Pacific Rim |OT| Apocalypse Never

Saw a pre-screening myself, and thought it was fantastic. I read the original screenplay, and was disappointed they didn't incorporate some of the battles, like the magma monster and the spider thing. Plot is very thin, surprisingly so, and it just might turn off the casual movie goer...

And I'm not sure if it was mentioned before, but since they shot this in state-of-the-art Red cameras, the resolution is obscene, and in my showing they projected on the ENTIRE IMAX screen. This the first full-length film I've seen like this, never cutting back to the 2.35 aspect ratio like TDKR.

To my delight I had to wander corner to corner just to digest the scale of the film. Really awesome.

Hello there, OP here. I've been on holiday for a few days, hence why I haven't been replying to your PMs. I'm back now and have a question:

Other than Kanye and EviLore, what impressions would you like added to the OP?

EatChildren's recent one is a good one.

Kojima/Nagai/Sadamoto/Ueda if you want some Japanese perspective.

The acting is generic, but never offensive. In fact, Elba, Day and Gorman, and Martini stand-out in a good way. Hunnam and Kazinsky just didn't get a chance, and the former gives gruff line readings often without reason.

So watching Pacific Rim inspired Kojima to pick up the Ultraman boxset:

When say the acting to they mean generic and un-noteworthy or cringe worthy? Because one of those I can look past if the actions good.

Nothing is cringeworthy, really. Even the "canceling the apocalypse" line was actually good in the movie as opposed to the trailers.

Called my IMAX to ask about the posters and they said they were for the 7pm showing, but now Fandango's checkout isn't working for me. Ugh.

I've...never seen any godzilla movies besides the stupid 98 one. Nor have I ever watched Ultraman :\.

Never saw any monster fighter movies, but I don't like mech animes really.

I'm going to see this cause I am actually a power ranger fan and most likely I'll always be one.

Got 2D tickets for Saturday. First big popcorn film of the summer for me...geez, it'll actually be the first summer popcorn movie since the Avengers for me! Don't let me down, movie.

''Fandango reports that Pacific Rim accounts for 60% of Fandango's advance sales for the upcoming weekend, and it is currently outpacing World War Z at the same point in the release cycle.''

It looks like it's not going to bomb after all.

Haha, yes! Nothing's for sure yet and it could very well still do poorly in the long run, but I don't think it would hurt to start baking up a batch of crow for the naysayers, with a special helping for Variety of course :)

My theater better have posters for the 10 pm show, I bought tickets for this last week and they just added a 7pm. I don't want to have to go all kaiju on their asses.

Encouraging. Let's see it beat Grown Ups 2 before we celebrate.

If this does well, then WB's marketing teams deserves MAJOR props for hauling ass these last couple weeks.

Just get back from watching the movie (it's released on 11th July in my country). All I can say is this movie is satisfying, I walked out of the cinema feeling like a little boy that's just watched his first robot movie.
Before the movie is released I don't care if it's going to bomb, but after watching it I kind of hoping that this movie will hit the box office, because if it's bombed that means no sequel, and I don't want that to happen.

To Rotten Tomatoes, I say:

Yeah, yeah - "Speed Racer sucks," etc. etc. Point is, a movie which isn't universally praised can still mean a great deal to any given individual, and a more unique, challenging film can review much more poorly than something which plays it incredibly safe. This is hopefully something most people will keep in mind when reading reviews (but won't).

Rotten Tomatoes is at 72%.

Thankfully, I think it's unlikely that the film will fall under 70%.

All I can say is: Please let this don't bomb. Even if I don't like it, we need more movies like this one.

I certainly hope not. This movie needs the Certified Fresh rating!

Over 80 would be preferable, but I'll settle for over 75 considering the current state of its score.

I agree. I love Speed Racer.

RottenTomatoes is the worst piece of shit in today's movie world

Like, you can't talk to somebody about movies or trailers without him or her holding RT scores in your face - as if these numbers from people that they and myself don't even know matter

Some
Good news!!!

According to @Fandango, PACIFIC RIM is selling more advanced tickets than WORLD WAR Z. Could it beat Z's $66M opening?

Could it be opening more than 66 million ???!!!!

What? Why the fuck does it matter? If you enjoy the movie, you enjoy the movie.

I know a large number of people who use RT as a basis for picking which movies to watch. For example, even if they were hyped for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, since it only got like 59%, they skipped it and still haven't seen it.

Positive reviews create good buzz which then in turn create good box office figures. This movie needs every bit of positive buzz it can get.

I think I am going to see this on Saturday. None of my friends want to go....I need new friends.

Gonna check this out as a matinee. Old many style, on my own.
