Remembering Ryan Davis, 1979 - 2013

I was at work when I saw the memorial thread, at first I thought it was some sort of joke because he just got married but when I opened the thread I was extremely confused, I didn't know if it was some sort of joke or if I was missing something, then someone pointed out this thread and my jaw just dropped, literally my face was like that for a good couple minutes, I couldn't believe it, I still can't sometimes, even now. I guess I was waiting for someone to come out and say it was a joke or something. I immediately checked the other guys twitter and I guess that's when it really hit me ='(

What a loss and a goddamn shame, such a loss for the gaming industry and I even feel that I've lost someone close to me, he was that cool. I feel so sad for the GB guys, his family, friends but especially Jeff, Brad, Vinny, Patrick, his wife... man he had been married for just a few days! HOW!? WHY!???

Goddammit, I honestly never thought something like this would happen to any of those guys, GB will never be same, I'll miss him on everything those guys put out but they must stay strong and carry on! It's what Ryan would've wanted.

It's a really sad day and when I woke up today I never thought something like this would happen.

RIP Ryan, I'll miss you.

Its already been answered, but she would have known since the beginning, but his family wanted to keep it secret until they were ready to tell everyone.

Posting normal stuff would have been part of that. We have to respect what the family wanted not question it

It was weird when people were asking about it immediatly, now I can understand it. I have a buddy with sleep apnea who uses a cpap mask often. Im wondering if it was that not only cause I worry about him but also cause it'd be nice to know if Ryan just went out peacefully while sleeping.

I will miss his voice and his seemingly endless ability to make me laugh like a schoolgirl.

My thoughts are with the GB crew and his newly wed wife.

Wanted to change my avatar to something happier to put the ribbon on it, which made me think check to see if he ever wrote anything about Crash Bandicoot for some reason. Turns out he's quoted on the Wikipedia page for Crash:

I remember the first time my friend mentioned Giantbomb to me, back in 2010. Up until then, I had been a big fan of the IGN personalities, but they were moving off to other ventures. I was looking for a new site to call home, having been banned from IGN for going off on an alcohol fueled rant.

The very first video I watched was Farming Simulator 2011.

"Oh you know what? We did name our guy PigSticker"

I don't think I had ever laughed harder at videogame stuff before then, I was instantly hooked. Since then, I've listened to every single Bombcast. Tuesday nights were special, often the highlight of some dreary days.

There's a hole in my heart, and I don't know if it can ever be filled.

I completely understand peoples curiosity, but I completely understand that the family may feel it's private. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they never let us know.

It's been confirmed via Giant Bomb itself and many friends on twitter. Seems alot of them knew, like John Vinniocci, but were probably all told to keep it secret until today. You can kinda even look back on many of Ryan's friend's tweets that many weren't even posting anything on the 4th and 5th.
 
Still reeling from the news, my mind keeps jumping to "How...?" but its really not best to dwell on that. Its just going to leave such a hole in the site, and I do hope they go on, but it will just be so strange, I don't want to compare Patrick's move to this, but we are two duders down in less than a month. Just so young and not even married a week? Jesus.
 
Damn, this is horrible, I download and listen to the Giantbombcast every week on and from my way to work, this is definitely a wake up call to myself to start getting healthy, 28 now, not bulletproof anymore. Lord watch over Ryan's family and friends in these tough times, this truly sucks ass, the guy was awesome.

Me too man. An unusually hard time considering I didn't know Ryan personally, it's been a very long, strange, depressing day. But you have to remember that Ryan lived life fully, was happy and brought happiness to everyone he crossed paths with. Celebrate that, but also know it's totally normal to feel the way you are feeling. Just let it happen.

Why would they keep it secret for this long?

I feel super guilty, although I know there's no way I'd have known, but I went to RTX this past weekend and talked to Dave Lang on multiple occasions, as well as interviewed him. I now feel like I was wasting his time talking about dumb bullshit when he should have been mourning his friend. Idk, :/
 
I was just in the car and the radio was playing Ice Ice Baby as part of July being Ice Cream month and all I could think of was that Vine going around from Ryan's wedding.

Fucking a man. It really made me think about how even though videogames are such a big industry, our little hardcore section of it is really close knit and we fucking know everybody. Somebody like Ryan being taken out of the mix really does send a shockwave through our community.

Sorry, I had thought perhaps people were assuming he died on the 3rd because that's when he last tweeted and not because it was explicitly stated.

Give everyone time to to grieve privately. People probably wanted Giantbomb to be the ones to first spread the news.

I hope they never say so that this morbid curiosity isn't satisfied. It's tragic enough as it is, people should give it a rest.

And no, he is gone, so it is not "a problem" anymore. It happened, and that was it and they have a fucking right to be as hush about it as they want. Knowing how doesn't change shit about that.
 
Jesus, I just got home from work and just see this thread. I'm in utter shock, I just sat here with my mouth wide open for a minute. Terrible news. Too young to go, definitely.

My thoughts are with his family and the Giant Bomb crew. I know this news can't be easy for anyone. Stay strong guys. Peace and love.

RIP Ryan Davis.
