Giant Bomb Thread #5 - We love you, Ryan Davis

Jesus fuck... I was thinking on my drive home I was going to playfully tweet him and ask for two episodes of Bombcast this week for my long flight to Europe.

Fucking hell man, just... speechless. RIP

I will never forget the Lantern Run incident when Ryan dropped the other F-bomb. Not for the incident itself, but for the immediacy and sincerity of his apology afterwards. It was a disappointing thing at the time, but I gained much respect for him with how humble he was when he let down the usual Ryan Davis attitude to ask for the community's forgiveness.

Honestly, he handled that pretty well and owned it. Unlike say, a certain other web personality with a comic strip.

I'm still having difficulty processing this. I guess this is that denial thing people are talking about.

I've been very lucky to not have had to go to a funeral for about 15 years at this point, so this is hitting me pretty hard.

Today I'm attending the funeral of a relative who died aged 94, having led a healthy and happy life up until Christmas. But my thoughts will also be with Ryan and the rest of the Giant Bomb crew, it's heartbreaking to lose someone so young with so much ahead of them. Giant Bomb will never be the same without his presence.

You know what is also just dawning on me? They probably have to replace Ryan with someone. That will be such a weird thing for everyone involved.

Summerjams FOREVER

I keep reading that in James Franco's voice from Springbreakers.

Won't happen for awhile I would think. The next few months is going to be weird regardless :/

Last edit, the guy whose been compiling the Summer Jams youtube playlist. Thank you!

That's far off I guess and they won't really replace him. The best thing they can do maybe is rotate hosts on the live-streams to honor him.

And the worst part is, I can't think of a single person qualified for the job. Even beyond the chemistry with the others needed (which could potentially be gained over time), I can't think of a single other person in the games press with the kind of personality that fills a space like Ryan's.

It's what made him such a natural host. It's also part of what makes this such a tough loss. His personality filled little pockets of space all over the world, in a way that few others can, and the void left is affecting so many people right now. Jeff has a bit of that in him, but not at the same level of gregariousness that was a natural part of Ryan.

The games industry (and even Giant Bomb, despite its existence as a personality site) is primarily filled with Introverts and people who encourage space rather than filling it. Ryan was the very rare guy in games media who had that out-sized personality that filled in gaps of everyone around him. While it's part of what probably drove certain people nuts about him, it's not a quality that's easily replaced.

They aren't going to replace Ryan as such. I imagine Jeff will be the host and anyone they hire would just be asked to contribute what they could, not to try to emulate Ryan. His presence is going to be missed, they are just going to have to move on and find a new rhythm because they aren't going to find another Ryan Davis.

Finding the right guy to add to the site will be fairly difficult because Ryan left some big shoes behind.

Man, why do we have to make this about weight again?

JK, I know you didn't mean it that way.

Still, I really don't think that they'll be looking for replacements anytime soon.

Yeah, I know. Doesn't make it suck any less, though.

It was mostly just an excuse to post another awesome thing about Ryan.

I find it more likely for them to redistribute responsabilities and enabling Drew to have more camera time. Dude's already loved by the community and he has been showing up a lot more lately. Even hosted a UPF and ended up on the bombcast.

In the short-term probably. But Drew could be too busy and they might need another person to shoulder some of that load.

Was it a Bennigan's that Ryan said him and Jeff had a photo for every year during some convention? Some not even taken by them?

Drew's busy. It's likely he doesn't do on camera stuff because he's got other things going on.

Like being a sleeper agent.

Well, by redistributing responsabilities I mostly mean Drew and Vinny teaching/letting others take some of the load on video editing and camera work. UPF is clearly a learning process for everyone else to learn how to handle the different camera feeds and all. Once that gets ironed out they can have more liberties. I think they can make it work without getting a new "on camera" guy. Maybe more behind the scenes people.

Yeah, it'll be weird. Jeff, Ryan, brad and vinny were the perfect formula. Will they get another fourth chair or just become a trio?

Pity Patrick is gone too so he can't really fill in.

I thought they had Ian or Andy or some such. Either way, Giant Bomb has gone without interns for too long!

Ian has been working the boards in live shows, but I imagine Drew has been doing a lot of work on video editing and such for other content.

I like Drew on camera though, so he's definitely a solid option to fill in. Rorie too, with Patrick also leaving the local space.

After having time to mull it over, it's kind of ... weird to say this because at first. At first I thought, 'oh man this sucks, but I guess he's just some guy on the internet so I shouldn't be too bothered.'

That's what I first thought. I was still sad, but for some reason, I didn't think of it like a celebrity dying or something where they hold mass funerals and whatnot, where the media tells me I'm supposed to be extra sad. But now that I've thought it over. This death has hit me harder than any other death outside of my best friend's. I've spent 100s of hours listening to this man's voice, be it on television or radio. Sometimes he said things I disagree with, but he's allowed to say that. Everyone's allowed to say that. And he seemed so carefree when he gave his opinion. This really fucking sucks, man. It's weird too, no one should ever want anyone to die young, but the fact that it was a GiantBomb personality is what's so crazy. A website that's personality driven to the point that you get attached to these guys, through their positives and their negatives.

I mean, I probably know more Ryan Davis facts than I do celebrity facts at this point. And I don't think that's 'creepy' at all. It's just a byproduct of listening to a man who opens himself up for your entertainment.

And I have no problem going back listening to old bombcast moments. In fact, it was the first thing I wanted to do when I heard the news, so I would never forget him.

Thanks for the Incredible Crisis's UWEEEEEEE, your love for Pee Wee Herman, for finding out THPS 3's servers on the PS2 still worked, not blocking me on twitter, kreayshawn(not really on that one tho), playing all those terrible motion control games when no one else would, being the horse and meeting the rider, being the hat judge, not putting up with professor oak's bullshit in pokemon snap, and your ska appreciation.

I preferred to post this in the general thread because it's the general thread, and he's such a big part of the site.

Even my wife is sad at this bad news. She's not much of a gamer, but she did watch bits of Giant Bomb when I had it on TV.

It's crazy to think most people here never knew him in person, yet he filled people with so much joy and laughter.

I've been totally out of it the entire day, trying to continue to work while taking in the news. While I've never actually met Ryan, I've listened to his voice for years, telling me the wrong day and date every Wednesday. It has become somewhat comforting, and something I always look forward to every week. I hope that everyone close to him will find solace that Ryan has managed to even touch people all the way on the other side of the world.

RIP.

Feeling a little but better. Starting to envision how they could move forward with the site from this devastating blow.

Rich, time to come home.

Maybe Drew and Vinny like their current jobs the way they are and don't want to go out in front of the camera more than they already have.

We all know both do a tremendous job both in front and behind the camera, just let them decide.

I think they should just have some of the Gamespot crew help out for a time and hire the one the community likes best, everyone's friends with everyone in that big 'ol CBS family anyway. I nominate Chris Watters.

Fantastic

Same with my wife, ha. The Bombcast was the only gaming podcast she would ask me to listen to without headphones so that she could hear also. Was always a bright spot in our weekly routine (now a little less bright) =[
