"Assault rifle" is a slippery term that mainly refers to how a gun looks. (At least the way it's used these days.)

The AR-15 looks pretty much identical to the rifles currently used by the military, can accept large magazine, but only fires one round every time the trigger is pulled.

The repercussions and moral messages from this case are just so unbelievably bad it's unreal. It's going to shape the law going forward, and it's going to be ugly. People are now free to arm themselves and follow around random teenagers just because they think they look "suspicious" and then if those kids retaliate, and they end up losing the upper hand, they're justified in shooting and killing them. UNREAL. I would not want to be a parent living in Florida. Scrub that, I wouldn't want to ever live in Florida, or most of the US full stop.

I'm guessing by your English you live in a country based on English common law. Whatever highly evolved paradise you live in, you have the doctrine of self-defense too.

I don't think Stand your ground is a bad idea, but it certainly needs to be fixed in Florida. Someone who goes looking for trouble should not be able to claim Stand Your Ground.

Manslaughter is what's called a "lesser included offense." If someone is charged with second-degree murder, the prosecution can also submit the question of manslaughter to the jury as an alternative.

Also, I'd like to clarify some of the terms used concerning criminal cases. You didn't make this mistake, but some people are lamenting that Zimmerman wasn't "charged" with second-degree murder or manslaughter. Zimmerman was charged--that's what initiated the criminal prosecution--but he wasn't convicted. Just a heads up to some commenters in this thread.

Lancaster a small town near the SC-NC border. And you can see where I'm coming from. For a lot of people this isn't just an excuse to get outraged and throw a tantrum over some bullshit. For a lot of us it's real life that we could be in this situation.

I grew up in Beaufort, about an hour away from Savannah. My sister still lives there. The south is just a different beast entirely. My experience has shown me that a lot Black people in the south are born into shit situations, and they either join the military and get the hell out of the situation or do their best to keep their head in the books all together or they perpetuate a fucking stigmata that they have a reputation to uphold which leads to shit situations/decisions.
