Fighting Games Weekly | July 15-21 | Post-EVO Pillow Talk

This article is so perfect.
Patricia Hernandez, please stop.
In a sea of Akumas and fireballs during this year's EVO, any change-up in character selection was welcome. Even so, you don't expect one of the "worst" characters on the Street Fighter roster to suddenly make an appearance in a top 8 match.

So much wrong in this. So much wrong.

That's like saying Xian winning evo with Gen is a "bold move" wtf.
I'm rewatching the TVC EVO grand finals and god damn that game is ugly as sin.

Street Fighter EX status.
Custom soundtrack homebrew, though.

Here is my attempt at understand the breaker system in KI. Someone can correct me if I am wrong.

So the flow chart for this whole thing looks like:

Get comboed
Combo -> Combo Breaker -> Some life regained by defender and combo stopped. Offender gets put into hard knockdown state.

Combo -> Mistimed combo breaker or wrong guess on input -> Defender gets put into a state where the offender can go full ham mode on them until the defender comes out of the state. This is why you can't go for combo break unless you know for sure.

Combo -> Combo break -> Counter break. Offender reads the combo break and cancels it it, offender continues combo with higher damage.

Combo -> No combo break -> Counter break fail. Offender gets put into a punishable state which the defender can take advantage of.

"Street Fighter Player Wins Great Match at EVO With Unpopular Character"

Is this a real headline?

"I am told Infiltration has a "pocket Hakan," so he knew what he was doing—but still, given how unpopular the character is, I wouldn't blame anyone for wondering if he did. It still strikes me as a bold move"

This article is so perfect.

Hahaha she gets paid to write this? O.o

Here is something I would like to do:

With Ono saying that he likes to hear feedback, I would like for us to go through the entire Marvel roster and rebalance it as a forum. I would like to have some concrete form to this, and not just everyone throwing ideas around that we kind of like but kind of don't like. Here is my proposal:

There are 50 characters in the game. While I'd love to give each character 1 week, that means we won't finish for a year. I think that, ideally, we should finish this in the next 2-3 months. So, either we could do a character every 3 days, which I do not think is advisable, or we could do 3 characters every week. That means we will take 17 weeks, which is 4 months and 1 week. I know that a third of a year is a long time, but if we do more than 3 characters a week, I think it will be sloppy. I'm open to suggestions, of course.

We will form a committee of X number of people. While anyone can participate in the discussions, this committee of X number of people are the final deciders of what changes get made. These people should be active in every week's discussions. Changes are only solidified when the committee unanimously supports them in whole. Every week, the committee will need to come to a conclusion on Sunday. Sunday evening, the next set of characters will be posted, and discussion will start on Monday. Ideally, no one makes suggestions Sunday, and we use part of our evening to reflect on the character so that our posts are more informed.

The committee members will need to fill different roles:
1) Record keeper - has all of our decisions in one document (Google Docs?) for easy perusal.

2) Roster decider - the person who decides who we look at next (IMO, it should be a mix of a highly used character, a moderately used character, and a rarely used character every week to keep things interesting).

3) Announcer - someone to post in the FGW thread about what we are discussing in here each week.

IDK, maybe some other roles (suggest stuff).

If people are interested, tell me. If someone has a suggestion, make it. If this is something people want to do, let's do it. Since it's my idea, I'll decide upon the committee members. My only goals with forming the committee are that:
1) The committee is not too big (I'm thinking 3-7).
2) The members are all frequent posters in this OT.
3) The members are all relatively well-informed about the game, and understand a wide variety of characters.

I think those are all fair requirements. Posted this in the FGW just in case we miss any regulars who happen to not check the Marvel OT thread today. Our first week will be ironing out system changes, since character changes don't make any sense without that context.

This isn't KI then, the game is all about long ass combos as a reward for mixing you inputs up so your opponent couldn't guess what combo you were doing. Basically they break it by pressing the same button you do.

It's rock paper scissors with long ass combos. That's always been KI
It might not have been clear, but I was referring to Marvel there, not KI. Of course KI needs combo breakers - that's the game's defining feature.

No troll, but is olied up Hakan really Top 1 free in AE currently? I'm genuinely curious.

It spreads. lol

Well thanks! :p
(Also, come to the anime thread!)

I moonlight in there every four seasons. Should really try and be more regular but the way you guys move makes Marvel look slow. :lol
Can I be a commitee member?
Obviously, post in the OT.

Nothing is stopping this fucking train.
Can I be a commitee member?
I would do it, but I don't play enough these days to be considered :P

I was about to post that I couldn't believe that the booing thread was still open (for quite a number of reasons), but I see it was just closed. Most of that thread was more embarrassing than anything then the actual booing.

Also I really need to try to get a cheap stick ASAP; using a fightpad which I'm okay with (I'm a weirdo and claw the pad since I piano keys) but I just cannot seem to pull off specific series of inputs in AE using the thing. Was going through Ryu's trials, and I cannot do the Shoruyken -> FADC -> Metsu Hadoken one to save my life. I know I used to be able to do it okay with a stick, but on a pad I just can't seem to get my thumb to do the backdash then ultra motion out quick enough :/.

Her and other so-called "journalists" are why I'm a journalism major so I can put an end to bullshit like that.

actually it was revealed that kotaku has a pool of articles that each writer can pick at random to post.

I think they just have a certain quota to fill and they help each other out.

bless kotaku's heart for trying to clean their image with the FGC, but i would advise them that Patricia is not exactly a well received writer given her posting history.

Hella ugly.

Plays nice outside of megacrash tho.

I didn't know you were at EVO too.

Contrary to that dumb article, Hakan is a popular character. People like using him when they are playing casuals and such. Everybody gets hyped when a good Hakan is on stream. Of course he has a lot of problems so he's not really tourney worthy but he's far from unpopular as that article suggests.

Don't pursue a journalism degree wtf. Get an English degree or something. Something you can use for other things if the journalism thing doesn't work out.

If I remember right, a study just recently came out that put Journalism near or at the bottom of a list of jobs/professions worth pursuing in America.

Here it is. Career Cast's study puts "News Reporter" dead last on a list of 200 desirable jobs.

Journalism degree is a REAL tough row to hoe right about now.
That's because, in the current state of journalism, anyone can be a "journalist".

1) Receive a press release.
2) Copy-change the information.
3) Publish!

It's really sad. In games journalism, make it:
1) Read a GAF thread.

English is among the least desirable majors as well. It's always at the top of "don't let your kids major in this" articles next to Anthropology (my wife's major) and Philosphy (my major!).
