Nintendo of America not allowing SSBM to be streamed at EVO [Up: Decision Reversed]

I wonder if its because unlike the other games Nintendo doesn't currently sell it? Do you think they feel it will somehow negatively impact the Smash 4 because of the differences? Nintendo's has always had its own strange logic it follows.

'streaming? is that something that the kids do nowadays? it sounds dangerous to me. is it drugs? i hope it's not drugs. no, i don't think you should be doing any of this 'streaming'.'

*sigh*

Nintendo disappoints me. They constantly have this lock and key on everything that just makes it so hard to really love them. They care about gamers but they don't care about the community. Where do they do that at?

What in the fucking hell are they DOING?

A decade old beloved game will be streamed for an audience of ten thousands people. A community who freaking loves has fought tooth and nail to get it on that stage raising money for charity in the process and you're going to spit in the face of that. On top of that streaming is becoming ever more important, and both of their competitors seem to be embracing it.

Seriously, fuck you. There is zero justification for this and people should let them know.

Ponder on Smashboards

It's with a very heavy heart that I must report some bad news. I'm sure you're all aware that Nintendo is tightening it's policies around uses of it's IP by 3rd parties. We have just been informed by their legal department that we do not have permission to stream SSBM. We will, of course, honor both the letter and the intent of their request. All broadcasts of SSBM, both official and unofficial, will be forbidden at Evo 2013. Though I understand everyone is disappointed, please do not setup bootleg SSBM streams on your phones. Doing so would put the entire tournament in jeopardy. Anyone at Evo who broadcasts SSBM will be immediately disqualified from the tournament, their passes will be revoked, and you will be asked to leave the premises. You are, of course, free to take whatever pictures or videos you like for your own personal enjoyment at the event.

Since it cannot be broadcast, we will be moving the SSBM finals to Saturday immediately following the Semi Finals (est: 2:00 PM).

You guys worked very hard to get to Evo, and you should be proud of what you've done for your community and the millions of victims of Breast Cancer around the world. Even though there will be no stream, we think Smash is going to be one of the highlights of Evo this year, and we're proud to have you guys be a part of it!

I think this too. Maybe they don't want to be associated with FGC? Not apologizing for their actions, just an observation.

It's probably this, combined with the fact Evo itself is not a non-profit/charity event (outside of the specific donation drive to get Smash in). All it would take is a one second cutaway from the players in-between rounds to someone holding a sign that could be potentially offensive, or hearing one swear word on stream while the game was being played for Nintendo to flip the fuck out. Evo is on a whole other magnitude of any other tourney Smash has been streamed at in many years, so comparing it to Apex or whatnot is probably irrelevant.

It's still retarded as fuck, but at the same time it's not surprising. I'm still interested to know why the first thing the Cannon's didn't do when Smash got the spot was to clear it with Nintendo, unless they did and they changed their minds.

Who needs free advertising for the Smash Bros. series anyway? It's not like a new Smash Bros. game is being released next year and it has an important role in helping a strugglin platform or anything.

They probably think all the sales are going to come from casuals

The Smash community donated around $100k to charity for this opportunity. Nintendo can't even bend their idiotic policies for this?

Get.
The.
Fuck.
Out.

They probably don't know what this is and simply said "no" as they didn't consider the implications of this reply.

I'm all for watching P4A and KOF, but man this just ain't right. And hell, this game won a charity drive to be at Evo. After all of that care and effort from the fans, Nintendo just comes down to say "no" at virtually the last moment? Again, this just ain't right.

I hope the games press gets ahold of this news and reports on it. Its so incredibly idiotic people must realize how stupid Nintendo is.

It maybe has something to do with the 'negative perception' that the 'fgc' has a lot of time and they don't want that kind of association? THANKS KOTAKU.
