Nintendo of America not allowing SSBM to be streamed at EVO [Up: Decision Reversed]

Don't harass Sakurai, he's stressed enough with SSB4 without having to hear complaints about something unrelated.
This isn't unrelated. If there can't be streams of Smash games the next release will be dead in the water as a competitive game.

Isn't this the whole reason the Smash community was pooling their money together? Incredibly dumb on Nintendo's part.

I find it more likely that Nintendo is asking for a percentage that nobody wants to pay.
Do you think they want a cut?

How long before we see a new instructional video for PS4 showing how you can stream your games at the push of a button? xD

"This is how you share your games on PS4"

No but seriously it's amazing how PS4 and the XBone want you to stream your games but Nintendo is completely blocking it.

Jebailey tweeted this, but deleted it about twelve minutes later:

I know it's a dead link, but it was really there, honest.

A new tweet he just posted says "I don't think Going after Nintendo will give us any answers tbh, this is just a saddening situation and hope Smash still succeeds this week."

He didn't need to post that initial tweet, I don't think. This is obviously all Nintendo of America's doing.

Blocking videos of crowds of people getting incredibly excited about playing your game seems like one of the most short-sighted things you can do.

First the adamant refusal to remove region locking, now this. I wonder what will come next.

It's like Nintendo is trying to compete with MS to see who can make the more anti-consumer decisions.

Reggie knows what EVO is. This is not the first time Smash is at EVO. This is just Nintendo being pure assholes right now. If they were going to do this, they should've said something after the donation, now a couple of days before EVO when people have booked their flights, spent their life savings just for this moment, etc. This is the lowest Nintendo has ever gone.
This right here distills it all.

I'm done defending this company... I'm out, fuck it.

i kinda feel this way too. i've disagreed with plenty of their policies before, but this is the first thing to happen that just makes me not like them as a company. they always seemed like a friendly company at least, until now.

I wonder if it's a matter of setting precedent.

Like, if they didn't enforce copyright here, they'd be open to challenges over their Youtube Let's Play claims.

Is it really that amazing?

Nintendo have this tendency to either do the opposite of what the others are doing or just not pay attention to anyone's business but their own. We almost should have expected this.

This is the stupidest thing Nintendo has ever done. How is it humanly possible to defend this?
This isn't the stupidest thing Nintendo has ever done.

Apparenty a video game not being streamed at some tournament is worse than the virtual boy, the Wii U name and Friend codes.

Yeah, exactly. If they're getting rather finicky about a 12-year-old game, I have to wonder how they're going to treat Smash 4 in competitive circles and streamed tournaments in the future.

It's just rather disappointing from both Nintendo's PR standpoint, and also a competitor's standpoint (ie: perfecting your skills at a game so you can compete on a level where people get to learn who you are, and also get to learn from what you do in the competitive scene so they can probably use it in their playthroughs).

Nintendo has to be one of the most bipolar companies in the gaming industry. "Yeah we love our fans, thanks for supporting our games!" and then "You want to stream one of our most beloved games at a tournament after raising money for cancer? Fuck off"

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
RegionFree campaign a bust, that brief period of Nintendo/Youtube shenanigans, and now this are all hopefully wake up calls as to just how little a shit this corporation currently gives about its most faithful and hardcore.

Hopefully result in a whole lot less affectionate "Ninty" usage about town.

The decision is 100% Nintendo's fault but how do you not ask NoA about this as soon as Smash won the contest? Skullgirls or any other game with a more competent developer should have been getting the free hype.

Hey Nintendo, why not...you know...get free awareness of one of your big franchises?

Why do you do EVERYTHING wrong?

I think Nintendo would VERY MUCH like Smash to not be seen as a hardcore or competitive game.

This right here distills it all.

Yup. At this point it's super shitty, but given that (apparently?) MLG had to pull Smash for the same reason, and Nintendo has been ruling with an iron fist in general about online videos for their games, I really really want to know why the Evo crew didn't clear this with Nintendo 5 months ago.

I don't understand why everyone is so mad. I mean, cockblocking streaming rights for a game sounds like a wonderful idea when you're trying to drum up hype for its latest sequel!

You wouldn't want hundreds or potentially thousands of people to have their attention caught by one of your most popular series, would you? Nintendo is a business people, I think they know what they're doing.

I think that's a big part of it... I'm not as young as I used to be and I'm at the point I've accepted they are a company that doesn't care about me. Which sucks but reality has to hit some time I suppose.

How come evo got informed so late about this issue, evo is in 2 days right? Is nintendo doing this out of spite or something leaving it so late? or was it sloppy organisation all around?

The virtual boy was ahead of its time
The Wii U name is just carrying on the successful Wii brand
Friendcodes were err..... functional

I was only going to watch the finals so I don't care that much, but man that's pretty shitty of Nintendo.

Oh well, SF4 and Marvel is what I'm most excited about.

Just like #NintendoRegionFree, right?

EVO didn't region lock their streams. Fans will be so confused if they see the NTSC version being played as the things they are viewing may not be appropriate for PAL regions.

Anyway I just sent a PM to Maxilmillian in case he hadn't heard. Hope he does a video on this. He has amassed a good number of subscribers and is one of the more level-headed fighting game ambassadors.

Legitimately fucking upset and Jackie_Chan_mindblown.jpg over this shit. My God, how can a global company exist in 2013 that DOESN'T understand its global market to this extent. What the actual fuck
I told you, Azure. I fucking told you

This is just the right time to do it in Nintendo's mind. People are so flabbergasted and busy that they can't possibly mount a defense. Nintendo likes to go for the heart the first chance they get.

People have been saying since forever that Nintendo are a company that lives inside their own bubble when it comes to business decisions and developing games (such as using their own tools), and I believe it even more and more by the day when they do stupid shit like this.
