Box Office: ‘Despicable Me,’ ‘Grown Ups’ Sequels Stunt ‘Pacific Rim’ Stateside. Warner-Legendary pic does better o'seas with $53 mil, while 'Grown Ups 2' grosses $42.5 mil domestically

Another weekend, another big-budget box office disappointment. This time it’s Warner Bros.-Legendary Pictures’ $185 million-budgeted “Pacific Rim,” which collected just $38.3 million domestically. But the film saw better results overseas, earning $53 million from 38 territories.

As “Pacific Rim” floundered domestically, the battle for No. 1 came down to a pair of sequels: Universal’s toon holdover, “Despicable Me 2,” estimated $44.8 million in its second frame, down 46%, while “Grown Ups 2” earned $42.5 million. So far Stateside, “Despicable Me 2″ has grossed an outstanding $229 million, with $472.4 million worldwide.

Globally, it was a close race for top ranking this weekend between “Despicable Me 2,” which collected $100.3 million worldwide, and “Pacific Rim’s” $91.3 million global weekend tally.

Even though “Pac Rim” tanked Stateside, the overall box office was up more than 20% over the same frame last year, continuing the summer’s push toward being a record-setting season.

There were few surprises this weekend, as the top three films landed in line with pre-weekend tracking estimates — though a last-minute barrage of advanced ticket sales for “Pacific Rim” had the media buzzing about a potential overperformance. Still, the fanboy-driven film was front loaded by Imax, which contributed 19% of the pic’s domestic opening with just 331 locations.

Audience reaction to “Pacific Rim” was mostly positive, with best responses from men. However, according to CinemaScore, women also rated the film an ‘A-’.

Meanwhile, “Grown Ups 2″ showcased the reliability of the franchise, as well as star Adam Sandler, since the film has been skewered critically. Pic scored just 7% on RottenTomatoes. But more than half of the film’s debut came from auds under 25, a demo less prone to reading reviews than adults.

The Weinstein Co.’s limited release of Sundance pick-up “Fruitvale Station” scored the weekend’s highest per-theater average, with nearly $54,000 per location. The film bowed at seven theaters in New York, L.A. and San Francisco, where it totaled an estimated $377,285.

The movie was a total disappointment, and the commercials were laughably bad.

Should've played up the strong female co-lead (instead of "2000 TONS OF PURE AWESOME, HEY WASSUP FANBOYZ!" angle), or better yet, used this budget for a serious effort at a live-action Eva. It's all I could think about while watching this film :-p

I guess Pacific Rim is going to have to ride on the international markets. Domestic isn't going to put in much work.
Hoping it will recoup budget. Not sure though.

More info can never hurt.

For an original sci-fi project that has no marquee names $38m is pretty good.

For a event film that cost between $180-200m however $38m it is pretty bad.

The most important weekend for PR was never it's opening three days but it's second. If WOM can spread and people start to check it out it's possible the film could have legs and eek out a solid box office gross.

If not then the film has (unfortunately) tanked. Either way this means that PR is a 'one and done' with no sequels and limited prospects for the Pacific Rim IP's future as a whole.

Now the real question is what does WB do with Godzilla? Though they only financed 25% of the film will they keep it in the plum May 2014 slot or move it seeing as PR hasn't been very well received?

Man Of Steel

Total Lifetime Grosses
Domestic: $280,995,000 47.1%
+ Foreign: $315,600,000 52.9%
= Worldwide: $596,595,000

Bring on the sequel.

It's still a victory that PR even got made.

I still think it'll at least break even when you add in worldwide and it'll probably do well on home video too.

hopefully the good word for pacific rim will allow it to have some legs...
With its RT, IMDB and cinemascore its multiplier will be max 3.5 i think which will have it end up domestically at 135 mill. 70 mill behind of its production budget, when you calculate in its estimated marketing budget of around 70-100 mill it will be short by 140-170 mill. Unfortunately PRIM also bombed in UK and Australia so the only hope is Asian market where the biggest market is China and that accounts for a small share globally. The only way this will even break even at this point is it having more bluray sales than iron man 3 when it comes out

From the last thread:

PACIFIC RIM breakdown: IMAX 19% w/ $7.3M, 50% 3D (tops this summer), Males 61%, 25+ 53%, CinemaScore A-

Pacific Rim's gender breakdown was closer than I expected it to be.

Let's be honest here, it's not like Grown Ups 2 was stealing the Pacific Rim crowd away. It's different groups of people.

Let's be really honest here, it's not like there is a Pacific Rim crowd.

Here in Germany it's also gonna be an utter bomb. Nobody knows it exists.

Anyway, can't wait to see it.

Well at least I can say that I supported Pacific rim, but glad that grown up 2 is not number 1, this means another shitty sequel with Kevin James.

I wonder how much the rest of the world likes Adam Sandler "comedies".

Glad that Pacific Rim bombed. Next time you make a great Mech based movie, make sure you think about the other things that envelopes it is not total rubbish.
Has Sandler ever made a good movie?
Yeah, but that is long time ago. Surprised he gets the pull he gets to this day.

World War Z did pretty good for itself despite all the negativity surrounding it. Zombies and Brad Pitt still got it.

Pacific Rim did on the upper echelon of what I thought it might, but I was hoping it might break out to 45+ mill~. We won't be getting a sequel. Maybe a cartoon show or something is the best people can hope for. :P

Good for Kevin Hart, making a ton of money on his movie. I can't remember what I read he put up for it but it was something like 2 million of his own cash to make it and he will pull in at least 30 million from it.

And shame on every single idiot who went to see grown ups 2 instead of pacific rim. I hope you all get trapped in a housefire.

I feel I need to take a trip to the US and slap every single person who watched Grown Ups 2. I know I'm sorely tempted to stand outside the cinema here in the UK and slap everyone who dares to watch that abomination.
