy the tickets in bulk" or something to that effect. Can you please update me?

-jul 3
Hello,
at this point its cutting it extremely close to vxg and i have still not received any concrete info. let me know if im actually going to get the ranbat prize or not as i will need to request time off from work.

-I'll get in contact with him today with information. are you going to next level?

-not today.

july 8

-received email response from rolando::

"ello miochael,

sorry for the delay. Tiockets are being pruchased in order of the qualifiers and this is the last qualifier.

We urgently need the following from you:

Your full name
A copy of your passport
Date of birth

The st maarten tourism board will purchase your tickets a few days after we reeceive this information.

Regards

Rolando"

So there it is. I will not be attending VxG for the following reasons:

1). I would have renewed my passport immediately following my win if I was given concrete information in regards to the prize. Contacting me 1 week before the event asking me for a scan of my passport is not acceptable and is entirely unprofessional. Rush renewal of a passport is not possible without concrete travel plans, or ticket scans.
2). The whole ordeal seems shady and underground.
3). I don't like being ignored by people that are supposed to be pillars of the 'Fighting Game Community'

I wonder what happened? Is it because Tekken and SC5 "lost steam"?

Those games haven't exactly lost steam. SCV did better than MK9 @ last EVO (entrants-wise). Tekken had 500 players for Master Cup and 219 at Final Round. Namco, I presume, is just supporting tournaments where they know their games will be prioritized. EVO is largely 2D-centric and isn't really a place where Namco can shine. They are one of the few devs largely focused on 3D fighters and EVO's got 8/9 games that are 2D. I assume Namco will be supporting Filthy Cup, though.

he should have had his passport before though jmo

True but it would seem the tickets weren't ready anyway and no info about it was being given to Jailhouse about what was going on. Should get the passport regardless but it shouldn't get in the way of communicating what's going on and getting the stuff ready.

Sounds like it got someone to start talking to Jailhouse though. =P

to be honest i personally thought the vxg thing wasnt gonna be succesful because the fgc dont have passports I remember the samsung or was it lg cup street fighter korea thing that wolfkrone won but didnt go and then like the top 12 winners didnt go either because they didnt have passports or something so mike ross won it by being like 13th

also wolverine/doom/vergil is not a 10/10 team.
The team is fully optimized for Wolverine on point with the best beam in the game and Rapid Slash which is both great as a mix up tool and combo extension. Doom works well with Rapid Slash in terms of mix ups, keep away and gets full combo off of his THC with Vergil as well as guaranteed TODs. Vergil also makes great use of the Plasma Beam but more importantly is in the anchor position.

And then you add the fact that this team features Derp Kick, YOLO Foot Dive and Gilga Helm Breakah all in one team for MAXIMUM DERP. Most top players consider this an end game team and I agree. The format for the rating was that end game team means it's 10/10 as it's very difficult to improve on what this team offers specifically.

I don't blame Namco.

They have supported EVO before for years. Just last year, they took up (or bought, I suppose) two/three minutes of stream time before the UMvC3 finals to show a TTT2 trailer and people were all up in arms boo-ing the game and getting restless. This trailer in specific. I wouldn't support EVO after that either. Part of the EVO community's (stream monsters and some people in general including people on neogaf) reactions are often negative towards Tekken anyway most often consisting of complaining about Tekken taking too long or being boring to watch. If I was head at Namco, I would be looking at alternative areas to promote my game instead of places where I know the game garners widespread hate for no reason from people that haven't even played the game or have any clue of how its mechanics work.

IMMEDIATELY after EVO Infrit was playing like shit and has been ever since. At least leading up to EVO he was placing well in the tournaments he was going to and TRB. He was legitimately in contention for Top 5 in SoCal. No way he even deserves B tier today.

I wonder what surprises we'll see in Top 8 this time around, and whether we'll see international flavour in there too like last year with Frutsy. KBR has the best chance there IMO. After Curleh, I'm not even sure if FChamp can make Top 8 anymore. I can only bet on Chris G and MAYBE Flocker and Wong.

From the cosplay thread. Balrog looks like he inherited some Valle genes

Best international hope for top 8 Marvel are Zak Bennet, Nemo, Tokido and KBR with probably some Mexican/Latino/South American player because they put in work with the game. Maybe White Black if he gets an easy bracket too. If Chou was there he would be a potential top 8 international candidate too.

Killer Kai said it right, getting top 8 is more a matter of the brackets and luck of the draw. Unless you are Christopher Genius.
