Remembering Ryan Davis, 1979 - 2013

Pachter was speaking from the heart there, him choking up really hurt to watch, coming from a dude who's usually Mr. Tough Guy. Geoff was just...

I don't know if that's his style or if he's just a zombie or something.

Then they're like "Who else can we get on here? How about the girl?"

"But I didn't really know the g...."

"Doesn't matter!! Throw her in there!"

and what was with them just cutting off Bosman who I believe is a newbie in the industry (am I wrong?) but trying to speak from the heart, and he got like two words in.

"It's such a loss for the industry. The industry. The industry." What about the man? That's what matters here.

I think its because those guys were on the set for this week's Bonus round when they heard the news.

You do what you can. Chobot's words do ring to some truth. gaming journalism crew has always seem like a 'neverland' frat party. People really are growing up... huh.

I actually see this as renewing his vigor. Jeff's been... cynical for quite some time about gaming. Maybe this will remind him to be less cynical about things.

Yeah, hopefully. Hearing him talk on the Bombcast about he and Ryan kind of discussing doing some stuff that didn't involve video games pretty much confirmed my feeling that he hasn't really seemed to give a fuck about video games that much for a while now.

I didn't catch that part, did they say it at the beginning while I was raising the volume?

Yeah, I mean, it's been awhile since she licked that PSP, so she's been around forever. What's she up to now?

I dunno, the whole thing just kind of seemed....off, minus Pachter. He made me sad I never had the pleasure of meeting Ryan.

Yeah. Hearing him talk on the Bombcast about he and Ryan kind of discussing doing some stuff that didn't involve video games pretty much confirmed my feeling that he hasn't really seemed to give a fuck about video games that much for a while now.

I heard this too. I was never a frequent GBcast listener but my friends have always been "Oh you gotta listen!" and I'm expecting gaming talk and they're talking about like, fruit salads and stuff and it threw me off so I go back to people and they're like "Yeah, well, they really don't talk about games much anymore...." so I know the feeling. Something always brings me back into games eventually though and I'm sure memories of growing up doing this with your best bud is gonna do that in Jeff's case.

They made a video and they're saying kind things. Just take it as it is. What's the point in being critical about people expressing support regardless of whether they know the man personally?

I understand that we're fans of Ryan, but that doesn't mean we should be cynical about people who aren't huge fans that are still expressing support. Can't we just take their kindness and be happy with it?

I don't know if that's his style or if he's just a zombie or something.

Wow, that's not cool at all man. I felt like Geoff was genuine as well, and a bit emotional at the beginning.

Shame on anyone criticizing how people should be reacting at this.

Yep. And pachter did mention they were filming a Bonus Round on twitter.

Probably a spur of the moment thing.

Surprised people though Geoff wasn't feeling anything. definitely looked like a guy where his emotions and his media training is duking it out on his face.

I'm not ripping into them as people, it just kind of felt off to me outside of the Pach. Like, I went to IGN for example to see what they wrote, if anything, about this and found the story:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/07/08/fare-thee-well-giant-bombs-ryan-davis

THAT I'm feeling. This GT thing just kind of made me uncomfortable. Sorry. I know death is tough. I mean, I barely followed Ryan Davis and hearing this news hit me hard, so maybe that's why I was surprised it came off as it did. Maybe it was the editing?

I don't think it's video games he's sick of, just the typical video games journalism stuff. Giant Bomb already moved the direction away from a review/preview focus and more towards media entertainment, and I think he would like to take that further.

Pachter's words were crushing, man :( I'm sure Ryan knew how much people valued him.

Other two didn't need to be there really, but whatever.

Because of the events of this week, I have totally lost interest in gaming. For example I've been waiting ages for some gameplay footage of the new GTA and when it finally arrived, as good as it looked, I was not enthusiastic at all. I found myself thinking about how Ryan and the GB crew would have reacted to it on their next bombcast or whatever

It really does feel like a death in the family, haven't felt like this way since my grandmother passed away 7 years ago. It just highlights how tight knit the Giant Bomb community is and the bonds they formed with their listeners/viewers

I don't want to derail things too much but I guess, looking to Giant Bomb's future, they've gotta choose whether to go Led Zeppelin or The Who (see the links if you don't understand the references), I guess. They'll either decide to soldier on or not.

As an entity, GB is owned by CBSi so they might not have a choice as to whether to actually shut the place down or not but they'll obviously choose to either go on or not. Hopefully, they'll be given the time to figure things out. From the sounds of it, they've got that latitude which is nice.

