Giant Bomb Thread #5 - We love you, Ryan Davis

I think the last 24 hours have redefined the word "friend" for a lot of us. It doesn't seem to matter how long you've been visiting Gamespot or Giant Bomb or listening to the Bombcast or whatever, Ryan (along with Jeff, Brad, Vinny and Patrick) felt like a buddy. Someone that most of us never knew personally, but gladly invited into our homes for hours at a time every week. The outpouring of support on Twitter and seemingly every video game site has been astounding. If this is hitting us all this hard, I can't even comprehend what it's like for the people who truly knew him.

WTF.? What an awful system if it's emailing employees telling them he is no longer an employee.

Jeff was likely his direct report, so that's why he's probably being notified (likely with stuff like about how his accounts are being locked down and deleted and that his employee records are being updated with his last day and the like). I don't think it just sends them to random other employees.

:(

Talk about being a cog in the machine. It might be that China don't care but CBSi definitely don't care.

I keep getting back into this thread and I get sad all over again .. I shouldn't read those articles.

Today was kinda special in the office. I listened to the Summer Jams playlist the whole day, not gonna lie great playlist! And surprised I never picked it up earlier.

I also found out one of my co workers was a hidden BC listener .. although not a weekly thing. He was kinda shocked about the news. We ended up talking about great moments from the Podcasts.

Ended my day listening to a random bombcast. After dinner I'll most likely just end up listening to more podcasts. I'm done with feeling sad now. I'll just remember the good times.

Selfishly, one of the things I'll miss with Ryan not being around is his take on AC4. He was the only one who was willing to give that series it's fair shake after AC2.
yea, he was the AC expert. I disagreed with his take on AC: Rev but he played them all so I respected his opinion.

I really hope that I come home from class tonight and see a new Bombcast.

I'm beginning to suspect that there will be one today, despite what I initially thought. Jeff's return to tweeting has me guessing that he's trying to slowly get things back to whatever the new normal is.

I also wouldn't be shocked if they tried to record one, and then decided afterwards whether they should post it or not based on how it went.

Jeff has been playing AC.

I think that's one of the best games to play during a time like this. No violence, fun, relaxing, easy, happy.

I have hit this point as well. There are plenty of old podcasts I still havnt heard yet, and plenty of wonderful videos as well. Ryan wouldn't want us all to be mopeing around.

Dude, when somebody dies you still have to go through the regular process of an employee leaving the company. I'm sure Jeff has to sign off on a bunch of shit regarding account closure and returning hardware, thats probably why hes getting all of those automated emails.

It sucks even more in this situation but you have to do it by the book for auditing purposes.

I remember a few years back I had to close the accounts and collect hardware for a guy in my company at the time who died suddenly. It was the most surreal thing I've experienced in the workplace to be honest. I had to copy all of his emails and files to a shared drive so his boss could access them, then I had to take apart his desk and take all of his equipment to storage. You see a snapshot of what he was doing last, and the emails he'll never reply too... It was so weird, but it has to be done.

RYAN ...

....

I couldn't sleep last night, couldn't eat properly, couldn't run at night without tearing up as sweat..

Damn man.

Damn....

I'm in so much denial at this moment still but...

Damn...

Rest in peace man,

Rest in peace.

I'm at that point as well for the time being, I know there will be a least one or two more times where I'll get choked up (likely the next Bombcast). But the initial shock has at least passed on; the coming weeks and months are going to suck as I try to get used to Giant Bomb without Ryan, but that's going to take a long fucking time :(

There should be some form of a podcast, because Ryan seemed really serious about never missing a tuesday.
Maybe don't do 3 hours about getting lost in Last of Us and moving arcade machines, but they should put something up.

Man, I couldn't sleep at all last night. On the bright side, my lack of sleep inspired myself to do a tribute video for Mr. Davis, so let's see if I can get that done.

I'm not sure its possible to die of natural causes at 34 years of age... im confused

Yes it is:

A death by natural causes, as recorded by coroners and on death certificates and associated documents, is one that is primarily attributed to an illness or an internal malfunction of the body not directly influenced by external forces.

Now people should stop bringing this up for good.

For those wondering...

In a way, comforting. In another way, devastating.

He might have died in his sleep but damnit if he just didn't take care of himself with his sleep those last few days. He was on cloud 9 and just enjoying life.

Having just married the love of his life then having time off alongside the honeymoon really pushed him to his limits.

Reading the wiki on sleep apnea is kinda terrifying, and is making me question if it wasn't also what caused the heart attack that killed my dad...

So yeah... if you snore, don't sleep on your back?

Sleep apnea is no joke. My best friend's dad has it badly. I once had to sleep in the same room as him and he would stop breathing for almost a minute and it scared the hell outta me. Couldn't sleep. :(

I can't breath if i sleep on my back but i don't snore. I think it's because of my sarcoidosis but i won't know unless i go get the sleep apnea test done but i am extremely weird about sleeping in a strange place with things hooked up to me.

I am just glad that he died peacefully from natural causes and that it wasn't a horrible accident or something.

I want to go back and listen to some energy drink critiques. I think the IRN-BRU review was in the first or second episode of the podcast I ever listened to.

Not completely understanding the "Termination emails from CBSi." Is it something like a clinical term for Ryan's passing?

Pretty sure that was the very first yeah. Should have gone into the energy drink reviewing bushiness for real.
