Remembering Ryan Davis, 1979 - 2013

Man, been crying off and on all day since I heard the news. Can't say I've ever cried for someone I didn't actually know passing away before, but after 4+ years of almost daily watching/listening to him it really does feel like losing a friend.

RIP, buddy.
 
Just terrible news. GiantBomb is the only gaming site I go to these days, and the bombcast is the only gaming podcast I listen to. It reminds me vaguely of the old GFW podcasts--just a couple of guys hanging out talking about random nonsense half the time. I'm not a particularly sociable person--a bad stutter makes conversation difficult, and as a result I tend not to "hang out" with people that often, but the bombcast was something I looked forward to each week. Although I haven't met any of the cast and never will, they've been a reliable source of entertainment over the years, and while I don't want to single out any one person for the site's or podcast's success, Ryan was clearly a crucial factor in GiantBomb's appeal. He was a great host on the podcast and livestreams, and always seemed friendly and full of energy. It's a tragedy that he's gone, not only for his friends and family who now have one less beacon of light in their lives, but also for the many fans on the Internet who enjoyed his humor and personality.

We'll miss you, Ryan.

Wow, so sad. My condolences go out to his family and wife. Really can't believe that after hearing about him getting married on the Bombcast for the last year that this happens.

Thoughts go out to all of his friends and family, seemed like a nice guy and sure he had tons of friends.

I cannot believe how shocking and sudden this is, I've been a huge fan of the site since 2009 and I just can't believe he's gone. My thoughts and prayers go out to the crew, his family and his wife.
 
I'm sure I can't add anything here that hasn't been said hundreds or thousands of times today already. I shed some tears over this today. I met Ryan only once, at PAX - sought him out to say hi and thank him for the always entertaining bombcast. He didn't know me for shit, yet tuned out the world for a few minutes just to chat with me. I was random fan, and he made me feel like a long lost friend... Now I feel like I've lost a friend.

Damn it, Ryan. Way too soon for you to leave. GB will continue to be full of awesome, games will be played, shit will be talked, fun will be had... But fucking NOBODY will fill the void left by Ryan's passing.

I cannot fathom the loss felt by those that truly knew him. My heart goes out to you.
 
Giant Bomb in many way feels like a site about people who write about videogames rather than a site about videogames. I sort of see the basis of the site being a peek into the friendship of Jeff and Ryan, with Vinny and Brad and whoever else also coming along. Although I'm only peeking in, I get the feeling that Ryan was kind of like a one-of-a-kind lifetime friend most people don't get to have. Perhaps this is all made up in my head, but I'm especially sympathetic for Jeff. More so after reading what Ryan wrote during "Gerstmann-gate". Despite all the shit I've given him, it will be very hard for me to mentally adapt to a giantbomb without Ryan.
 
Oh my goodness... I am in total utter shock. Was literally just listening to his voice as I was catching up on some BombCasts on my drive back home. Never met Ryan personally, but always identified with him and his opinions. He was a master of his craft, and a true pioneer in video game journalism. I will sincerely miss the guy and send my sincerest condolences to his wife, family, and friends. Giant Bomb crew, I can't even imagine how hard this must be for you all. Sending you all peace and calm through this difficult time. Ryan's in a better place and will sorely be missed.

Just heard the awful news, and I'm utterly devastated.

I'd only followed his work since the start of Giant Bomb, but the Bombcast has always been one of the highlights of my week. He's made me laugh so much and so often.

I'm a Giant Bomb subscriber - have been ever since they asked for subscribers - and just a few weeks back I was having problems logging in on the site and couldn't reset my password. I e-mailed the support address and, to my astonishment, it was Ryan Davis (rather than some random intern) that sorted out my utterly trivial tech support issue and e-mailed me back. I sent him a big thank you for both the support help and for all the endless hours of amazing content :)

Goodbye Ryan. We will never forget you, and all the smiles and cheer that you brought into so many lives. Our thoughts are with your wife, your family and all those with the incredible good fortune to be your friends.

We all miss you so much. Rest in peace.

I'm glad to do it. If you asked for an avatar ribbon within the past few pages check back there as you may not have noticed it after a new page or two sprung up. I tried to make sure I got everyone who requested one since I started.

I must have listened to his voice hosting the bombcast and seen him hosting video content for... 500+ hours? Ryan, Jeff, Brad and Vinny became parts of my weekly routine - I set aside 3 hours every Wednesday to go for a long walk and listen to them discussing video games, barbecues, moving arcade cabinets and whatever else is on their minds. TNT starts at 8am local time where I live, so I fall asleep on Thursday with twitch ready on my tablet so I can chill out in bed for a couple of hours the next morning, watching them lose badly in online games. It really sucks to know that a big part of this is gone...

I agree. I wonder who it was that said they should stop it. I made a post just before Jeff tweeted that saying they should do the "Hey Everybody It's Tuesday" opening once more, and wonder if Jeff misinterpreted it as saying they should only do the Bombcast once more.

Nothing stops the Bombcast.

Know exactly what you mean. I've been browsing other threads, playing some games, trying to let it slip my mind. Then I catch it at the top of the list and it hits home again. Still don't want to believe it :(
 
I started listening to the Giantbombcast two years ago when I started grad school. They not only kept me up to date on gaming news during a time when I had little to no time, but they made me genuinely laugh. Especially Ryan Davis. I'm pretty devestated, which is strange to me as I've never met him. I can't believe I'll never hear a "Hey everyone, it's tuuuueessddaayy." again. My thoughts go out to those who were close to him. What a fucking shame.
 
Thought this had to be some dumb joke when I first read it. I'm gonna miss seeing him on the site and at pax.

RIP Ryan.
 
Super bummed.

I was just thinking about this Ryan Davis moment from the first Big Live Live Show a few days ago. I was just cracking up, randomly thinking of it. And now he's gone. I'm sad.

I never met the guy (but I really wanted to, and I'll never get the chance now), but Ryan felt super close. I mean, it was his Arrow Pointing Down podcast that got me to follow Jeff and Ryan to Giant Bomb in the first place.

My thoughts are with his friends and family. Can't imagine how they're feeling right now...

Not to be a buzzkill, but just in case; I'm assuming you know his wife? Or at least her contact information and have her consent for this kind of thing? Not doubting your intentions, but if you're going to be taking money from people, it'd be nice to have some background first.

Me neither.

GTA V has a gameplay video coming out tomorrow and it's like my most anticipated game in years. I was so excited when I saw the thread on here about it.

But then I heard about this and just came crashing back down.

Sort of weird how I first heard about it. I was on the couch watching this Adam Sessler video, and one of the comments on the video said "RIP Ryan Davis!". It seemed like an oddly specific joke to make on a Revision3 video, but I was certain it was just some sort of random bullshit or joke. I went to the Giant Bomb homepage on a whim just to be sure and...yeah.

Still gutted.