I can't imagine losing a best friend and having to keep working on a project that was so intimately associated with that friend. It must be so tough. My heart really goes out to all of them.

He's really gone.
Seriously.
I'm still baffled.

I know man, it still feels surreal. I was watching some old quicklooks earlier, I was finding it really hard to process that the voice of Ryan I was hearing laughing and saying dumb things was the voice of someone that wasn't with us anymore. :(

Yeah, I really wanted to dive into the Civ V expansion and maybe install the Firefall beta but instead have just played Shadow Warrior Redux because my attention span can only accomidate something dumb and simple like that.

My Last of Us multiplayer fun came to an end for a little while, I can tell you that much.

Played some Animal Crossing though. Pleasant. Nothing going on in that game but... that's about all that's required.

Give me a break.

Pachter made me cry...

They were in the middle of filming and took time out to do a tribute video. They said that at the start. Stop complaining, it's a nice gesture.

It wouldn't surprise me if they decided to go on an extended hiatus. They probably need to regroup and decide how to proceed from here as Ryan was such an integral cog in the machine. Of course there are other logistics to consider such as paying members

It would be so tough to have to rock into those offices every day and be constantly reminded of his presence. Its ok for us, we can just watch other videos if we please but they have to live with it. I also wouldnt be surprised if another GB staff member left, finding it too hard to work in that environment anymore. Completely understandable if they did

Damn Michael you really pulled your heart from talking about Ryan. Much respect for talking about your experiences with him and the rest of the giant bomb crew. Made me cry a bit....Damnit.

We really have lost one of the greatest personalities in this industry and will be missed greatly.

Still can't believe he is gone...Starting to bring up memories of my dad passing in 2010. Better log off for a while :(

CBS Interactive FINALLY posted a tribute to Ryan on their backend site:

It is with a heavy heart that we say farewell to our colleague, Ryan Davis, senior editor and co-founder of Giant Bomb, who passed away last week.

Davis was a significant voice in the gaming community, followed by many, quoted by everyone, and revered by all.

Importantly, Davis was a prominent figure within the CBSi Games community for many years. He was an instrumental voice on the GameSpot team from 2000 to 2008 and co-hosted several popular video series for the site, including "Time Trotters" and "On the Spot."

In 2008, Ryan and GameSpot alum Jeff Gerstmann founded the gaming site Giant Bomb. The site skyrocketed in gamer popularity and was named one of the top 50 web sites of 2011 by Time Magazine. Ryan was later reunited with his colleagues at GameSpot when CBS Interactive purchased the site in 2012.

At Giant Bomb, Ryan's presence could be felt in a host of different video series and projects, notably the prominent "This Aint No Game," in which Ryan reviews films based on video game franchises and the site's podcast "Giant Bombcast."

The outpouring on other gaming sites and within the social sphere has been wonderful to see, with many quoting Giant Bomb's characterization of Ryan as an "outrageously, uproariously happy, looking forward to his next adventure with the biggest grin his face could hold."

Games GM David Rice said the team is focused on Ryan's family at this time and will reveal plans shortly to pay tribute to Ryan's life.

The Giant Bomb team has posted briefly about Ryan's passing here, with future content celebrating his life to be created soon. Please keep his family and the Games team in your thoughts.

Possible, but it seems more likely that this will bring them even closer to together, and carrying on as normally as possible will be somewhat therapeutic.

Nothing against Keith Moon, but AC/DC would be the better comparison.

Everything that Ryan did was gold; I always knew that I was going to have a good time whenever Ryan was speaking, and now he is gone. Just gone.

Ryan, we love you. I hope that you know that.

<3 Pachter

Always have. And Geoff was definitely emotional, I could tell his usual cadence was different and you could see it in his eyes. Made my eyes get watery again and now I have a lump in my throat...

Yeah Geoff does care for sure, everyone saying otherwise is just being blind or ignorant, sorry to say that. Chobot was honest and I respect that. Kyle got cut off which was totally weird and I wonder why.

Edit: Made by Mushir from GB forums.

My Ryan story happened a long time ago, when they first got started with Giant Bomb and their web site at the time was super simple so it got me interested as to how and what they used to make it. So i decided to send them an email and a few days later Ryan emailed me back telling me exactly how and what they used to create their site.

Just a little thing that he could have easily not done and it wouldn't have changed much, but he did and it was really cool of him. It just goes to show you what type of guy he was. He would go out of his way to help someone he didn't even know just because that's who he was.

I had a hard time listening to the podcast, especially the end. Was getting all chocked up. You never think that doing little things or just being genuine will affect anyone else, but it does....in a big way.

You will be missed.
